Congressional Leaders Strike Deal on Final Spending Bill Ahead of #GovernmentShutdown
Lawmakers resolved disputes over #DHS funding, paving the way for an agreement. But they may still be unable to meet a Friday deadline to avert a brief partial #shutdown.
The House on Thurs approved #legislation to extend the expiration date for #FederalFunding later into March, sending the measure to prevent a partial govt shutdown that was set for Sat to the #Senate, where it is expected the pass.
The Senate on Thurs passed #legislation to keep the #federal govt open into March, kicking the measure to the House as #Congress continues its struggle to approve long-term spending #laws.
A band of House conservatives tanked a procedural vote Wednesday in a rebellion against the spending deal Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) struck with Democrats, which members of the right flank have sharply criticized.
The bipartisan funding framework congressional leaders have reached moves us one step closer to preventing a needless government shutdown and protecting important national priorities. It reflects the funding levels that I negotiated with both parties and signed into law last spring. It rejects deep cuts to programs hardworking...
The U.S. Senate voted late last night to avoid a government shutdown.
ABC News reports the move "will keep the government funded at 2023 levels. The bill extends government funding until Jan. 19 for the Veterans Affairs, Transportation, Housing and Urban Development and Energy departments, as well as for military construction. The rest of the government is funded until Feb. 2."
Alarming🚨: McHenry has some power over the House. The "temp" is just another #MAGA R, but the danger is deadlock: #UA funding, a possible #GovernmentShutdown on Nov 17...: He may call the House to order, make announcements, answer parliamentary inquiries, rule on points of order & designate another speaker pro tempore. But he may not administer the oath of office to a member-elect without unanimous consent or specific HSE approval, among other restrictions. #GOPSabotagehttps://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/10/04/patrick-mchenry-house-speaker-mccarthy/
Grand Old Fascist Party removes Speaker of the House because he had the decency to not let the government default on its responsibilities for, let me check notes, 6 more weeks.
And 1/3 of the population support these asshats because they want to burn everything down. But of course they get half the house seats because gerrymandering.
#Republicans averted the self-inflicted wound of a #GovernmentShutdown this weekend. The main casualty of the process was #aid for #Ukraine, but foreign aid was always a fig leaf—for both #GOP#dysfunction & the determination of a small group of Republicans to help #Russia.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The threat of a federal government shutdown was suddenly easing Saturday after the House quickly approved a 45-day funding bill to keep agencies open, once Speaker Kevin McCarthy dropped demands for steep spending cuts and relied on Democratic votes for passage....
So sick of seeing reports that Kevin McCarthy has run out of options as "congress" hurtles toward a shutdown. He could put the Senate's bipartisan CR on the floor today, pass it--and keep his job--with Democratic votes and effectively neuter his Crazy Caucus. Dems care about governing and not harming millions of people.
It would invite tons of blowback, but he has a security detail. #governmentshutdown
WASHINGTON, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Hardline Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives on Friday rejected a bill proposed by their leader to temporarily fund the government, making it all but certain that federal agencies will partially shut down beginning on Sunday....
A reminder to all journalists: most in the GOP don't MIND a government shut down because a core of their philosophy is disemboweling government and then complaining how government doesn't work. The impacts to people, the economy, and the environment don't matter to them. #shutdown #governmentshutdown
Mitch McConnell has announced that the Senate GOP will not pass bipartisan legislation from the Senate to fund the government, and is instead hoping to pass the incoming bill from the House that was recently passed with Democratic support.
Apparently some Reps are saying their staff are “essential” so that they can keep working on the “impeachment” during the Government Shutdown that they caused.
The Speaker of the US House of Representatives is a coward: “At any point, McCarthy could bring up before the House the bipartisan measure already passed by the Senate. Democrats would then likely make up the votes he would lose in his own conference. But the extremists would then challenge his speakership, and that is apparently a challenge he is unwilling to brave.”
