, 97, among dozens arrested in protest

26 November 2023

Sydney, Australia, Nov 26 (EFE).- "Dozens of protesters, including a 97-year-old man, were arrested on Sunday during a protest off Australia’s east coast that disrupted operations at the country’s biggest coal export port.

" group had organized the protest to block the traffic of coal cargo ships in the port of Newcastle since Saturday.

"The group said on its Twitter account that at least 59 people have been arrested so far.

"Since Saturday, groups of 50 to 60 protesters have been taking turns in rostered two-hour shifts getting on canoes and inflatable boats and preventing ships from leaving the port.

"Among the protesters who went out to sea was Alan Stuart, a 97-year-old religious pastor.

"Stuart said he was doing it for his grandchildren and future generations after being pulled out of his boat by the police.

"'I am doing this for my grandchildren and future generations because I don’t want to leave them a world full of increasingly severe and frequent ,' he said. 'I am so sorry that they will have to suffer the consequences of our inaction. So, I think it is my duty to do what I can and to stand up for what I know is right.'

"Rising Tide claims that the protest prevented more than half a million tonnes of coal from leaving the Newcastle port by the time the demonstration ended.

"Protesters demand that the Australian government stop all new projects that involve the use of fossil energy and confront the more decisively.

"The climate crisis is one of the big issues of political debate in Australia, a country exposed to the effects of and .

"Australia is the world’s second largest exporter of thermal coal and the largest exporter of cooking coal."

Jacob Johns, an indigenous artist from Spokane, is recovering after a shooting in New Mexico.

"Johns is out of critical condition, Ferguson said. He and his son took a two-day drive to Albuquerque to see Johns in the hospital.

“Wasn’t until maybe three, four days ago they took the bullet out," he said.

"Though Johns is still battling infections and has had multiple surgeries. The bullet, which entered his torso and stopped in his back, hit multiple organs.

"Davis thinks of Johns as a man who never sits still for long, someone who take trips around the world and comes back to Spokane to dash together 50 paintings before his next trek."

update - posted 10/9/2023 by fundraiser organizer Carlos Martinez

"UPDATE: Spoke with Jacob Johns family for the first time since the shooting.

"As today marks , Jacob's family wanted to send a message to please continue to pray for him. As of this morning 10/09/2023, he awaits his health improving, so doctors can proceed with 3rd surgery since the shooting. They are asking everyone to please end the violence and hate towards all , not just today but everyday. It was his honor to stand as a peacekeeper for his brothers and sisters and their children. They send thanks to everyone that got involved and saved his life. His family also wanted to thank everyone that has donated to help him on this long and tough recovery process, and asked for us all to bring logic to chaos.

"We were able to see Jacob via video and he is having fevers due to losing functionality of some organs, difficulty breathing due to wounds inflicted on his chest and lungs, and is facing an unknown amount of surgeries on his very long road to recovery. We ask that everyone please continue to keep him in your prayers, and media to be patient with requests as Jacob's care and safety is the first concern.
Thank you."

As of today, 10/10/2023, the fundraiser is up to $245,888 ($250,000 goal). Thanks to everyone who has donated and shared this. Please keep Johns in your thoughts (and prayers). He has a long way to go...

Gunman Wearing MAGA Hat Shoots at New Mexico Protest over Statue

October 03, 2023

"In New Mexico, a 23-year-old gunman wearing a red MAGA hat opened fire last week on and other Indigenous activists opposing plans to reinstall a statue honoring the 16th century conquistador Juan de Oñate, New Mexico’s first colonial governor. Johns, the prominent climate activist, was airlifted from Española to an Albuquerque hospital and required emergency surgery. We speak with Malaya Peixinho, who participated in Thursday’s gathering, about how the statue of the colonial leader has divided the local community. 'It is a really controversial thing to talk about ,' says Peixinho, who believes funds for the statue could go to social programs instead. 'That feels more important than funding a statue being resurrected.' The shooter, Ryan Martinez, was arrested and charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for shooting Johns and aiming the gun at Peixinho, who calls the charges 'fair' and blames police for not intervening. 'They didn’t show up for us,' says Peixinho."

#JacobJohns Shot at #Onate Prayerful Protest Undergoing Surgery

By Carlos Martinez Censored News, September 29, 2023

"#Indigenous #ClimateActivist, artist, musician, and father Jacob Johns was shot in the chest this morning, Sept 28.2023, during a No Juan de Oñate statue peaceful protest in #Tewa territory (more commonly known as Española, New Mexico). Jacob put his body between women and children when the shooter charged towards the altar. He was air-lifted to a hospital in Albuquerque and had surgery.

"The shooter, who was wearing a red #MAGA hat, is in custody of tribal police. We ask everyone to please pray with us that he survives this surgery and that doctors have the strength and wisdom to help him.

"Jacob, who is Hopi and Akimel O'odham, has dedicated his life to Indigenous and #ClimateJustice. He is a skilled muralist and speaker, and specializes in non-violent, peaceful 'artivism'. He has a teenage daughter, Lily, she and his other family are currently flying from Washington State to Albuquerque New Mexico to be by his side.

"This inspirational man has put his life on the line over and over again to make a better world for his fellow humans, and now he and his family need your support to recover from this terrible hate crime. As you can imagine, being a climate activist is not lucrative work to readily afford major life- saving surgery. We are humbly requesting your donations to help cover his recovery, his medical bills, and to help support his family needs during what will likely be a very lengthy recovery period.

"This comes just two months before Jacob will be leading an #IndigenousWisdomKeepers Delegation at #COP28 to advocate for #IndigenousSolutions to #ClimateChange. Please pray with us for his recovery and donate if you can."

have been seeing the “people need to get engage in ” argument quite a lot recently, and it’s made me reflect.

For me, hope doesn’t actually come into it. I don’t care whether we have “hope” or not. For me it’s anger, fear, responsibility, guilt, and perhaos also (just to add one positive one) a growing sense of personal empowerment that drive me to try everything i can. These are all very strongly motivating emotions too

Yes, I know… sadly the vast majority of my really great, wonderful #ClimateActivist network from Twitter did not migrate here, either staying on #Twitter or going elsewhere. I did sign up for #ProjectMushroom but was on the waiting list for about two months, by which time i was already happily installed here on mastodon.green. It’s a real shame how it’s all splintered but I am very happy with the new community I have found here

I learned this from an fellow (activist in the loosest sense - people who do things about ) and you can read more here. I am not an expert on this myself, but the Iroko really is one of our
