So, warning for #bookstodon folks: looks like #StoryGraph are introducing "AI"-generated content.
I'm emailing them to ask for clarification about whether user data is being used to train this "AI", to express my concerns about the accuracy/quality of LLM summaries, and to express my concerns about the likelihood that unpaid-for work has been used without the knowledge of the creators in order to train it.
Update: I replied to this toot with the full text of StoryGraph's response.
Un o’r “heriau” dw i’n wneud ar #StoryGraph, slo bach ac ara deg. Y syniad yw bo chi’n darllen un llyfr o bob talaith yn UDA, ond mae diffiniad rhai pobl o beth sy’n cyfri braidd yn chwit-chwat: dw i newydd weld hunangofiant Elton John fel “llyfr Georgia” (gan fod e wedi recordio yn Muscle Shoals?) ac mae “Beloved” Toni Morrison yn ymddangos dan sawl talaith. Dw i bach mwy llym fy nehongliad o “llyfr talaith X”. https://app.thestorygraph.com/reading_challenges/36b14e8c-94d7-4ca2-95da-988e2aca1813
Ok, #bookstodon, what do you use to catalog or index your personal library of #books? I did it ~13 years ago but didn’t maintain it. There have been a lot of changes since then. Have to move the bookcases, so it’s a good time to do it!
Didn’t like the old app I used. I’d like to scan the isbn or bar code and have it auto populate a list with basic metadata, in an open format (csv?) I can export & edit.
@cbdawson another vote for #LibraryThing I've had an account for ages, but started using it properly only recently.
As others mentioned it does barcode scans and you can import from Calibre and other tools. I use it to track what I own, and #StoryGraph for what I read.
Given the current brouhaha over #GoodReads, and that it seems generally a good idea to disconnect from #Amazon where convenient, what do people like as alternatives?
I have a #LibraryThing account, but it seems they haven’t really evolved much in the decade since I used them. Still has a very mid-2000s feel.
I've started using the recommendation feature on #StoryGraph, and so far it's given me cool, offbeat suggestions. I'm currently reading Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison, a werewolf novel which seems to be using lycanthrophy as a metaphor for the physical and emotional changes during pregnancy, and I am here.for.it.
I finished Sanora Babbs' "Whose Names Are Unknown" and it's wild how much overlap there is with The Grapes of Wrath. The grandparents that don't make it to California. The stillbirth. The depiction of the work camps in CA. She and Steinbeck were literally working in some of the same camps so even if he hadn't been given a copy of her notes I guess it wouldn't be that surprising. It's been a while since I read Grapes, but I think the feeling of the #books is pretty different.
Tis demax.
🌟 I'm a #behavioranalysis clinical director, living that #momlife when I'm not at work. I'm a little bit #neurospicy and married to the most painfully neurotypical man I could manage to find.
