I'm writing a longer (as it seems) article on the lock-in effect of solutions like #Obsidian that are using open formats like #Markdown for storage. The file format is not the only thing that might lock you in.
I did already start with a list of arguments but also want to collect your ideas so that I don't forget a good argument.
Please, no emotions, just facts and objective arguments.
Reply here in this thread and I'll collect ideas from it. 🙇
I really have to say that this is a really good tool once you switch from the #markdown default setting to the much better #orgmode syntax. 😉
I'll migrate the #Joplin data from my previous testrun over to logseq and go with that for the moment.
Don't worry, I'll probably never leave my Org setup. It's for another person's management and knowledge base where #Emacs was no option, unfortunately.
I've been wanting to see what the #ObsidianMD hype is all about, but I just can't get over how the only proper sync is the one that uses their own infra. I would love it if I could point it at my own infrastructure for that.
Sure, I could use sync clients, but those don't integrate well with the mobile app.
Anyone using a #zettelkasten tool like #obsidian, #joplin, #roamresearch etc) - do you really use the graph view and what does it help? How do you integrate it into your workflow?
I first thought I'd try it because I love mindmapping a lot, but I couldn't really make use of the graph so far.
I started tinkering with @obsidian, and I'm definitely impressed - the experience seems smoother than any other notetaking app I've used. But I'm still debating whether it's enough better than @joplinapp (my current default) to overlook the fact that Obsidian is closed-source while Joplin is open.
It's not like I'm a die-hard open-source-only disciple, but all other things being equal-ish, I do prefer to choose open source programs, and I'm now asking myself just how far am I willing to stretch that "ish".
Hey #PKM people, as it seems fashionable here to humblebrag by posting screenshots of graphs: What exactly are the benefits of a graph view? Aren't bi-directional links just simpler and thus more effective?
I've been seeing people raving about the note-taking app, #Obsidian, almost like a cult, and it got me curious. Then after some light digging and seeing why people liked it, most of it is really just what you'd normally find with #Markdown editors... some of which I think looks better and is more intuitive to use.
#Notable is my go-to for years now, and is available on Linux, macOS and Windows. Another popular one I normally see (but have never tried) is #Joplin which is open source and available on all platforms including mobile.
What I take away from this is... Markdown editors are awesome, and makes it super easy to get your ideas/thoughts out in a really organised way. I've primarily used them for all sorts of notes, work documents, tutorials, manuals, etc. and there's no going back from that.
A few days using #Obsidian, and I think I'm going to keep it. It's super polished, and I always wanted a personal #wiki, which is essentially what it is.
For me the main advantage over #Joplin is how good linking between notes works.
The biggest disappointment is that there's no built in #encryption
But the real star of this entire thing is #SyncThing, which is much better than I suspected when I glanced it a long time ago. Especially in combination with #TailScale.
#Evernote killed themselves years ago with their max-two-devices stunt along with the other limitations they imposed. It was once a great app. But hey, if they didn’t commit suicide, I’d have possibly never gone looking for something better, found #Joplin and then fell straight down the rabbit hole that is #Obsidian. 👍 https://mas.to/@alternativeto/111486901800161633
I've been using @joplinapp as my general note-taking, to-do planning application for a little while now and quite like it. However I'm missing the ability to archive things, for example I make notes for travel or something and then go to that place, and don't want those notes in the list any more but also don't want to delete them in case they're useful for someone else.
Has anyone come up with a better idea than making a "zArchive" folder and manually reproducing the structure of what I want to put in there?
Today, I tested #Joplin because people kept arguing that you keep your #Markdown files as local copies which prevents vendor #lockin.
From what I've seen today, this is not a valid argument. The md files are named with random file names, their content is not just md, it's md + JSON for some meta-data.
From what it seems, without Joplin, you'll lose your structure and your internal and external links. This would be a desaster to migrate to a different tool like #orgmode.
I think the OneNote feature I miss the most from things like Obsidian.md and Joplin is how easy it was to make tables in OneNote. Markup languages (including Markdown) are sort of terrible at tables.
Now Evernote is ditching the native Linux client. So people pay even more and get less.
It's a good thing I already ditched Evernote before my yearly subscription would have renewed a few months ago, or this would have made me mad. Now I can just point and laugh.
If there are still any holdouts hanging onto EverNote, I highly recommend @joplinapp and @syncthing
i really like #flatnotes, but it's a little bit too minimalistic ... thinking about switching to another #note taking solution ... but there are so many options. #obsidian , #logseq , #joplin ?
main requirements are that its needs to be quick and easy to use; syncing the notes between desktop and android phone (not through external cloud, needs to be #selfhosted) ... preferrably 100% #foss - so i guess obsidian is already out?
