A nerd nostalgia thread of possible #RetroComputing interest:
From 1993-1994, I was a “technical assistant” in the RF Engineering department of #Comcast#Cellular. Back then, Comcast was a scrappy regional cable #TV operator making its first foray into #mobile telephony, not the multinational #telecommunications and media behemoth we know today. (1/6)
#FCC reinstates #NetNeutrality policy after #Trump era cancellation. By following the law Congress wrote for modern internet-access service, FCC is reestablishing its federal oversight of the #telecommunications service that connects everyone.
#Broadband providers will need to stop playing favorites or #throttling links to websites they has no commercial deals with. Measure now likely to be challenged in court by corporate #telecom & cable communications giants.
🤔 Bell CEO, other execs called to committee to testify over recent job cuts
CE Inc., the parent company of Bell Media, announced last week it is cutting its workforce by 4,800 positions, ending multiple television newscasts and selling off 45 of its 103 radio stations.
I was met with disbelief when I said the reason why BELL laid off all those employees was a "revenge move"...
Please reed this article and tell me I was wrong.
⚠️ Bell denied stay in decision allowing smaller companies to sell internet using its fibre network
🚨 "...could be further cost reductions if the company feels it has to stay ahead of regulatory decisions it finds unfavourable."
I had occasion to talk about this in class the other day, and its one of those stories I frequently forget the details of.
The extent to which the #telecommunications landscape re-congealed to nearly pre-1982 #ATT breakup levels by the early 2000s is a pretty compelling argument for the need for ongoing #antitrust enforcement.
Fiber optic cable is going to be laid in front of my house. Two workmen are operating a soil suction device in preparation for laying underground optical fiber cable. A high pressure water jet loosens the soil, which is aspirated via a large suction tube. The water is reclaimed for reuse by a cyclonic separator on the truck, and the soil is captured in a holding tank. Genius. #fiber#telecommunications

Telecommunications is essential national infrastructure.
Alienating if from the Public Good might not technically be treason, but it betrayed the nation. Time to de-privatise what should never have been privatised.
Both of the lawsuits have been authorized by the #SuperiorCourtOfQuebec to proceed as class actions, meaning a huge number of Videotron customers could be awarded damages. None of the allegations have yet been tested in court, and Videotron has formally denied some of the allegations.
"KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has issued a licence to Starlink, the satellite communications service started by Elon Musk, to provide internet services in the country, particularly in remote areas, its communications minister said on Thursday (Jul 20)."
「 most network operators began their 5G rollouts by deploying non-standalone 5G networks. In these instances, the 5G network is built on top of the existing 4G network’s core infrastructure. While non-standalone 5G isn’t expected to perform as well as the alternative—standalone 5G—it is much cheaper and easier to deploy because it doesn’t have to be built out from scratch 」
