We need ActivityPub platforms that go beyond core social media concepts. @bonfire is exploring modular extensions and access control as building blocks for creative ideas.

Here's my guide to the install process on my little homelab system.

Authorized Fetch Circumvented by Alt-Right Developers

(Quoting part of the article...)

Alex Gleason, the former Truth Social developer behind Soapbox and Rebased, has come up with a sneaky workaround to how Authorized Fetch functions: if your domain is blocked for a fetch, just sign it with a different domain name instead.

Mastodon has been providing a half-measure to its users for years. Now it’s the time to make things right: going into 2024, I think it’s going to absolutely be a requirement to develop more robust forms of privacy options and access controls to empower users.

Bonfire is doing an incredible amount of research focused on this very problem, and Spritely has put forward some groundbreaking work on Object Capabilities in the recent past.

An update on Bonfire

The upcoming Bonfire project describes itself as a social networking toolkit, that allow communities to create and shape their own digital spaces, and have released some new information about some parts of their upcoming project. Bonfire is a fediverse server project in development, with its own take on the microblogging format, and tools to customise it for your community.

Bonfire Classic has been in development (and available for testing) for a while, and the new information is on the other apps that can be build with Bonfire. The team is working on an Open Science version of Bonfire, as well as a Communities version. For the Open Science version, features like integration with your ORCID (‘Open Researcher and Contributor ID’), and better embedding of scientific papers are a part of it. For the Communities version, the team is collaborating with Radio Free Fedi, and the features centre around public and private groups, and topical discussions.

The Bonfire team is also working towards a cooperative hosting network, to make the hosting of a Bonfire more accessible to communities. In September 2023 the Bonfire team indicated to be working towards a 1.0 release in the upcoming months.

At present, #bonfire discussion page lacks any statistical data about the thread, a feature that is pretty common in most of social networks or forums. These platforms typically display a total count of replies, boosts, likes, and participants ....

I'm looking for a customizable, resource-efficient Mastodon #fork. Somehow I cannot find a recent post on that. #Bonfire? #Rebased? Or go non-Ruby, like #Pleroma (nah), #Misskey #Calckey #Lemmy (hui)?

This is part of an endeavour to host w/ a #RaspberryPi & #solarpower. #MastodonMigration

Potential features:

  • tweaking network traffic
  • media options: off, auto compression, auto delete
  • monitoring server metrics, energy flow, sharing data through a bot
  • auto-off when battery low, sad emoji

This noob is testing the interconnectivity of the :

The word out there on the Fediverse make it seem as if all the different tools (Mastdn/P-tube/Lemmy/etc.) can interact with one another. But this is not the case, as some work both ways, whilst others only one way, or at all.

So made accounts & been testing for past few weeks:

@news has a good overview of Bonfire, a modular fediverse platform. It includes post and reply moderation controls that are lacking in other platforms right now.

🔥 Bonfire Offers Framework for Next-Gen Fediverse Platforms
— wedistribute.org

"In Bonfire extensions are not reserved for bonus features contributed by third parties (as is typically the case for many platforms), but every piece of the core software is packaged in an extension so it can easily be forked or swapped out for another extension with a different design or value proposition."

Discover a world of learning with JSTOR!! 🌍📚

I would like to share a website I found the other day, a digital house of knowledge known as JSTOR!

Imagine having millions of academic articles, books, and crucial primary sources right at your fingertips. Whether you're diving deep into historical documents or exploring contemporary studies, JSTOR's extensive library is rich with opportunities for discovery and enlightenment.

Yes #f1000research does it properly but still it costs ~1K.
That is why I believe to that scientists have to change the Infrastructure they use for research publishing/review and funding.
We need a scientific network that university/state lends the infrastructure to keep research progress on it, instead of using private journals archiving our articles and data. The Infra is here: #zenodo we just need to transform it to a social scientific network, hopefully #bonfire will be one way.
