Why do #planes have headlights? I was just driving home from work and an #aircraft caught my attention. It’s a beautifully clear night #tonight, and I could see the blackness of the sky lit up by the beam of this plane’s headlight. They’re at about 7000ft when they pass over me en route to #MAN, but I have to wonder what’s the point? If they see another aircraft then #TCAS has failed spectacularly, so what exactly is the reason?

#GenuineQuestion for any #aviation people reading.

Weird thinking around , specifically in progress electric designs.

Most designs had been going for , but that's been kiboshed with the recent switch to for north america.

For now I've not seen any plans to address charging for international flights, and the charging infra needed there.

Are we really going to have multiple ports on small (<50 passenger) aircraft for charging?

CCS1+CCS2+NACS + {other}?

Also related is how NACS is limited to ~250 kW, vs 400kW for CCS

#Hydrogen has a role to play in the future of #aviation. But which one(s)? Fuel cell powertrains for #eVTOLs & regional #aircraft are emerging. What about hydrogen gas turbine aircraft? Which airport supply chains? Growing numbers of people are following @gretathunberg in avoiding plane trips — but greener travel can be costly.

RB-25 Mitchell. This was only the fourth North American B-25 to be built, and did not conform to the required build standard, so was classified as 'R' - not for 'Reconnaissance' , but 'Restricted'. It was adopted by General H.H. 'Hap' Arnold as his personal transport, hence the name 'MissHap'. An elegant aircraft, and an amazing survival from WW2.

Red planes over north Dublin right now: very noisy and low. Anyone know what’s up?

@ai6yr Absolutely true. It's called "density altitude", and is always a limiting factor at high airports, and becomes increasingly a problem at high temperatures. Aircraft may need to fly with less than a full load of passengers in those conditions. Light aircraft need to do those calculations, too, there are performance tables, which take into account air pressure and temperature.
