Since #YouTube decided it's ok to inject malware to our browsers, I will not hesitate to use their infrastructure as a public service.
As luck would have it, @stfn posted yesterday a guide to #Invidious which I followed and in no time had an instance running.
It's not bad. YT doesn't serve 1080p video to third party apps, from what I understand, but I can live with that. I prefer controlling my viewing experience and not participating in their surveillance.

Für Dritte wird weiterhin der Youtube Link übermittelt.
Das Addon war in einigen Stunden erstellt. Ich teste es nun auf dieser Instanz.

Have y'all ever tried #FreeTube ? I started using it when youtube stopped showing video recommendations to those who keep their watch history disabled (which is my case) and ngl it's a very nice YouTube frontend that also works with #Invidious , for my phone I use #NewPipe and #InnerTune

I used to really like youtube for all the interesting content - especially tutorial videos of all kind. Lately I have become very tired of watching moving images for content that could be delivered in text form - where I can choose to read and take it in at my own pace, in silence....

Possible fix: someone uses #Invidious or #YoutubeDL to fetch a video file (in fact, Invidious enables you to fetch just the audio stream). Pipe that into a speech-to-text tool. Then ideally you should be able to edit it to make a readable abstract/truncated transcript.
In a perfect world™ you could post that to the Invidious page for that video to help others. But that’s not reality at the moment. Someone should submit an Invidious feature request so volunteers can share their text extracts.
Anyone in these parts use #Invidious as an alternative way to access YouTube?
I’ve started investigating it, and have imported my subs from YouTube, but am finding that the subs feed doesn’t show everything.
e.g Dankpods put up a video last night, which I can see in his channel, but isn’t showing up in my feed. And that’s not the only channel. There’s a number that are doing the same. Am I missing something?
@Jennifer It's the owner of the particular Youtube channel that has geoblocked them. This happens.
There are a number of "Invidious" servers around the world that allow you to watch Youtube videos without going to Youtube. There are other reasons to use Invidious as well including privacy and not having to deal with Google's trackers and "recommendations", and no ads.
Last days, I improved a bit PeerTube Companion, the Web #Extension helping you to know when a video you're watching on #YouTube is also available on #PeerTube.
Last versions improved compatibility with #Invidious and #Piped, added the ability to get redirected in more situations, and provided a new Notification mode.
This mode notifies you when there is a video instead of directly redirecting you to PeerTube.
@diarra you may use UntrackMe "UntrackMe once set by default to open Twitter, YouTube and Instagram links will transform them into Nitter, #Invidious and Bibliogram links and delegate the action to another app.
It also supports #GoogleMaps links to transform them into #OpenStreetMap links or Geo URI."
i'm not sure, but #Nitter and #Bibliogram don't work anymore as far as i know; #Invidious does (only some instances don't work anymore)

Apropos #Invidious auch dafür gibt es eine App im F-Droid #Clipious . Damit kann man sich unter #Android mit seiner eigenen Instanz oder anderen öffentlichen Instanzen verbinden. Über die Einstellungen sogar bequem wechseln

Self hosting als Nicht-Techie wg. ein paar Videoclips, die man ohne Bezahlung (jedoch nicht kostenlos 😉) auf #YouTube hat und auch downloaden und locker zu 100% aufs Flash Memory des Smartphones synchronisieren kann?
Macht für mich in Verbindung mit der Urheberrechtsthematik nun immer noch weniger Sinn...
Im Übrigen:
bei mir funktionieren ca. 3/4 der #Invidious-Links von den Posts anderer nicht direkt. Muss sowieso meist über "show on YouTube" oder so gehen.
Auch deswegen nutze ich YouTube nicht direkt, sondern Links über @invidious* oder nutze es mobil via @newpipe*, um Videos zu sehen und so weit frei vom Tracking zu sein. Leider sind noch nicht sehr viele anregende Videoproduktionen im Fediverse zB auf @peertube vertreten.
@ev mai avuto un singolo problema con YouTube usando il browser Brave. Blocca tutte le pubblicità e fa vedere i video senza problemi e senza attese.
Funziona perfettamente anche in siti di streaming tipo streaming community.
In alternativa ci sono le istanze invidious come https://i.devol.it ma serve impostare la risoluzione in HD720 altrimenti molti video (soprattutto musicali) si piantano.
