It's crazy to think about how much #loneliness can deal damage to a person...can you believe that #smoking one pack per day is as deadly? And it's somehow so easy to take time away from #friends without necessarily even think about or notice the consequences!
Humans are #social animals. Take social away and get #depression.

Reach out to someone today! Or try out a (new) #hobby that lets you meet new peeps!
Also professional help is not a bad idea, if you feel stumped enough!

.

What experiences do you have about loneliness?

Be sure to check in on your friends and loved ones, regularly!

"Many previous studies have linked loneliness or social isolation with a higher risk of premature death and other health outcomes. But few, if any, have looked into how these associations depend on the combined impact of different types of social interaction, according to a new study published Thursday in the journal BMC Medicine."

The #pandemic took away so much from people and broke so many lives. But this is one such life that, in a surprising twist, is well remembered.

Sometimes lonely people just want someone to banter with. Even if just a few meaningless words. Try to remember that actual humans exist on the other side of the screen. Having some empathy really goes a long way.

New blog post on loneliness and time spent alone in daily life!

This provides insights into how loneliness and time spent alone change in relation to gender, age, and relationship status (single v partnered).

One finding: it's not about gender. It's about age and relationships.

We also found that the relationship between being alone and loneliness is different across the lifespan.

Dealing with car brain can have a huge positive impact on our health, too. When people frequently or regularly travel together then we make connections.
Think about it. Individuals going by car/SUV are shut away in their big metal boxes. From most angles invisible. Loud.
On bike, on bus, on foot… we can say hello and maybe catch up. So important.

Facing the tranquil morning, much like Sunrise, I'm reminded of the hope that comes with each new day. As the sun paints the sky with its gentle hues, I'm painting my aspirations for a brighter tomorrow. 🌅✨

While I sit here alone, I dream of a community where we're all united, standing by each other's side through thick and thin. Just as the sun's rays touch everything in its embrace, I want our bonds to spread warmth and support.

Lately, my health has been a battle – enduring cough, fever, dizziness, and the weight of three long years of mental stress. But this sunrise serves as a reminder that even the darkest nights eventually give way to the dawn.

With this post, I'm not just sharing a picture; I'm extending an invitation. An invitation to join me on my journey to build a space where goodness prevails, where we offer solace in times of need, and where we collectively strive for better days.

So, as the sky transitions from night to day, let's transition from isolation to unity. Let's come together and create a community where kindness is our foundation, empathy our strength, and support our constant. Here's to embracing brighter mornings, healing hearts, and nurturing connections. 🌄🌟

The Power of Pets To Heal & Comfort

When we tell other people about our problems and stresses, they usually try to help us solve them. But what we really need is connection, understanding, and care. Most pets, especially most dogs, are not only good at this on their own but they are also hardwired to do it.

If you’re reading this, you probably know how special it is to come home to a pet who has been waiting all day for you.

https://arstechnica.com/science/2023/07/lonely-people-see-the-world-differently-according-to-their-brains/

>Lonely people see the world differently, according to their brains
Brain activity differs among people who feel out of touch with their peers.

>To investigate what goes on in the brains of lonely people, a team of researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, conducted noninvasive brain scans on subjects and found something surprising. The scans revealed that non-lonely individuals were all found to have a similar way of processing the world around them. Lonely people not only interpret things differently from their non-lonely peers, but they even see them differently from each other.

>“Our results suggest that lonely people process the world idiosyncratically, which may contribute to the reduced sense of being understood that often accompanies loneliness,” the research team, led by psychologist Elisa Baek, said in a study recently published in Psychological Science.

>Baek want to see if there was something to an idea known as the “Anna Karenina principle.” Leo Tolstoy’s iconic novel Anna Karenina opens with the line, “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”

>In this context, Tolstoy turned out to be right. The fMRI scans showed that the reactions of non-lonely individuals to the videos they watched were extremely similar. Lonely individuals had brain activity that was not only significantly different from that of non-lonely individuals but was even more dissimilar from each other, meaning that each lonely person in this study perceived the world in a distinct way.

>Baek suggests that having a point of view different from others makes the lonely even lonelier, as they’re less likely to feel understood (though she does mention that it’s not clear whether this is a cause or effect of loneliness—or both).

>Anyone who is lonely can now be assured there is probably someone out there who feels just as isolated—just in a completely different way.

@NatureMC so glad you raised this here - i’ve been thinking about the wider social and cultural impact of too. Certain key social events might eventually become untenable (see this post I just did), but long before that individuals may be due to heat - and in general, as you say, make normal social life difficult and really increase especially for elderly and vulnerable 1/2
