A total solar eclipse will move across the U.S. on Monday, April 8. People who are blind or visually impaired will be able to experience it as they grow colder and hear birdsong change along with the dimming light, but much of the effect is visual. Planetary scientists Cassandra Runyon and David Hurd have written a guide called “Getting a Feel for Eclipses,” which has tactile graphics that illustrate the paths of the 2017, 2023 and 2024 eclipses. They write for @TheConversationUS about why they made it, and how it works.
What is the sound of an eclipse? For Atlas Obscura, Sara Mellas writes about the LightSound Project, which was started by astronomers and engineers in 2017 and uses a sonification device to sense light changes and translate them into flute, clarinet and bassoon tones, as well as percussive clicks. A team of researchers from the National University of Singapore’s School of Computing (NUS Computing) introduced AiSee, an affordable wearable assistive device that helps people with visual impairment ‘see’ objects around them with the help of artificial intelligence (AI)."
I started creating miniature 3d printed buildings so that blind people can feel what they are like. So far I have 9 buildings, including the White House, Smithsonian Castle or the Independence Hall, but there is many more to come.

I've read about Daniel Kish before, but never had the opportunity to spend so much time with him. This short #documentary visualizes how his #echolocation technique works and shows him teaching it to younger #blind students. Transformative and beautiful, must-watch for anyone who's interested in #accessibility or #disability or #blindness.
I can't contact #Microsoft's #Disability helpdesk on #BeMyEyes. so what's happening is, when i tap on contact microsoft, the new intigrated #BeMyAI tries to help. and then, there is a call Microsoft button there in case the AI is unable to help. when I tapped on that button, it is not connecting to Microsoft, it is connecting me to a regular sighted volunteer. #Blind#Blindness#Accessibility

Author M. Leona Godin, who is blind, writes for LitHub about her new obsession with photography, and the obsession sighted photographers have with blind subjects, in particular, the tired trope of the blind pencil vendor.
"I want to document how I see the world so that I can show my children what I saw through my perspective,” he says. Gabriel describes this poetic way of preserving his sight as a form of comfort to himself. Being able to make full use of his eyes through #photographs while he still has vision cements a multitude of memories that he can share with others.
