Today I learned that #spiders can use electric fields to propel their silk strands through the air, allowing for longer flights than wind alone would provide.
I was stunned and amazed.
And then I remembered that spiders have been evolving for more than three-hundred million years. Their super-powers should come as no surprise to anyone.
For all your boycotting needs. I’m sure there’s some mods caught in lemmy.ml’s top 10 that are perfectly upstanding and reasonable people, my condolences for the cross-fire....
They are shoveling it down our throats because the corporations want it. The more they can get it to do without having to pay us poors, the more money they can keep in their pockets. AI has to mine data to learn, so they are trying to put it everywhere to learn. On your OS like copilot doesn’t just learn what you type in on a specific site, it learns EVERYTHING you type, everywhere. Then later, Microsoft doesn’t need to pay people writing code for them, doesn’t need to pay customer service reps. Then they can sell either copilot or its learned data to other companies. WE ARE NOT THE CUSTOMERS, WE ARE THE PRODUCT.
ANYHOOO, I have no idea how AI works, I am talking out my ass, but this is my tinfoil hat rant.
I don’t get why you’re being so hostile, when I just asked a question. ‘just google it, bro’ is the refrain of every Monster Energy slinging, tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theorist out there.
I will google project 2025, though I doubt I’ll find anything of value; much like any response to this comment you might make.
Doctors are hailing “off the chart” trial results that show a new drug stopped lung cancer advancing for longer than any other treatment in medical history....
Well that’s a hilarious tinfoil hat theory- that lung-cancer-fighting drugs are financed by Big Tobacco as a way for them to sell more cigarettes.
And honestly, is there anything more late-stage capitalism than “who cares if this activity causes you cancer; you can just take a pill to make it go away!”
-The above post was brought to you by Lucky Strikes, the cigarette that causes the most treatable form of cancer!
Maybe it’s my tinfoil hat that’s getting a bit tight here but…
The Chinese are fighting an obesity epidemic like most of the western world, but they have to import all the GLP-1 drugs from companies outside China. They know this will cost a fortune, just look at the US with Novo’s ozempic/wegovy. But soon Eli Lilly will have a similar product on the market, and that will be the same for China. They’ll have to fork over billions to economic/political adversaries for these drugs, so they want to keep that under control. This is not because they care for anyone’s health and safety.
I’ll start. Maybe one of the LLM/AI companies are trying to bypass newly implemented barrers to training data by using the archive, and it’s totally overwhelming their servers?
Privacy is of course my major concern, hence posting to this community. But not tinfoil hat level.
visibility?
I’m happy to have my stuff indexed by Google, in fact, I want it to be.
AI training?
I’ll take that for 500!
Anybody could’ve copy & pasted your blog also before this AI era.
Plagiarism has been an issue since before Confucius was copied by Baffledus. But the cream still rose to the top. However in this AI era, everything is buried as its all just considered a part of the source data.
Linux Gaming, while increasingly viable, isn’t currently a threat to MS. There are enough reasons people will stick with Windows. But Valve are doing a good job of showing that it’s possible, that Microsoft’s hold on PC gaming isn’t absolute and that an increasing number of games are playable on Linux too (with the right tools). Wine and co. have been around for a while, but they never enjoyed the spotlight of a major videogame platform investing time and manpower into developing a dedicated gaming compatibility engine.
I don’t think MS would intentionally run it into the ground. They’d probably try to squeeze it for money, which might end up doing so anyway.
I also don’t think they’re really worried about Linux gaming. But I also doubt they’d leave Proton untouched entirely. Whether they’d kneecap it, whether they’d enshittify it, whether they’d work on interfacing it with their proprietary stuff in an attempt to put it ahead of any competition and tip potential Linux Gaming developments in favour of using their engine to more easily target both platforms at once, I doubt they could resist doing something to squeeze money from it.
Maybe the very idea that they’re challenging Microsoft’s supremacy is unpleasant to them. Maybe their analytics show enough of a trend to concern them. Maybe they just want to make sure they have a piece of the pie if it ever becomes worth something.
Or maybe the whole thing is baseless bullshit made up for attention and site traffic.
Yes, because he framed his point in one particular emotionally resonant way that just maybe by pure coincidence tends to do more or less nothing at all for the Palestinians except hurt them, and by pure coincidence happens to feed Trump’s chances in the election.
I’ve seen so many tinfoil hat comments from you at this point that I’m sure you must be feeling lonely.
I’m not rooting for a trump presidency. I’m rooting for Biden to stop a genocide, and I believe 1000% Biden will lose on this issue alone if he doesn’t address it.
Seriously, health departments around the world should have offered a fourth Covid certificate during the pandemy - tested, vaccinated, recovered and “will irrevocably forego any right to treatment in a hospital in case of infection”. That way all the tinfoil hats couldn’t have spread their ‘dictatorship’ bullshit nearly as easily, because hey, all you have to do in order to be able to go to the pub is to absolve society of the risk of you catching an absolutely harmless and possibly even imaginary cold.
Let a few thousand of those fuckers die and at the same time keep the hospital beds free for those who need them through no fault of their own. Watch the survivors crap their pants and mumble something about science maybe not being so bad after all.
The problem is that some people consider stupidity to be a virtue. That’s their right (sadly), but they shouldn’t be able to make society suffer the consequences.
This November’s State Legislative Elections Are Key To Protecting the Presidential Election - Democracy Docket
"At The States Project, our work to build power in state legislatures is driven by our understanding of how, in our federal constitutional system, state legislative power is a meaningful and underestimated share of all power in the country to improve lives, protect personal freedom and defend democracy. Fundamental to this is our understanding of the risk that right-wing-controlled state legislatures will subvert a free and fair presidential election. We saw our “tinfoil hat” theories become reality in the wake of the 2020 election, and today, we firmly believe that despite the Moore decision and ECRA, anti-democratic state legislative majorities still pose a clear and present danger." https://www.democracydocket.com/opinion/this-novembers-state-legislative-elections-are-key-to-protecting-the-presidential-election/
What happens when you mandate masks at a conference now that most people no longer wear them but medically vulnerable people are still at risk because #CovidIsNotOver? In the case of #PyConUS, the conference sells out.
Why a masking policy? “Many of us and our fellow community members can’t attend without health and safety guidelines in place. We want PyCon US to be an event that everyone feels safe attending,” organizers explained.
My best guess is that these multiple countries dont want to commit to fighting against the “anti lgbtq movement”.
For Romania, this is exactly the issue. The political situation is pretty crazy, we have a political party called AUR which is the worst reactionary tinfoil hat collection of crazies, very reminiscent of extreme US republicans. They are currently a fringe party, but growing. The mainstream socially conservative party (PSD, a socialist party… long story) don’t want to lose voters to the crazies, so they have to portray themselves as anti-LGBT. An alliance of socially progressive and economically liberal parties (PNL, USR+) is currently in power, and want to concentrate on how amazing the economy is and freeze social issues because they’re too divisive to win elections on.
The asymmetrical internet speeds are intended to keep hobbyists and small businesses from self-hosting, thereby driving traffic to larger companies. I wonder if ISPs get any kind of kickback from large companies like AWS, cloudflare, or digital ocean. Like, reduced hosting costs for their websites and internal cloud services.
Takes tinfoil hat off
The reality is that it’s probably a lot cheaper for ISPs to make connections asymmetrical because it effectively lets them pump up their download speed numbers for free. However, ISPs really should give customers the option to custom allocate bandwidth. Instead of saying X upload, Y download, you get X Mbps maximum and can choose the upload/download split.

Better get your tinfoil hat then. What @davidgro says is right, your fantasy ideas are just that. Sure, in coming centuries this tech might be possible to be miniaturised and read externally, but for now that’s not even close to possible.
