The future of selfhosted services is going to be... Android?
Wait, what?
Think about it. At some point everyone has had an old phone lying around. They are designed to be constantly connected, constantly on... and even have a battery and potentially still a SIM card to survive power outages.
We just need to make it easy to create APK packaged servers that can avoid battery-optimization kills and automatically configure an outbound tunnel like ngrok, zerotrust, etc...
The goal: hosting services like #nextcloud, #syncthing, #mastodon!? should be as easy as installing an APK and leaving an old phone connected to a spare charger / outlet.
It would be tempting to have an optimized ROM, but if self-hosting is meant to become more commonplace, installing an APK should be all that's needed. #Android can do SSH, VPN and other tunnels without the need for root, so there should be no problem in using tunnels to publicly expose a phone/server in a secure manner.
In regards to the suitability of home-grade broadband, I believe that it should not be a huge problem at least in Europe where home connections are most often unmetered: "At the end of June 2021, 70.2% of EU homes were passed by either FTTP or cable DOCSIS
3.1 networks, i.e. those technologies currently capable of supporting gigabit speeds."
PS. syncthing actually already has an APK and is easy to use. Although I had to sort out some battery optimization stuff, it's a good example of what should become much more commonplace.

None of the officially listed (German/European) #Nextcloud hosters publicly just admits to the version of Nextcloud they're running or what their adoption goal is.
I love #hosting.de, but they're also still on v25 - v26 was released in March (with v26.0.3 2 weeks ago), and v27 three weeks ago.

Kennt ihr eine App als Passwortmanager in Teams die auch 2FA Codes erzeugen kann? So wie 1password aber halt in der Nextcloud. :)
Was möchte man denn für Notizen verwenden, wenn man diese auf #Linux, #Android oder #Windows erstellen und bearbeiten möchte. Verteilt auf verschiedene Geräte sollen diese über #Syncthing werden.
Beim #Selfhosting der #Nextcloud steht mir gerade #IPv6 im Weg. Da es hier kein #DSL gibt, sind wir mit #Telekom#5g verbunden. Eine öffentliche IPv6 haben wir uns schon geklickt. Es gab aber noch nie Berührungspunkte damit. Herausgefunden haben wir schon, dass es sich um eine /64 IPv6 handelt. Wo und wie fängt man denn jetzt sinnvoll an? Als Router kommt eine Fritzbox 6850 zum Einsatz.
Update: danke für die Antworten. Nach aktuellem Stand konnte ich das (schon sehr alte) Problem lösen, indem ich in /var/lib/php/sessions/* nach dem Holzhammer gegriffen habe. Nicht schön, aber eine Teilerkenntnis schonmal..
ja ich weises doch auch nich... mehr als kram einstellen und php/nginx(🤷♂️) neustarten kann ich doch auch nich machen... und diese nextcloud instanz zeig das auch immer erst ab zweitem refresh nach fpm neustart an #nextcloud#php
For some reason I'm still only being offered version 27 releases of #NextCloud on the stable channel (unlike @ljo) but I'm still happy that the upgrade from 27.1.5 to 27.1.6 went totally smoothly. Great work as ever from the #NextCloud team.
#Hetzner offers #Nextcloud as a service (called Storage Share) with a 1TB of storage for only €5.11/month. That's a really nice price for a privacy-respecting, Europe-based personal #cloud.
They also offer a 1TB of just storage for 3.89/month in case you already have an instance of Nextcloud and want to expand its storage capacity.
Ok all this drama aside, super excite for by my #fairphone 5 shipping notification listing expected arrival as Monday - so I'll be able to pick it up Tuesday :)
That gives me this weekend to rig a #NextCloud#NixOS install so I can dump all my #iCloud photos to it. Excite :)

Je cherche des choses accessibles financièrement (pas spécialement gratuites), avec une page web claire où l'on sait ce qu'on achète comme service (beaucoup de #Chatons sont sûrement très bien, mais on adhère souvent avant tout à une asso militante, ça peut décourager et c'est pas toujours très clair). Et bien sûr hébergement dans un datacenter, pas une maison (ça exclut des chatons).
