Did #Reddit year-end recaps expose #Russian interference in #Alberta? - StAlbertGazette.com https://www.stalbertgazette.com/local-news/did-reddit-year-end-recaps-expose-russian-interference-in-alberta-8223476 “When Reddit’s year end recaps were released — which give statistics on activity for individual subreddits such as top posts and comments — they indicated Russia was the third most common country of origin for users visiting many of these subreddits, causing moderators to rethink what was behind the trolling activity they had contended with a few months before.
It's been a long time since I was invited to leave Twitter, and I left (now I'm the happiest person in the world in Mastodon). Now they invite me to leave Reddit... where am I going? #twittermigration#reddit#helpmastodon
Re: Forum/community/UGC platforms selling data to AI/LLM companies to learn on.
I've owned and operated forums (and other spaces with UGC) since 1999. I have millions of pieces of content covering specific verticals in databases, written by people who are smart and deeply interested in those verticals. Some are from closed communities, some are live.
{ Reddit said in a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission that its users’ posts are “a valuable source of conversation data and knowledge” that has been and will continue to be an important mechanism for training AI and large language models. The filing also states that the company believes “we are in the early stages of monetizing our user base,” and proceeds to say that it will continue to sell users’ content to companies that want to train LLMs and that it will also begin “increased use of artificial intelligence in our advertising solutions.” }
Wasn't expecting an invitation to the #reddit IPO, but there you go. A decade ago I might've been interested, but today I just see "you made us some money, so here's an exclusive opportunity to make us some more money at your own risk!".
I'm not even in the right hemisphere to be eligible for this, nevermind a US citizen, which they could've seen if they even briefly glanced at my (long-abandoned) profile, but reddit haven't listened to anyone but themselves for a while, so I'm not surprised.
"If you are a certain kind of cynical, Reddit’s S-1 filing sets off alarm bells. There’s the mention of r/WallStreetBets. (Five mentions in total, actually.) There’s the stockpile it’s amassed of Bitcoin and Ethereum. And there’s the program to give certain power users the option of buying stock before it debuts on the public market."
Holy shit this is really going to be a bigger clusterfuck than expected huh
There’s gloomy speculation about the measures management may take to make the company profitable — which Subreddits might be banned, how much users might have to pay to post, a heavier ad load, etc.
They already Disallowed NSFW reedits from being accessed through the API (and therefore any third party apps)
Users are also mad that Aaron Swartz has been erased as a co-founder.
I gotta say, Reddit has some stones calling us “landed gentry,” forcefully removing/threatening to remove mods, and demonstrating just a general disdain for their own userbase, then following up it all up with “pwetty pwease buy our stock and tell us your real name” barely half a year later.
#reddit is going to sell their user data to #google so they can train their #AI and #LLM on reddit user data - apparently this could very well be a huge #gdpr violation.
@AlteredStateBlob made a good write up on what's going on and what you can do to enforce your rights and put a stop to this unbridled greed.
I'm honestly kinda sad. I'm not sure what to do on my phone anymore. #Socialmedia has become so stale and boring that I'm not even sure why I use it. Sharing experiences and communicating with people is great and all, but to what end? It's all become so fragmented now that I feel like I need 10 different accounts on different services. Frustrating.
