Does anyone else just feel really, really good just being here? I am brand new and I ain’t going anywhere. Even with less content, or minor interface/web inconveniences (all of which are being addressed and that’s a pleasure to watch too) it feels like a community. Good vibes all around.
Moderating communities isn't really something that interests me, but if you love the #fediverse and want to see it do well, a great strategy would be to look at this list of subreddits that plan to go dark indefinitely and make sure there's an equivalent on your favourite #lemmy or #kbin instance.
I'm sure the users of those subs will be looking to get a fix.
Not for nothing, but @minnieo is doing some AMAZING digital organizing for the #RedditBlackout and the #RedditMigration and anyone who cares about either, or the Fediverse writ large, should follow and learn from her.
Tech Press don’t understand the #Fediverse, so how can they understand its growth?
To hear them talk, most of them believe that #Mastodon and the Fediverse are one and the the same. Some of them go so far as to call the Fediverse the “Mastodon network”.
Which means that they don’t have a clue about what the Fediverse entails, nor how it has grown.
Case in point: between Jan-May 2023, #Misskey and its forks grew by 300,000 accounts. No one in the Tech Press reported this.
Okay, perhaps they didn’t know because the bulk of growth happened in Japan. But still, this is fairly important to know since Misskey is now responsible for generating the bulk of Fediverse content. Even so, Tech Press think the Fediverse is about Mastodon.
And now, #Lemmy and #Kbin are experiencing lots of growth, with both collectively gaining 100,000 users in a week. This is quite a noteworthy event since the #RedditMigration is part and parcel of dissension on #Reddit – a pretty major Big Social platform.
Does the Tech Media report on this? Nope. But again, that’s because they don’t understand the Fediverse nor what it entails.
Then Meta signal that a new project they’re making, #P92 (a.k.a., #Barcelona), will be joining the Fediverse. There’s even screenshots that show this app interacting with remote Fediverse servers.
But instead of reporting about how this will affect the existing Fediverse, press such as the #BBC say this is an altogether different social network than Mastodon.
That’s right! Tech Press don’t even realize P92 will be joining the Fediverse – a social network that already exists!
Is this all ridiculous? Yes.
But this is why we have to be forthright about what the Fediverse is, what it entails, and why it all matters.
As an effect of the recent Reddit blackout, the company is now surrounded by disappointed investors and community. I predict that Reddit may end up facing the same fate as Tumblr: being sold to another company. Only time will tell what the future holds for Reddit, but one thing is for sure - the protest will leave a lasting...
UPDATE: Federation seems to be a bit broken, only sign up if you are interested in testing with other instances in the fediverse.
Just set up my #kbin server and got everything working (I guess!).
That's why I am looking for curious people who would like to register on such an empty server, some tests were okay but I don't know about the #federation at the moment, seems to work somehow, not sure yet 😉
One of my friends is a mod of a very large subreddit that went private for the blackout. Last night she received a message saying that she had been stripped of her moderator rights and the subreddit was taken public again. To be very clear, the subreddit members had specifically voted in favor of going private.
It seems like reddit will stoop lower and lower to try and break the blackout. I'm seething.
#redditmigration Never liked #reddit and don't have an account I can close or subreddit to make private, but I don't mind using a free (as in freedom) platform to publish extended notes related to #emacs and usage in academia ... will see how it goes I guess ... using ommnia as my handler since oatmeal is taken 🙄
What I don't get is how to follow and mention from mastodon to kbin... doesn't look like I can follow @ommnia from here, for example.
Until now, group actors had not gone mainstream. Most people on the Fediverse didn’t even know it was possible. Now suddenly, people realize that microblogging isn’t the only purpose for #ActivityPub.
I like the hashtag #fedup to describe the more recent trend of people fleeing traditional, centralized, corporate, user-hostile, money grubbing, (…I could go on) services. It works on a few levels, 1. Being fed up with those services and 2. The fediverse being on the up and up!
The ease in which I quit Twitter didn’t surprise me, but how I just up and peaced out from Reddit is wild. I never was a big Twitter user (mostly lurking/consuming) but I used Reddit All. The. Time. I think having faith in the #Fediverse after using Mastodon has helped ease the emotional transition.
So, I am a Reddit refugee that wants to check out the Fediverse. And I am so happy to see you all.
Every platform is failing.
The corporations won and are now dying.
The open internet is closing.
Information and history is being erased.
The Fediverse is our only hope......

@atomicpoet It will be very interesting to see the synergistic effect of these two social media migrations coalescing in the #Fediverse. Suspect it will be much greater than simply the sum of both.
