We struggle with wood chucks that dig everywhere, eat everything, get into buildings, etc. One of the hazards of trying to trap them is the occasional skunk getting into the trap. A very long stick with a hook on it is necessary equipment. This skunk didn't smell at all and seemed quite comfortable in the trap, to the point of taking an extended nap after I'd opened the door for him. I finally managed to lure him out with a fried egg and some sliced apple.

A 15' pole with a hook on the end has been used to open the live trap that the skunk got into, but since he's nocturnal he's more interested in snoozing and didn't leave through the opened door for more than two hours.

@thepoliticalcat We love our skunks, in part because they eat the ground wasp nests, but also because they have a schedule and come around on their route at just the same time every day, which I find very endearing. They rarely smell. They're also really good at cleaning off the barbeque grill cage if you happen to leave that lying around at night. 😕 But I've never had any real problem with them and when in the trap like this they seem to be kept quite calm by me chattering away at them.

My view of the 3.5 minute totality in Sherbrooke Quebec, April 8, 2024. The surprise for me and clearly 100's of astonished people around me, was the huge difference between 99% and totality. At 99% the sun is still incredibly bright and you cannot look at with the naked eye. Then in an instant it sort of flashes and goes black and you can look directly at the eclipse without a filter. It was actually much darker on the ground than the camera made it look in this photo.

A profusion of crocus in the lawn. Almost all those you see here were planted by ants, who take the tiny seeds and carry them to their homes but often either drop them or never eat them. It seems that very wet years, like the last three are particularly good for this. #garden #gardening #crocus

Some of the first crocuses this year, and what they're under now. On the plus side, the snow is likely to protect things from the rather cold temperatures that came in with it. #spring #winter #flowers #gardening

I came across this hedgehog in Greece a couple months ago, apparently disturbed out of its usual sleeping place and then ended up going to sleep next to the path I was on. As far as I could tell, it was perfectly healthy, just not too concerned about predators since they don't really have any in that area. Now home and feeling very jet lagged, I thought of this photo and decided I should share it.

Dramatic sky colors during the same storm that brought us the rainbow I just posted. #garden #gardening #weather

A little arrangement of flowers blooming in the garden now: Forget-me-nots, lily of the valley, and whatever those other things are ... the pink flowers and variegated leaves, something in the mint family. I thought this was a nice combination, and indeed quite fragrant thanks to the lily of the valley. #flowers #garden #gardening
