Bluesky, a decentralized Twitter-like social network, is pausing new signups “temporarily” to try and resolve performance issues it’s been experiencing after Twitter introduced limits on the amount of tweets you can see in a day. Day 177 and #Twitter users are surprised that #ElonMusk’s decision to remove #bluecheck validation is causing chaos and the creation of impersonation accounts. That could never have been predicted?
#Decentralized#SocialMedia is the solution for exposure to willful and arbitrary behavior by egomaniacal billionaires
Instead of being screamed at for attention by "influencers" (whatever THAT means), here on Mastodon/the fedi, I have great, regular conversations with REAL PEOPLE (that's the key here! REAL people!) about music, TV, science, and tech stuff, and I see art and photos of animals and things in space. It's just nice.
Well, I did it. Contacted 6 of my friends on Twitter who aren't here and I thought were the most likely to come over- the top ones I miss who aren't already here. One told me he couldn't figure it out, he's on Bluesky now. Still waiting to hear from the others, but expecting similar things. I think the feeling of starting over is too much for people? They're used to it? They like the high follower count? I don't fully get it. Whatever you want to call "engagement" or whatever, it's WAY more here. Even with separated instances, hashtag and search weirdness, it's STILL better here than Twitter or anywhere else. The only reason I wasn't here faster is because I just didn't know about it until November 2022.
#Telegram was blocked in my country (#Brazil) yesterday on all ISPs, and soon they will be removed from App Store and Play Store ... that's why decentralized communication apps are so important, apps like #Session and #Matrix are trending here right now.
Are "hard links" important or a nice to have in a filesystem?
I'm trying to assess possible feature compromises for a #decentralized / #p2p based #filesystem that can be mounted on multiple machines, so any views on the usefulness of hard links with examples would be appreciated.
One such compromise here is merging of changes made from different devices, that will be much harder with hard linking.
I wonder if some form of open Internet #multicast would be feasible (without being extremely prone to abuse). It would make truly #decentralized applications much easier to achieve.
My feed on here is so awesome. It's like this wild mix of everything I like, it's tech stuff and amazing photos of bees and bugs and nature, and a guy who posts about the different teas he drinks, a guy going through and analyzing Stephen King books and movies, funny and weird parenting stuff, all kinds of music, weird old web and computer and gaming stuff.. And it's all together here. And it's beautiful.
I'm sick of hearing about Twitter/X too, so this will (probably) be the last time I say anything about that garbage fire (as a main post).
Per this image, it looks like the block feature is being removed. Can you imagine all the awful, vile people you had blocked on there coming back and being able to harass you?
Delete X. It's run and owned by a fascist.
Download your tweets and delete your account if you want to be safe. You can stop using X. It's better here.
One of the speakers said #Mastodon is full of tech white people, but I think that misrepresents us. Theres a huge academic/science comm, media/journo folks, political activists, artists, as well as trans and LGBTQ folks all through those other comms. Mstdn IS a bit yank-centric, but that's changing. If you interview coders theyll tell you its techy, but interview others theyll tell a different story. Also, what about Lemmy, Firefish etc? #fediverse#activitypub#decentralized#ngi2023
How is anyone NOT using @mozilla#Firefox by now? Between this and intentionally slowing #YouTube traffic for Firefox/uBlock users, #Google is officially evil. Please support an #open#decentralized non-profit #Internet !

Zero ads.
My data stays on my server.
Interactions are genuine, driven by people's desire, not an algorithm pushing for conflict to boost engagement (and ad sales).
Nobody's here just because it's trendy. If you're here, you want to be here.
The best social media experience I've had in years.
Thank you to all of you, among these 15 million accounts, who have helped make this a wonderful place to be.
Bandcamp's new owners dismiss half of the platform staff. And they declare "It's business as usual".
Also Bandcamp is preparing to align with the other platforms.
All very predictable, I’ve been saying for a long time that a platform similar to Bandcamp, but decentralized, federated and open source should be created.
Holochain is an #opensource framework for building distributed peer-to-peer apps. We are excited to join this vibrant community and connect with all of you who are passionate about #decentralized#peertopeer#opensource tech on the Fediverse.
Let us say a little more about who is behind this account 🧵
You can't drag some people away from #Twitter and #Facebook, but it's baffling how people will cling to what they know by denying the value and engagement to be found on the #fediverse.
All this buzz around #decentralized federated social media in the hands of motivated people trying to build healthy sustainable communities is filling me with the kind of excitement I felt when I discovered forums and IRC.
"The promise of XMPP was to deliver federated instant messaging: anyone would be able to spin up an #IM server capable of exchanging messages with any other XMPP server in the world. Unfortunately, XMPP never delivered on this promise.
The goal of this project is to deliver on #XMPP's original vision: create a modern open platform for federated instant messaging with an emphasis on mobile communication. A secondary goal is to create a #decentralized IM platform..."
