For #WordWeavers tomorrow, I think I'm going to be working on a new #cyberpunk story. The MC is an original character that I've been writing for a very long time and in so many different stories. I used to RP him with friends, and still avidly do in a number of fantastic stories, but I decided to finally start a long novel with him. He originated from #CyberpunkRED and #Cyberpunk2020, tabletop RPG's / #TTRPG's. I've written him over every imaginable medium.
I’ve been reading way too many recently published #CallOfCthulhu scenarios that feature a perfunctory investigation before the Investigators board a train to creepy town that is a one way exercise in hit point and SAN attrition. Sure, some of the imagery is very creepy, but something is definitely missing, that being real problem solving and meaningful choices.
Well, this made me happy. I was purchasing supplements for the #FATE#TTRPG called the FATE Space Toolkit.
As I read it, I found it very scientifically accurate. Further, as I read it I found a couple of bits that seemed familiar.
All was explained when I came to the bibliography. Among the erudite sources was a reference to my Atomic Rockets website. This brought a smile to my face. The purpose of my site is to help authors, I'm always glad when it does.

Wouldn't it be sweet if every #TTRPG setting and character and system could be used with every setting and character and system in an enormous #RPG#multiverse?
So many systems already have multiverse settings (#GURPS, arguably #BRP, even #DnD if they still have that planar thing going on).
Groups could team up for one-offs in the shared intersection of their usual settings.
The two things that I personally feel have always been terrible about the design of #DnD are the class-based character development system and the Vancian magic system.
These systems irrationally limit the choices players can make in designing and developing their PCs, and TSR/WotC/Hasbro has missed so many opportunities to do away with these systems over the past 50 years.
But, they can be fixed, within the existing framework of #Dnd5E. (more)
It’s up to us to keep our hobby strong. Buy physical RPG books and PDFs direct from independent publishers. Don’t become reliant on online digital tools. Use paper character sheets. Let players use options from non-WOTC 5e books. Play other RPGs.
What else can we do strengthen our hobby from the whims of any single company?
I am working on ridding myself of the part of my mind that has been so poisoned by "hustle-culture" and all that nonsense that leads to me being ashamed of those creative or artistic endeavors that do not end up earning any money (or have no potential for it).
Stopped me from writing for years. Kept me from indulging in story telling and even reading.
Dear #fediverse what are your strategies for dealing with such a horrid mindset?
does anyone else remember that time in the 2000s when Wizards put quite a lot of old #dnd stuff on their website for free? mostly some stuff that didn't sell that well, but there were a few pearls on there. Like the Maztica boxed set, or the orange cover Palace of the Silver Princess, or Secret of Bone Hill.
I am not sure if I should point it out like that, but these things are still downloadable via wayback machine...
Here's a #worldbuilding thing I have been thinking about for my #ttrpg#osr campaign: there is a single church that trains clerics. They are a polytheist church though, and their priests are trained to deal with all kinds of different cult roles a community might need. Which is why all clerics have the same spells.
They accept the existence of all kinds of gods, even though some are banned from worship (e.g. Orcus).
Now what would be a good name for such an... let's say "all-embracing" church?
It's interesting, at least to me, to read the contrasting attitudes towards crowdfunding in the #BoardGames space (trends negative) versus the #TTRPG space (trends positive).
There’s some really interesting changes coming for 2e! Bards have full martial proficiency, clerics can f finally get heavy armor from within their class, wizard schools of magic are gone… Then of course the big named news, like the replacement of dragons with the magic traditions (arcane/nature/religion/occult), and the...
Oooof. Woke up to a message that another player has had to drop from one of my D&D campaigns.
Now feeling absolutely clobbered by imposter syndrome and doubt. Worried it's me, and instead of creating a table where people feel welcome to come and have fun... I'm chasing people away.
Maybe I have a weird hobby, but oh well. As a GM, it's important to me that my players have something nice to look at, so I bought myself a Tenfold Set for some beautiful #Cyberpunk aesthetics :cyberpunk:
My last memory lane posts seem to have resonated well so here’s another. #CallOfCthulhu is up there as one of the games that I’m not very keen on. This comes from a couple of games (both at conventions with well respected Keepers) where the aim has been to scare the player rather than the characters. This put me off for quite a while but after a good game with someone who was running Cthulhu as their first ever GMing attempt I’m tempted to go back to it. #GamesWorkshop#RPG#TTRPG
