Particle physics and cosmology go hand-in-hand, despite the vast difference in scales. So when something new starts brewing in the quantum world, we pay attention. On this week’s Big Picture Science - could physics experiments take us “Beyond the Standard Model?”
The Power of God and Anime Podcast, Episode 2: Second Chances for Saul and Doctor Elise
Welcome to episode two of The Power of God and Anime Podcast! Listen as Mike gives his second, truer (?) origin story, sings a praise song you may never have previously heard, asks you this episode's Anime Trivia question, and talks about second chances and Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp. Anime Trivia! In That Time I Was Reincarnated As a Slime…
Learned something fascinating from the Återskapat #podcast. Amica Sundström and Maria Neijman have activated a major #Medieval source material that nobody seems to have touched before. There is no mention of it in the bibliographical databases. The huge KLNM encyclopedia has a single sentence about it: "Seals were often protected by fabric or leather bags and, towards the end of the Middle Ages, by metal cases" (15:194).
💾 NEW PODCAST!💾 We checked out Dungeon Keeper, the game in which you are the baddie, developed by Bullfrog Productions and published by EA at the very tail end of the DOS gaming era in 1997.
This was another huge hit for Bullfrog, but does it hold up nowadays? Let's find out!
Continuing my trend of living under a rock, I just found out there's a Nextcloud plugin that replicates gpodder.net for syncing podcast playback. It works with AntennaPod too (among others).
I take my 13yo #podcast episodes, some of which we recorded over Skype and sound pretty janky, run them through #LogicPro’s #StemSplitter, isolate the voices and process them through the #Adobe#EnhanceSpeech tool, then re-integrate it replacing the original voices and it actually sounds pretty good.
AI tools have their place (just probably not as information repositories.)
(Needless to say, I don’t have the original master recordings anymore.)
An unlikely cycling revolution is happening in Edmonton, Alberta. Despite freezing temps, lots of sprawl and an economy built on pulling oil out of the Albertan tar sands, the Canadian city is in the midst of a four-year, $100 million CAD investment in active transportation that will connect the city with a network of high-quality, protected bike lanes.
The whole band is back together for the first time in a while and we've got "excellent" news that Raspberry Pi is doing an IPO, another look at the Pi 5 after 6 months, our positive thoughts about Mozilla's new Executive Director, Félim's doubts about OSI's attempt to define open source AI, a very quick bit of KDE news, and more.
Something interesting is rumbling in the physics community. Are we on the brink of discovering a new force of nature? At least one particle physicist thinks so. We venture “Beyond the Standard Model” on Big Picture Science.
