If #RishiSunak is considering a progressive ban on the purchase of #cigarettes & thereby moving towards making #smoking illegal, one can only presume that his chums lobbying for the #tobacco industry now feel that their employers (#BigTobacco) have a handle on alternative income streams - #vaping perhaps?
But, one thing is for sure Rushi would not have floated such a proposal without first checking with his advisors (who in turn would have checked with the lobbyists & those they represent!)
Research published in Lancet Oncology concludes that in the poorest areas, the risk of dying from #cancer is more than 70% higher than in the wealthiest areas.
The key to the difference is lifestyle changes, with giving up #smoking is a key shift; but of course, especially in poorer areas services to aid giving up #cigarettes has been hit by funding cuts.
Equally, getting fit also isn't cheap; from #bicycles to #gyms, if you have no money fitness aids are out of reach
A new study by Cancer Research UK suggests since 2020 a decades long reduction in the numbers #smoking by around 5% a year has halted.
Worryingly this halt has been most evident in deprived & poor regions/localities, while smoking among the 18-24 age group has actually begun to go up.
One of #RishiSunak 's few bipartisan polices, his aim to make the UK 'smoke free' by 2030, may therefore end up be more costly (in social support for giving up) than envisaged.
Like a stopped clock, #RishiSunak is right very so often, and on his plans for the progressive banning of #smoking, I think he is right.... but as I've said before, I assume he ran the idea past his chums in #BigTobacco first & they confirmed they think their future is in #vaping!
Smoke free Sweden: Why are Swedes stubbing out their cigarettes?
Sweden is on course to become one of the world's first "smoke-free" countries, defined as less than 5% of the adult population smoking.
It is set to achieve this significant milestone in the coming months - 17 years ahead of the EU's 2040 target, with smoking rates falling from 15% to 5.6% over the past 15 years.
“The volume was stitched together from pieces [Barrie] had written anonymously for the St James’s Gazette, Edinburgh Evening Dispatch, and elsewhere… The only throughline to it all is how the chapters mirror the instincts of a smoker’s mind: although it may stray to other subjects, the prose always returns at steady intervals to the preoccupations of nicotine.”
'The new coalition government led by prime minister Christopher Luxon confirmed the repeal will happen on Tuesday, delivering on one of the actions of his coalition’s ambitious 100-day plan.
The government repeal will be put before parliament as a matter of urgency, enabling it to scrap the law without seeking public comment, in line with previously announced plans.' #nzpol#nzlaw#smoking#tobacco#healthlaw
Rishi Sunak says he is "disappointed" his bill banning young people from ever being able to smoke legally will not pass before the general election. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-69058303
The Tobacco and Vapes Bill is not included in the legislation being rushed through by MPs ahead of Parliament shutting down on Friday.
Selling tobacco to anyone born after 1 January 2009 would have become illegal.
But Mr Sunak said the bill was "evidence of the bold action that I'm prepared to take".
"That's the type of prime minister I am. That's the type of leadership that I bring.
"I stepped up to do something that is bold, that will make an enormous difference in the future of our country."
Labour's shadow health secretary Wes Streeting said: "If Rishi Sunak's idea of bold leadership is to crumble before his party and surrender his landmark smoking bill, it's no wonder the country is in such a mess." #smoking#vaping#UKlaw#UKpol

Generate a photorealistic image of two adult women, one of Caucasian descent and the other of South Asian descent, both engaged in the action of sharing a joint. They both are dressed in casual clothing, having a relaxed vibe around them. Embellish the image with a psychedelically enhanced colourful mosaic background giving it a surreal, dream-like atmosphere. Please make sure the interpretation doesn't endorse or promote drug usage, but rather capture a cultural aspect of the era.
In this 1671 painting from Hubert van Ravesteijn we see an exclusively designed paper packet leaning against a clay pipe, ready for consumption in a tavern.
In order to sell small units of tobacco, paper was needed: used papers and freshly printed papers. Zoom in:
Bientôt un an que j'ai arrêté de fumer; Mon portefeuille, mes poumons, mon chiens et la plupart de mes amis s'en portent mieux.
Moi, je suis plutôt fier de moi.

Any places to avoid as a non-smoker who enjoys outdoor venues?
Went to Space Room Lounge for a comedy show done on the patio, and at least half the people out there were smoking. Wife and I decided not to stay,
