Maud Cruttwell's quasi- #feminist novel, Fire & Frost (1913/2018), set in early C20th Florence & Paris is a racily written tale for a mismatched marriage within the community of wealthy ex-patriots. While containing a rather exaggerated caricature of a young macho Egyptian, the book is an interesting attempt to make a feminist novel out of a more 'regular' plot lines & mostly succeeds. If not a masterpiece it remains enjoyable.
Kamala Harris parroting the new Biden's campaign about the importance of voting him for safeguarding reproductive rights. I was already cringing (Roe v Wade happened without Biden giving a flying f*ck)
If anyone thought that couldn't be a lowest #feminist take than #WhiteFeminism, welcome to the Democrats reducing it to an electoral campaign devoided of any meaning.
I taught my first class sessions of the semester this week, and in person! We discussed institutional and systemic #racism, black #feminist thought on classroom community, etc. And it's a science teaching course. The students (very diverse ethnically, linguistically, etc) were engaged and excited by our discussions. Which makes me feel like we're gonna be OK in the future.
I'm, glad I don't work at an insitution of #HigherEd in FL or TX. Equity and justice are the foundations of teaching and learning.
Cheap Perfume is a #feminist#punk outfit that is also funny and political! With anthems like, "It's Okay to Punch Nazis." I love the way Stephanie and Jane layer their vocals over one another.
I was telling a story about that time in band camp (i.e., Work) I got all the younger women on a team to stop doing the labor of some dude who weaponized his incompetence and I realized how often that's a part of my work narrative.
SNORT.
See? That's what it means to live a #feminist life. It's more than theory. It's PRAXIS.
If you're going to smash the patriarchy, make terrible dudes quit their jobs so that the women on their teams can thrive.
The #Israeli attacks on Gaza have resulted in the mass slaughter of Palestinian #women and #children; this violence is part of the state’s genocidal strategy. Reported daily in the Arab media but either neglected or minimized in mainstream Western media, the violence directed toward Palestinian women and their children is clearly neither an unintended...
One book I was hoping to read this year actually made it into the public domain: Orlando by Virginia Woolf. The movie with Tilda Swinton is great, looking forward to the book.
Eunice Lipton's, Alias Olympia: A Women’s Search Manet’s Notorious Model & Her Own Desire (1992), is rather odd. Its artly memoir, part record of the author's frustration at being unable to really find out that much about Victorine Meurent & partly a ventriloquised account of her (imagined) autobiography, While actually rather readable & entertaining, it doesn't really look like #arthistory, but that may be the - #feminist - point?
"Ozempic shows us why we cannot trust this corporate feminism: It is a feminism of aesthetics and individualism and commercial opportunism, not of political commitment. As soon as the cruel honesty of capitalism tells Mattel that it’s in their best interest to do so, they’ll leave feminist Barbie behind, the same way they abandoned the plus-size models and the body positive photoshoots."
#CfP for "The #Archival is Political", a special issue of #Rejoinder, which will address the "politics of the #archive as an object of fascination for #feminist/queer scholars and activists".
remember when early political bloggers of what y'all now call the #netroots, protested both the appointments of #JohnRoberts and #SamuelAlito to the bench?
i even co-wrote a statement for the #feminist blogger network where we were very clear eyed about Samuel Alito's history of targeting not just women in his decisions but girls and women of color.
this is one of those #ToldyaSo moments i detest saying, but told ya so
