Mondays for the next six weeks are my photos from the Vasquez Rocks (sometimes known as Star Trek Rocks because of their frequent usage in that series and other Sci Fi movies and TV shows).
The unexpected Coloradan orange of Lewisian gneiss on Oldshoremore beach, Assynt. That intense blue, that white sand - like reality got a filter for the day. Something sculptural about this elemental geometry - a vast frieze carved out by the millennia.
Rocky Mountain Section of #AAPG is meeting June 5-6 in Bismarck, #NorthDakota with core workshops before and #geology field trip after. Early bird registration now!
This looks like a step forward in the science of earthquake forecasting.
A team from Sandia National Laboratories have studied the release of noble gases caused by induced underground explosions. Their detection could be one day use to monitor earthquakes or explosions.
Earth’s core is a mysterious and fascinating place we can’t see or touch. Mark Kaufman explains what we know and don’t know about the core and how it affects our planet. His article also explores some of the challenges and opportunities for studying the core.
'Twenty years after the Old Man of the Mountain collapsed, people around the world will now be able to explore the iconic symbol of New Hampshire through an online interactive 3D model created by Matthew Maclay, a graduate student in earth sciences at the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies.'
Visit to Devil's Garden on my Grand Staircase Escalante trip in Utah. Variety of sandstone hoodoos, arches and bizarre spires from the Entrada formation deposited 175 million years ago, Second is Metate Arch and fourth is Mano Arch, background of third is the Straight Cliffs running for 50 miles south to the Colorado River. #Photography#Utah#Geology#Devil's Garden #Hoodoos
TIL that the Cayman Trench under the Caribbean Sea plunges to 7.6 km depth. I knew there were tectonic plate subduction zones in the Caribbean, but I didn't realise they cause trenches that deep. I thought deep ones like that only occurred on the Pacific plate rim.
A nice demonstration of how #geology underlies #ecology - different #lichen communities growing on Lewisian gneiss and a basalt dyke within it. #Raasay, #Scotland.
Hiking trip in Capitol Reef National Park in southern Utah at this time last year. Amazing geology shown in this photo. This year heading to Utah again in a few days but to hike in the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. Looking forward to going going back there after many years. #Photography#Geology#CapitalReefNationalPark
Well, I have an odd hobby. I like to read and find news stories I think are worthwhile, both to keep from being blindsided by events and to stay well-rounded and informed.
My slant does tend to be human rights/justice oriented
