Tbh, this has been on my mind for the past two days, so I hope you guys don't mind if I unload it here. I tend to obsess and I figure if no one cares, then at least I can get it out of my head instead of thinking about it all the time. Also sorry for the length, I promise I have a doctor's note....
"We're all participating in a huge shift, and it won't be the familiar, convenient, linear path we've all become accustomed to. And | love everybody's optimism and willingness to pitch in to build a better web for future generations."
I’d quite like a #lemmy and #kbin app that focuses more on the lurking/consumption side and embraces the Fediverse nature. It should let you browse and follow magazines/communities without an account, and let you participate in threads with any Fediverse accounts, notably Mastodon.
I run a few groups, like @fediversenews, mostly on Friendica. It's okay, but Friendica resembles Facebook Groups more than Reddit. I also like the moderation options that Lemmy has....
Anyway yeah I’m liking Lemmy and the fediverse so far. I actually prefer the UI/UX of kbin.social more for desktop, but Jerboa is great for mobile. If they stay actively in development it’s going to be hard to beat IMO
I’ve followed from Fark to StumbleUpon to Digg to Reddit, and now many years later, to Lemmy. I think the communities being spread across instances is extremely powerful for overall global community resiliency (if the separation is respected and we don’t end up with a bunch of duplicated “subs” everywhere).
I’m sure you’ve heard plenty of people say this today, but the one thing I feel the most is excitement. The chaos reminds me of the early-ish days (~1996?) of the web when everything was discoverable and not already aggregated to be served up to you inbetween advertisements.
I agree with you, Ada. For a long time, I've said that the focus on Mastodon (and consequently microblogging) has been myopic. And I've urged developers to explore more of the Fediverse. It's exciting that a different use case has opened peoples' eyes to further Fediverse possibilities. Maybe the #RedditMigration will cause people to re-think what is possible.
This might seem like a drop in the bucket compared to #Lemmy. However, Kbin is an extremely young project. I believe kbin.social, the largest Kbin server, only came online two months ago. When I joined, it only had a handful of accounts.
I have no doubt that Kbin usage will jump further.
Right now, it’s the 7th most used server software on the Fediverse. It’s on pace towards overtaking Pleroma and Microdotblog. And we don’t know how much Lemmy growth will happen during the next two days.
"Lemmy is all about the groups, whereas KBin also has more of the micro-blogging type functions. You can do a post that doesn’t go to any groups and just goes on your “microblog”, and you can view other user’s microblogs."
"Kbin calls it’s groups “Magazines” for some reason and Lemmy calls them 'Communities'."
Move account between different instances of /kbin?
In Mastodon, it is very simple to migrate from one instance to another. You retain your followers, those you follow, and your messages.
It is something essential in a community that is growing so rapidly and can overwhelm any instance with limited resources.
In /kbin, we are experiencing the same thing these days with the #Redditmigration. There aren't many instances yet, but we could help a lot if it were easier to migrate to another instance with less traffic than .social.
Via @xuxxun: Lemmy server Beehaw adds new Disability and Accessibility community.
"Hello everyone! This is the first post in the newly made Disability and accesibility community. Feel free to post anything health, chronic illness, disability or accesibility related. If you need a space for support or sharing your experiences regarding all of the above topics, this is the right place as well"
This week, #SpaceHost is onboarding its first customer. That customer will be running a #Lemmy server.
It’s apparent that the #RedditMigration needs servers. We’re one of the first Fediverse managed hosts to support Lemmy. And we’re currently testing #kbin, so that’s coming soon.
As you all know, #SpaceHost isn’t ready for public access yet. But we might make an exception soon for people seeking to create #Lemmy and #kbin servers.
Because I have no impulse control, I have created a #folklore and #mythology magazine on #kbin .
(For those who came in late, kbin is one of the #Fediverse#Reddit alternatives. If the site seems slow, this is because it gets hammered with new users due to the #RedditMigration .)
I think the online folklore community has suffered because there was no decent online forum catering to this interest (and I've have looked a long time for them). The closest were the assorted Hashtag Day events on #Twitter , and Twitter... has its own problems, as we all know.
In fall of Nov 2022, when Twitter melted down, many created Mastodon accounts, tried it and were quickly disillusioned because of performance issues and the absence of the level of engagement they were used to. So they went back to Twitter.
Performance issues were quickly addressed. But engagement and critical mass are a more challenging chicken and egg matter. You can not expect the #Fediverse to instantly provide this, you need to stay and help us build it.
New migrants please be patient. This is a lot like Nov 2022. It will be choppy, but get sorted out. This is another golden opportunity to break down corporate social media.

@dandan The original poster used the tag #redditmigration, which the @redditmigration magazine has as one of the tags to automatically pull into the magazine. All mastodon posts should be pulled into kbin as a whole, and then they get sorted into various magazines (or the "random" magazine if they aren't). afaik this is based on the hashtags but there may be some other way it's sorted as well.

OC Some ramblings about the future

Redditors, how do you like Lemmy?

Hello you four-eyed fuck!
OUT! having said that, welcome to all....
Welcome to the Federated /m/TheGoldenGator!
This is an experimental backup mirror for the subreddit:...
Magazine dedicated to discussions about the kbin itself. Provide feedback, ask questions, suggest improvements, and engage in conversations related to the platform organization, policies, features, and community dynamics. (kbin.social)
