Why tech wealth is really important
"To curb e market power of & ensure tt benefit everyone, must invest in developing . The concept of an open-standards tech stack - consisting of digital , system & platform - has gained traction .. From the climate impact alone, I wouldn’t touch Bitcoin with a bargepole .

“Bitcoin alone is estimated to consume 127 terawatt-hours (TWh) a year — more than many countries, including Norway. In the United States, cryptocurrency activity is estimated to emit from 25 to 50 million tons of CO2 each year, on par with the annual emissions from diesel fuel used by US railroads.”

kkarhan,

@jd :bitcoin: is also a that doesn't add any value and it's only purpose is to commit and as well as by rich like ...

Today, 15 years ago the person or group with the fictive name of “Satoshi Nakamoto” created the first cryptocurrency named Bitcoin with the thought of it becoming a secure and fast alternative to fiat currency.

Now it's known as the most wasteful use of electricity, inefficient and limiting capability/functionality, as well as being among the most insecure and de-anonymizing ways to transfer money.

However, what Satoshi Nakamoto probably hasn't expected is how many scam-currencies would come after theirs, and how their invention would create a new breed of the most annoying people known to our species: crypto-bros.

Not that it matters tho, since (unlike ) is gaining momentum in acceptance by being vastly more stable in terms of it's value as well as no meaningful rise in transaction costs or wait times.
After all, it's designed to be a system not a .
That isn't toxic generalization, but .

"So let’s talk about .

I’ve been getting email from them and my apartment complex. Flex is a new options where they take your and divide it over two to four payments. But of course flex has it own .

So essentially Flex pays your rent with a fee and you pay flex back. Sounds good right.

But I did some digging because they are pushing this so hard.

Come to find out, Flex is horrible. It doesn’t tell you how much the fee is until you sign up. Once you sign up it’s damm near impossible to get out of it.

So let’s say you need to split September rent, but in October you are fine. You still have to go thru flex and pay the fee.

Then I found this article. Not only could the lady not get out of flex, she ended up owing them about 1k in fees.

That also states that Flex as a has 1 out of 5 stars on BBB. Their customer service is damm never nonexistent.

But I think we are missing a bigger issue. are pushing flex because they know people can not afford the rent. And because people can’t afford the rent there are more and loss of payment. So instead of lowering the rent they push flex. They want it to seem like they are helping when they are not.

Most people get evicted and the apartment never get their money. 7 years later it falls off your credit report.

So to keep people in these buildings and to keep a steady income they offer some shit like flex.

It’s and will most likely leave a in worst standing than before.

Please don’t use it."

Dear Apple/IBM/Oracle,

I write to express my outrage!

When I was reading the troll website that is definitely still called Twitter because that is what it says in the SSL certificate, I saw adverts for your computer things!

Why are you giving money to the troll websites I am spending my time reading!?

You should be ashamed of yourselves.

I've a good mind to boycott your products even though I would definitely never boycott the troll website, clearly, because if I had I wouldn't been distracted by your advert from that thread by that conspiracy theorist I was enthralled by.

Please only advertise on products I don't read.

This honestly doesn't surprise me: Stripe Forbids Sex Work, But Profits From Non-Consensual Porn

If the company can feign enough vagueness then Stripe's practices don't catch sites that go against their ToS. https://www.404media.co/stripe-forbids-sex-work-but-profits-from-non-consensual-porn/

@thisismissem why does this not surprise me at all?

Like the entire #US #payment industry is full of hypocrisy:

Everyone there from the main Payment networks down to the smallest issuer and payment processor claim that gabling, sexwork, drugs and weapons violate their ToS but they all know that if customers can't pay at a full-auto range, a weed dispensary, casino hotel or sexworkers with their card, their revenue would go near zero and they'd all get fired within a week.

"But Bitcoin is a great way to monetize excess renewables"

No, this was never true. If you make a capital investment in a mining rig, then you want that rig making you money 24hrs, not just when the rest of the grid is not consuming renewables.

You become a baseload leech.

Bitcoin must die.

Now that's done with, I don't like #AnCaps but that doesn't mean anyone's off the hook for ableism.

And yes, #Bitcoin :bitcoin: and #Ethereum :ethereum: are worse than #PayPal :paypal: and #Cash...

IMHO #Monero :monero: is the least worst in terms of #payment because it's battle-hardened and with a 7+ figure bounty on it's security (by the #IRS alone!) one can assume that'll stay this way for tue time being...

Periodic reminder that if you ditch the zero-trust part, if you admit that trust matters even a tiny bit, you can ditch the consensus algorithm and run the entire blockchain exercise on one shitty five year old Android phone. A firstgen raspberry pi would be overkill. Seven transactions per second wouldn’t have stretched a 486 on dial-up in 1996 and the whole stack is an embarrassment.

kkarhan,
@kkarhan@mstdn.social avatar

@bhawthorne @mhoye so it it actually practical as a #Payment system, because the people behind it actually designed it with that single goal in mind without being reliant on a single point of trust or failure.

And unlike #Bitcoin or #Ethereum one can't taint your account with illegal funds, which is so rampant since the #TornadoCash ban that even #TreasuryDept's #OFAC recognized "#Dusting" as digital equivalent of throwing feces at a restaurant's windows....

  2. #Instagram was an image-posting competitor. #Facebook buys Instagram.

Yes. I know #Meta can't necessarily "buy" the #Fediverse, but their goal remains the same: Own everything that threatens you.

I noted in another thread that I suspected #Meta / #Facebook would be trying to #bribe #fediverse instances into federating with them, at least at first, until #network #effects could kick in.

For those #admins who have actually been on the receiving end of Meta's inquiries, can you say whether they offered or implied any sort of #payment or other #compensation?
