TheQuinbox,

To anyone who's played with an Olympus LS-P5, does it have voice guidance? If so, it looks like an absolutely amazing replacement for the impossible-to-find LS-P4.

desertstar84,

@TheQuinbox I recently inquired when I noticed a tweet, or post, from them a couple of months ago. They've chosen to change their name to Om System now, and when I saw them post about the new recorder with a review article, I asked about the voice guidance, and sadly, it is not available in this model. The poster suggested that I purchase a DM 720, as it's still obtainable through Amazon. It's a shame they have no trouble recommending such a dated model, but no surprise I guess. Hugs.

bluenova,

@TheQuinbox na, my last one was the dm 620

BorrisInABox,

@TheQuinbox No, it doesn't. I asked a B&H rep about this recently.

TheQuinbox,

@BorrisInABox Damn. That's extremely disappointing actually. I don't want another H1 situation on my hands. What do you recommend for a tiny, good enough sounding recorder like that that actually has voice guidance?

BorrisInABox,

@TheQuinbox No idea. I haven't used such a recorder in years. I generally use an H1N even with it's lack of talkage. It records better than any Olympus I've ever owned, and it hasn't let me down critically yet. I get why you'd want something else though.

BorrisInABox,

@TheQuinbox What I'd love to have is something with the size of the H1N, the preamps of the F3/F6 with 32-bit float and voice guidance.

BorrisInABox,

@TheQuinbox Every Olympus I've owned had something stupid about it.
The LS100 did all kinds of weird stuff when phantom power was turned on, the battery life was horrible, and it used a weird battery. It had great internal microphones with a boring stereo image, and you couldn't properly protect it from wind without enclosing the entire recorder in a big fuzzy glove.

BorrisInABox,

@TheQuinbox The LS14 had amazing battery life as long as you got one of the old ones, but the SNR wasn't that fantastic, and you couldn't record at higher sampling rates without also recording at higher bit depth, which was pointless with that machine, given it had the effective dynamic range of about 12 bits. etc.

bryansmart,

@BorrisInABox @TheQuinbox All true about the LS14, but it has a good stereo image, and deals with high sound pressure well. It's pretty well designed for recording a meeting or small venue music performance. It is bad for recording anything quiet. The iPhone's stereo mics have a lower noise floor. Everything sucks differently. There's nothing great to buy.
