> “Walking while Black” laws, first created in California in 1925 as a safety measure and lobbied by the automobile industry, are controversial due to racist enforcement and because they shame pedestrians while giving more protections to cars on the road
🚨🚨 🚨 "Trump’s DEMENTED PLAN has MAJOR RAMIFICATIONS"
"Trumps violent rhetoric is leading to THOUSANDS OF IMMEDIATE DEATH THREATS against judges and their families. Michael Popok explores pro-Trump MAGA websites and social media platforms where death threats are posted every minute of every day against law enforcement and judges just after Trump uses 'call to arms' violent rhetoric to attack his judges, just like what happened on Jan6."
#NYC's corrupt mayor (redundant phrase) had the #NYPD attack/assault Columbia students protesting #Gaza genocide after a private call with several pro-#Israel billionaires who promised political donations for his reelection campaign. Such a succinct example of how the sequestration of capital, political power, and violence within a tiny elite is the norm in this country.
Unleash the litigation gates! These universities calling the police on their students will be in litigation for years. And those costs don't include the $ NYC is bleeding paying for these cops.:
AFTER RAIDS, NYPD DENIED STUDENT PROTESTERS WATER AND FOOD IN JAIL
STUDENTS ARRESTED DURING the police crackdown on protests at universities in New York City last week were denied water and food for 16 hours, according to two faculty members at Columbia University’s Barnard College who collected reports from students who were inside.
Other students reported that they were beaten by New York City Police Department officers after their arrests and taken to the hospital for injuries before being returned to central booking. Photos of the injuries were provided to The Intercept.
An anti-Israel student group at #Columbia Law School sent a threatening email on Friday telling #Jewish students that they will be neither "safe" nor "free" until "everyone is safe" and "Palestine is free."
The National Lawyers Guild chapter that defended #Hamas#Oct7 attack, put out a statement condemning school for calling in #NYPD to clear out occupied building.
The statement told #Jews that they are not safe & accused Jewish students who oppose divestment of threatening everyone's safety.
While this report by @guardian could be improved by refraining from describing deputized, state-sanctioned violence as "anarchy" and playing into the statist "anarchy = violent chaos" trope, this is otherwise good reporting which you won't find anywhere in the NYT these days.
"The #NYPD is stepping up patrols outside #synagogues and other houses of worship across the city, after more than 20 synagogues received #bomb threats this past weekend. No #bombs were found in any of the buildings."
“The next night, on Tuesday, the 64-year-old silver-haired scholar stepped outside his apartment building, located off campus across the street from Columbia. He wanted to record iPhone video of hundreds of #police responding to historic student protests against #Israel’s war in #Gaza. Fifteen minutes later, the #NYPD arrested him ….
But Pflugfelder was never on campus ….
Pflugfelder's arrest … is among the first of 282 people put in custody at or near #Columbia”
“Imagine being a librarian who has just been told that the annual budget has been slashed and then you look out the window and see that Eric Adams has given the #NYPD two Decepticons and a fleet of sentinels to take down a few dozen college kids who had a sit-in.”
“Rebecca Weiner is a #Columbia U. professor who also serves as intelligence director of the #NYPD. Mayor Eric Adams credits her with spying on anti-#genocide student protesters and directing the militarized raid that dislodged them from campus.”
The #NYPD in particular, and #cops in general, are such fucking clowns.
They're claiming the thick chains protestors at #Columbia used when occupying a building are proof that the protesters weren't real students.
In fact, not only are those chains widely used by students all over the city... Columbia itself sells them to students.
Don't fall for the NYPD's attempts to manufacture consent for violently attacking peaceful protesters. #StudentSpring#politics#ACAB
