12 years ago my housing #cooperative invited #BoulderCouncil candidates over for tea and cakes to talk about repealing laws that make it illegal to share housing in #Boulder. Many years of advocacy to enable co-ops as a special case and multiple city ballot measures and lawsuits later, only now is it finally coming to a vote. In the meantime Boulder housing costs have more than doubled. A live stream of the public hearing:
The first speaker, Cedar Barstow, has worked on this issue for 27 years. In the 1990s she was caught living overoccupied and sentenced to community service (after having to kick out her housemates).
She used her community service hours to help start the Boulder Housing Coalition, a non-profit #cooperative#housing developer.
Question for #coop people : I want to improve the langauge on how #CoSocialCa talks about member share purchase and the annual dues we ask people to pay. Do you have any great examples of how #cooperative / #platformcoop have done this?
Excited to be working on the Co-op Hackathon in London, 19 & 20 October from #cooperativesuk. Join in!

I'd like to announce not one, but TWO new #Discord servers for #Neurodivergent people in the #UpstateNY area! Both have been in the works for a while, but have now actually launched. If they apply to you and you're interested, I would be overjoyed if you joined either or both. If the links have expired by the time you're reading this, feel free to message me.
The first is a general server for #Autistic people with any connections to anywhere in Upstate NY. Open-minded #Allies seeking to listen to autistics and become better allies are also welcome. It's a #SafeSpace for building #Community, making #Friends, chatting, and possibly hanging out together IRL or planning #LocalActivism. This server is pro #Neurodiversity, pro #SelfDX, #Intersectional, and not for parents or service providers (unless you're autistic yourself).

The second is for the Neurodivergent #Solarpunk#Anarchist Community Space. This is a very long-term project for a brick-and-mortar #Cooperative community space in the #FingerLakes area. The hope is that, when the place can actually be built, it will be a site for #MutualAid, #Permaculture, #Education, #Recreation, and all sorts of other projects of, by, and for the community, with the overarching goal of building and supporting neurodivergent solarpunk anarchist community at a local level. This cooperative also embodies the hope of bringing genuine #Joy, #Connection, and #Inspiration to the world as a whole.

Catalyst is an all-remote worker #Cooperative focused on open #DataEngineering, analysis, and open source software. We mostly work with public US data related to the energy system, pulling together information from #FERC, #EIA, #EPA, and other agencies and trying to turn it into analysis-ready database tables so advocates, policymakers, & researchers can focus on their own novel work instead.
:TwinPines: Chapter 4 of the audiobook version of @luisrazeto's #Cooperative Enterprise & Market Economy just dropped! (translated by @Matt_Noyes, and read by yours truly).
The reason why #rent hasn't skyrocketed in my hometown compared to the average is because instead of "just #privatizing" by selling off public-owned assets like city-built #housing for cheap to #HedgeFunds and #BigRealEstate corporations, the city spun off said holdings into a #cooperative that has non-profit status, at least reducing any gentrification against seniors and low-income households.
@coopartisans has reached 73% of their funding goal for the end of the month! Will *you, (yes, you!) join the effort to develop an artisan-owned alternative to Etsy and their predatory practices?
Worker/artist owned cooperative — with distribution, to tell their own stories. Images below.
Workers, writers, and artists start a cooperative production company
They license/option existing stories to the company (which they own together!) and put stories on a website where audiences can access them
Stories can be scripts, treatments, readings, storyboards — it's great material in those formats, and people will dive into those stories just the same
Share the website (distribution!) with followings, along with a way to subscribe
You now have a worker/writer/artist owned cooperative, with distribution, stories, and an audience!
More details in the images below, made as a guide/resource to be helpful.
I've been a customer to my #cooperative#bank for like ever and I think that cooperatives are inherently better than (public) corporations because they're legally forced to care about sustainability and the interests of their member-owners, and not be beholden to the ideas of a few big hedgefunds.
I've really enjoyed being part of social.coop and am itching for more sustainable services. I recently ported my Github repos over to #codeberg and been loving it. Appreciate any responses!
Serious journalism. A core team of #journalists and a network of trusted European media partners, supported by many #translators to reach a wider audience. Pieces come out in 4 European languages, and their website runs in 10.
In 2017 they became the first European media #cooperative.
Two topics covered recently:
Romanian women looking after elderly people in Italy
Loving the DisCO Manifesto. Gotta love this destruction on IBM..
"IBM built its supercomputer on top of many years of failed experiments and defeats, but the corporation that assisted Nazi Germany in identifying, segregating and exterminating Jews persisted until they were proven right. They had the necessary capital to not only indulge unlimited dead ends, but to increase the likelihood of a future where their vision would prevail."
Basically, Etsy enshittified, making an income on etsy is worse and worse, the company ignored the strike, now its time to move on to a cooperative alternative, @coopartisans
There hasn’t been any grocers in this town of 28,000 people for 15 years. Now a group of locals wants to change that by opening a community-owned greengrocers.
Working with local growers and food producers, it will create a permanent outlet where people can buy local food. Veg will be loose and they’ll stock local and heritage varieties.
Chris Dobbs is one of the suppliers they've lined up: “Over the years we’ve lost the connection between our local farms and our local households, but Carrick Greengrocers is going to tie those back together and get fresh food from farms into people’s homes. Being so close, I can get vegetables off the farm and into the grocers in 10 minutes.”
The project is giving people a chance to become co-owners and raising funds to open the business by June with community shares. If successful, it would be the first community-owned business in Carrickfergus, and the first community-owned greengrocers in Northern Ireland.
