Wooh! Got to take a tour of the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer as part of #AGU23. It was fascinating, they could have filled 2x as long, barely skimmed the surface. I got to see some AUVs, a rover, the bridge, and more. Lots of emphasis on open science & open data 💙. 🧪 ⚒️

It is absolutely astounding to me that we are still earnestly entertaining the possibility that and more broadly have a role in scientific writing, manuscript review, experimental design, etc.

The training data for the question below are massive. It's a very easy question if you're trained on the entire internet.

Question: What teams have never made it to the World Series?

Correct answer: Seattle Mariners.

Now, four responses from GPT4.

NB: The Nationals won it all in 2019.

Which teams have never played in the world series?As of my last update in January 2022, the following MLB teams had never appeared in the World Series: 1. Seattle Mariners: The Mariners have been in the league since 1977 and, despite having several competitive seasons and star players like Ken Griffey Jr. and Ichiro Suzuki, they have not made it to the World Series. 2. San Diego Padres: While the Padres have actually appeared in the World Series twice (in 1984 and 1998), they haven't won a championship. 3. Texas Rangers: The Rangers, who originated as the Washington Senators before moving to Texas in 1972, have been to the World Series twice (in 2010 and 2011) but have not won. 4. Milwaukee Brewers: The Brewers have made one World Series appearance in 1982 but did not win. 5. Tampa Bay Rays: The Rays, who began play in 1998, have appeared in the World Series twice (in 2008 and 2020) but haven't won the title. 6. Colorado Rockies: The Rockies, who began play in 1993, made it to the World Series in 2007 but were defeated by the Boston Red Sox. Now, it's important to note that the list of teams that have never won a World Series is longer and includes some teams like the Padres, Rangers, Brewers, Rays, and Rockies, as mentioned, among others. However, this information is as of January 2022. The list could change based on subsequent seasons. You might want to check more recent sources to see if any of these teams have made or won the World Series in the past two seasons.
Which teams have never played in the world series? As of my last training data in January 2022, the following MLB teams have never played in the World Series: 1. Seattle Mariners - Founded in 1977, they have yet to make an appearance in the World Series. 2. Colorado Rockies - Although they've been to the playoffs multiple times since their inception in 1993, the Rockies have made it to the World Series once in 2007 but were swept by the Boston Red Sox, so they have played in the World Series. It's worth checking the most recent MLB seasons (2022 and 2023) to see if either of these teams have since made it to the World Series.
Which teams have never played in the world series? As of September 2021, three Major League Baseball (MLB) teams have never played in the World Series: 1. Seattle Mariners: The team was established in 1977 and is based in Seattle, Washington. Despite having some successful seasons and making multiple playoff appearances, the Mariners have never advanced to the World Series. 2. Washington Nationals: While the Nationals franchise itself has played in and won the World Series (in 2019), the team was formerly known as the Montreal Expos and was based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The Expos, established in 1969, never played in the World Series before relocating to Washington, D.C., and becoming the Nationals in 2005. 3. Colorado Rockies: Established in 1993 and based in Denver, Colorado, the Rockies have made several playoff appearances and reached the World Series once, in 2007, but did not win. It’s worth noting that teams' fortunes can change rapidly in sports, and new teams may have joined the league or existing teams may have reached the World Series since my last training data in September 2021. Was this response better or worse? d9 Better CP Worse = Same X

@ct_bergstrom I periodically play around with it randomly to see what kinds of responses it gives for various prompts. This week I had it generate some blurbs for a trans event I’m doing. I intentionally used the full word “transgender” to avoid misinterpretation.

The responses talked about “transcendence” and never mentioned “transgender”, altho some used the word “inclusive”. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Opinions? I am looking for #newsletter platform recommendations! What do you use, what do you like (or dislike!). Mailchimp, constant contact, buttondown, … ?

Need:

<500 subscribers

~weekly emails

Ease of use is key, don’t need to be tech savvy

Embed multimedia

Low/no budget

Accessibility built in

Responsive design, without creator needing to know much (or anything) about that

cbdawson,
@cbdawson@mastodon.social avatar

@kkarhan Thanks, I know what RSS is and used to manually build and maintain RSS feeds. However, I am specifically looking for newsletter platforms, not newsletter alternatives.

For a broad non-tech audience, RSS is not a reasonable alternative to an email newsletter today, most people don’t currently use RSS readers.

cbdawson,
@cbdawson@mastodon.social avatar

@kkarhan You do you.

I subscribe to newsletters that I value, that serve a specific communications purpose and mode. I write newsletters that users tell me they value and that meet a need.

I just want to point out that I asked for recommendations on a specific technology platform … and your response is basically to pick arguments with me about my communications medium in general, which I did not ask for input on.

Trying to follow this story about Canada's Trudeau accusing the Indian government of assassinating a Sikh leader on its soil, and I'm really feeling the demise of old Twitter. Over on "X" half of the quote-tweets are mysteriously unavailable, it really looks like Musk is helping or allowing the government to suppress discussion. On Bluesky I can only find white people talking about it--the Indian voices are super few and far between. And here on Mastodon, search turns up nothing?

cbdawson,
@cbdawson@mastodon.social avatar

@blaft I wonder if it’s more an issue of mastodon search being so very bad, combined with whether the discussions are happening on instances that your instance is aware of — otherwise they wouldn’t get captured in search?

Just happened to read this article about meta censoring these discussions. If a government is trying to get meta to take stuff down, they probably went to 🐦, too? https://pressprogress.ca/

Ok folks. I’m starting to research whether to consider an for and local errands.

Any advice for someone just starting to investigate, things you wish you’d known, key considerations & trade offs, etc. ? Also appreciate any tips on bikes that are good for very short folks. (And please, don’t try to tell me all bikes work for all sizes … )

Hey, locals! (Yes, you, #SFBayArea!) I need suggestions and I know you have opinions! Brainstorming possible locations for a mid-day (one-time) women of color in geophysics coffee & chat. Can be a coffee spot, or BYO.

Logistics:

  • Close to Moscone (~5-10 min walk max)
  • ~10-15 folks
  • Early December, so potential rain
  • Basic accessibility
  • 30min (hour max)
  • Easy to find & get into for non-locals

I’m thinking maybe coffee shop or even a parklet or indoor public space.

Thanks!!

@alexhammy Thank you so much! Yerba Buena is on my list to check out, and I’ll take a look at Sightless! I’m just never downtown in the last few years, and trying to think creatively.

cbdawson,
@cbdawson@mastodon.social avatar

@alexhammy @geographile Ok, now I want to hold a meeting on a carousel. I also had peeked at the ice rink 😆 But yeah, I think it has to be indoors, since we need to plan ahead and we don’t want to conduct real-time saturation experiments 🤣 I’m surprised how many of those public but privately owned spaces are actually indoors, and they are swank.

I don't know who I'm posting this for, but you may find it interesting. I've been adding subtitles to @interpeer_talks videos (not all finished yet), and here are some notes.

First off, I've been using https://github.com/m1guelpf/auto-subtitle which is using whisper.

Whisper has an annoying API in that it'll extract speech from all the video before returning it, which means if your process fails at any time before completion, you won't get partial text. Who designs an API like that in this century?

sigh

cbdawson,

If I were going to write a cultural history of monogamy, I think I would argue that humans have a history of religions and philosophies that idealize monogamy. But the majority of humans themselves have never been monogamous in practice.

cbdawson,
@cbdawson@mastodon.social avatar

@annaleen I'd read that book, if written with a queer lens. I've always thought the push for monogamy in the last few hundred years has primarily been about women as property: it makes them more valuable for producing offspring for labor & heirs.

Growing up Irish-American Roman Catholic, my mom told me that any perception that I was sexually active would mean no man would want to marry me. Later when I came out as queer, it was a sin and l was going to hell. So, damaged property vs immorality.

Ok, #bookstodon, what do you use to catalog or index your personal library of #books? I did it ~13 years ago but didn’t maintain it. There have been a lot of changes since then. Have to move the bookcases, so it’s a good time to do it!

Didn’t like the old app I used. I’d like to scan the isbn or bar code and have it auto populate a list with basic metadata, in an open format (csv?) I can export & edit.

~600-800 items. Mostly published since 1950.

I think we need to start talking about the dangers of electric car fires. They are harder to put down and as easy to start as gasoline.

@divya Not cars, but berkeley has been on some sort of campaign lately about lithium battery fire hazards of e-skateboards, e-scooters, and e-bikes. It’s been in multiple city newsletters lately, reporting they are the “cause of at least six recent fires in Berkeley when left charging unattended.” https://berkeleyca.gov/community-recreation/news/reduce-lithium-ion-battery-fire-risk-e-skateboards-e-scooters-and-e-bikes

@abolisyonista @academicchatter You can check how they cite their own work, or ask them.

My $.02; Use current name. I consider colleagues knowingly using my old name when discussing my old work to be intentionally disrespectful.

If you’re citing an article or book with a persistent ID (e.g., DOI, ISBN, etc), then author name is less important. If not, I’d still use their current name. A compromise might be to include old last name in (), but definitely NOT first name.

cbdawson,
@cbdawson@mastodon.social avatar

@abolisyonista @academicchatter And just to be clear, at least in my profession, I can’t think of any situations where that “compromise” would be necessary. That would be a rare situation where the rest of the citation is non-unique, and I can’t think of any scenario like that that I’ve seen in the last 30 years. And publishers that try to force that are just intentionally harassing people, and you should push back.

If you're looking for an alternative kind of a place to stay in #Lübeck, you could do a lot worse than the queer feminist collective hostel on Clemensstraße called #Schicksaal

Woke up in a room that looks like a treehouse with environmental activist art on the walls this morning. Looking forward to a good #vegan breakfast now.

Don’t tick the “next day delivery” box without really needing it. Urgent delivery means that delivery vehicles go out only partly full and travel further to get to delivery sites that are more spaced out. It basically chops off a large part of the energy, human and cost efficiency of mass parcel delivery, but it’s ooooh, soo seductive. Please don’t fall for it (it’s a marketing ploy), unless the sky is going to fall in if you don’t get widget A by tomorrow.

cbdawson,
@cbdawson@mastodon.social avatar

@helenczerski I wonder if this varies by shipper and location? For amz it now doesn’t seem to matter how far off the delivery date is, it still ships to me the same amount of time ahead of the delivery date. I changed my shipping preferences for awhile (thinking environmental impact & safety), but stuff was mostly still getting shipped next day or maybe, sometimes, two days. I wonder if it’s because I’m in a major metropolitan area, so most orders are filled hyper locally.
