Instead of having a #SilentSunday - how about making some music? I fool around on the piano and I've been in a number of all-percussion bands. Do you have an instrument of choice?

Art is here - https://peggy-collins.pixels.com/featured/lets-play-peggy-collins.html

OK. :: sets down suitcase :: Looks like I've moved over here from mastodon.social.

Seem to have lost my follows, but I think I can rebuild that.

So how about a little introduction post? I'm a woman in her '60s, living in Southeastern Pennsylvania. I have a partner, a 10-year old son, two Schipperkes, and five hens.

Interests:

The question I ask myself a lot these days is, how do we survive the next century cooperatively? I'm alarmed by the risk of authoritarianism here in the US.

#Introduction

I'm a Grumpy Optimist.

Optimist because, although the world is messed up, there are good people with good solutions to many of the problems.

Grumpy because there are so many roadblocks to implementing those solutions. Things go backwards, even when there's a clear path ahead.

I like #mathematics, #rationality, and #creativity. I play the #saxophone (rather badly, but it brings me a lot of pleasure). I like to think I have an eye for a good #photograph.

Oh, and #FBPE, #GTTO.

friends - I'm looking for the score for Marilyn Shrude's Sonata and Renewing the Myth. I have her Shadows and Dawning.

Most particularly, I'm seeking out her Sonata: La Follia nuova.

Any help is welcome!

Born Today: Albert Ayler
Instrument: #Saxophone, tenor
Born: July 13, 1936
Died: November 25, 1970

His music was moving into the free #jazz genre but with his own unique style. He was not able to find work though in the US and moved to Sweden in 1962 where he made his first recordings. Later that year he recorded four albums with Don Cherry. In December he joined the Cecil Taylor group in Stockholm after seeing them play at a local venue.

There's a insouciance to this that I enjoy. I think it comes from the casual, improvisational scribbliness, the brassy colour, and a hint of DNA.

I have a Selmer VI Bari sax from the 50s (78xxx series). Nothing else I have played sounds as good. However, ever since I got it in 1988, the middle A has been unstable. I just spent a boatload of money doing a light overhaul, but that damn A would still randomly overblow. Yesterday, I finally noticed that the socket where you put the neck was slightly warped and not truly round. Repairman fixed that today. Played great at the shop. Hope this was the problem!

Album Review: Pharoah Sanders: Pharoah (Box Set)

With the passing of Pharoah Sanders in September 2022, almost a year ago at the time of writing, and bearing in mind advances in sound-restoration technology, we can anticipate a stream of previously unissued Sanders recordings being released in the years ahead. If this outstanding 2-CD / 2-LP box set is anything to go by, bring it on. #jazz #saxophone
