Has the #Enshittification of #Ubuntu begun?

.deb packages are no longer installable: https://news.itsfoss.com/ubuntu-24-04-disappointment/

@happyborg@fosstodon.org avatar

@nilesh I've been using Ubuntu since v16 and never knew I could install .deb packages with the GUI until, now when I can't 🤷‍♂️ (as I am on 24).

I guess before long I'll be back on Debian.

The good thing is that we can easily leave #Ubuntu behind. Windows and Mac are much harder for people to leave.

I have a new laptop on the way and was forced to accept Windows on it. So maybe instead of Ubuntu I'll install #Debian Mint 🤔

Sorry @k9mail @thunderbird but I moved to #FairEmail (Pro) due to its support to S/MIME and the certificate offered by my provider #Posteo.
Thanks to Marcel Bokhorst for FairEmail

It's been years people are asking for S/MIME... and it was years I'm waiting as well. 🤷🏻‍♂️ https://github.com/thunderbird/thunderbird-android/issues/1003

@AAMfP @k9mail @thunderbird Interesting offer by . Just tried in on my pc and it failed with "Action not permitted" when trying to download the files (I guess). I would also much prefer to upload my own CSR that I generated outside of the browser. BTW, in Germany enables you to sign your PGP/GPG key by an official authority for free.

Danke schon mal

On 11, the whole system along with was taking 500 MB of RAM. On Debian 12, the system takes 850 MB of RAM. On Trixie/Sid-unstable, it takes 1.3 GB. I honestly don't know what they're shoving in it.

With and , it takes 1.6 GB on idle. Since when Cinnamon, a gnome2/gtk3 fork takes (or should take) as much RAM as Gnome4/gtk4? Something's amiss.

Anyone has an idea why for a few weeks, the under on Unstable (set via "setxkbmap -option compose:menu -option compose:rwin -option compose:rctrl -option compose:ralt") suddenly only works if I release it before pressing the first key of the wanted key combo?

If you see e.g. a "a instead of an ä from me, it's because I was used to already press " before I released the Compose Key. Very annoying and happens far too often. 🤬

So I found myself in a weird predicament. I had some older laptops that I converted to & with a bunch of added apps and games. I gave some to my family, and the rest I wanted to give them to kids for school. I asked around. Well, no one seems to want them. No one is using computers anymore in it seems, they only use . They barely browse the web too (just some gov sites). They just use and few apps, consoles for games. That's it.

It is absolutely mind bending how many options ffmpeg has. I've been trying to convince it to use the old Radeon 2600 Pro graphics hardware acceleration. No luck finding the magic command yet! :)

I've setup a few installs of Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) for family, friends, and myself. I really like it! Mint's Cinnamon desktop comes with sensible defaults, is easy to customize, and intuitive to use for new and old Linux users alike.

MintyFresh is my setup script for the latest release of LMDE 6 aka "Faye". It is ideally run after the first boot into a fresh LMDE install:

I hooked my GNU/Linux-loving son up with an old mini-PC that I picked up at a used AV store for about $50. For another $20, I upgraded the ram to 12GB.

He's got it setup it up with as his first home server, with which he's now hosting a few static websites and an internet radio station for his friends and family. He's got loads of resources to spare for when he gets into running larger services.

You don't need to spend $30+ a month on cloud services when an old recycled office PC will more than suffice.

The best part? Helping him troubleshoot his problems with and and all that fun stuff. I've already made every mistake possible over the decades, and he gets to benefit from that. That how it should work!

This is a painting I did a few months ago but hadn't share, until we bought a scanner here in . It arrived today, I scanned the painting under without any issues (or additional drivers), and I fixed the colors with . It's the first time I use The Gimp for my paintings (I've used The Gimp on and off since its inception, but not for my artworks). I've been using instead for my collages and paintings, but I stopped my subscription a few months ago. It's all now.

I have this diagram that I want to "deep zoom" into for more detail. It's not that complex or "deep" (yet?) but already showing it as SVG in a browser is "problematic"

I can make the zoom work, but it's really pixelated and crappy until it "rests" at the new zoom level for a while.

Also Inkscape is somewhat grumpy with the file already, even on a decent desktop.

So, obviously I'm using the wrong tools (or using them wrong) -- how should I make this appear on the web?

Using Inkscape:

A screen-recording showing a diagram in Inkscape that is zoomed into for more and more details.

@Scmbradley Not sure, but I should have defined that my solution-space is "software that I can run on a system".

What I actually want to do here is have this diagram on e.g. a https://meejah.ca blog post or similar (i.e. "a normal web site").

"prezi" looks like software I don't get to run, so I'm not super interested in that ..
