Interest to hear on our ham radio net about one of our amateurs telling the story of how he had to explain (to a couple of college kids) not only that there was an eclipse happening "why is it so dark... why is everyone out here with those glasses?" AND having to explain to them what an eclipse is. 😬 #eclipse#science#education
My view of the 3.5 minute totality in Sherbrooke Quebec, April 8, 2024. The surprise for me and clearly 100's of astonished people around me, was the huge difference between 99% and totality. At 99% the sun is still incredibly bright and you cannot look at with the naked eye. Then in an instant it sort of flashes and goes black and you can look directly at the eclipse without a filter. It was actually much darker on the ground than the camera made it look in this photo. #eclipse#eclipse2024
It's been a few days and I find my brain is still trying to find the right words that capture the experience of the #TotalEclipse.
There aren't many things in our world anymore that are quite so poorly captured by our "content creation" methods. Video, pics, posts – all are inadequate to the task.
Words & testimonials, when you find eloquent ones, seem more successful than the imagery.
I'd also say that among the thousands of photographs, the pics of the environment/landscape, and spectators are more evocative than yet another full-frame pic of a black circle with a fiery ring around it.
Such a shame the total solar eclipse was not visible in Europe...but well you can see some super amazing photos on tromnews.com/photos/ :) - here is my favorite:
I love our TROMnews website...I visit it every single day.
So many photos from the eclipse. I don't know what to do with all of them. Here's one of my favorite single subs. This was from just before the end of totality, and the prominences were incredible
I just posted a long thread about our eclipse adventures, but this was the only photo I managed. I hauled my fancy, expensive astrophotography gear up with ambitions of capturing a lengthy timelapse, but none of it worked (battery wouldn't power up despite a full charge, mini PC wouldn't connect to wifi hotspot despite dozens of prior tests). It was still well worth the experience, but I would have loved to capture some better photos.
Amigos from abroad
Any personal/or in group activity can be done inside any private place (you pay for it, for your confort and safe)...
But in a public place anyone can walk, jump, shout, sleep or stay ..no matter what: Mexico is for the mexicans and we can do what ever we want bc is in our law and constitution and our land..we arent putting in risk or attacking someone else
Cool map showing the date of the most recent total eclipse for every point in Indiana. Made by the Holcomb Observatory & Planetarium at Butler University.
Great concept, and I'm wondering if anyone has seen a similar map for a larger area, ideally an interactive map for the entire world where you can see the year of the last eclipse wherever you are. The data is available, so surely someone has made such a map?
The heart of #Christians are on full display following the #eclipse. Some delusional #Christofascist woman who was convinced that the eclipse would usher in the "#rapture" left huge tips for multiple servers prior to the event because she figured she'd be with #Jesus, and wouldn't need the cash. When she discovered that she was still on Earth after the eclipse, she was struck with #Biblical butt-hurt, and went back and demanded her tips back!
The #farRight continues to invent lies to prop up their fact-free worldview. It must be a constant struggle to make up nonsense to keep their fundamentally broken, anti-intellectual followers steeped in ignorance. To be clear, the media, including mainstream and progressive outlets covered Rep. #JacksonLee's factually baseless #eclipse claims almost immediately. But that doesn't fit the #rightwing narrative, so #TheBlaze has made up this bullshit.
America just had their total solar eclipse. Turns out here in Australia we are getting one in 2028, and it’s going right over Sydney where I live! Holy freakin’ hell!
Might be worth travelling to the Blue Mountains, somewhere like Lithgow, or even inland to Dubbo. Both have perfect dark skies for astrophotography. #Eclipse#TotalEclipse#SolarEclipse https://eclipse.asa.astronomy.org.au/eclipse-australia-2028/
I focused more on experiencing the solar #eclipse than taking pictures, but here are my pathetic-excuse-of-pictures at #totality. It was partly cloudy but luckily enough breaks throughout at critical junctures. The clouds did add interesting dimension to the experience, like the accentuated blue.
1 Fully eclipsed sun through thin clouds
2 Same as 1 but no clouds
3 Ultrawide shot w a star usually visible only at night. Do you spot it?
Even with all the eclipse photos circulating right now, this one made my eyes pop. Great shot of jet contrails breaking up the edge of the eclipsed Sun. Quick calculation: The Sun is about 30,000,000 times wider than the jet.
My solar eclipse experience was completely clouded out...yet the moment of totality was dramatic all the same.
I could see the shadow sweeping over the clouds, turning day to night, hearing the winds go still and the animals silent. I could feel the geometry of the solar system in motion. #science#nature#eclipse
Okay, I fell back asleep and feel slightly more human now.
Here, have a bonus meme (and likely the last #eclipse) one. Hope everyone has a good Wednesday.
