My bets are on EPP+S&D+Greens. No fundamental policy shift, Renew will support the coalition at least in part, maybe even become part of it. ECR and ID really are too diverse to properly gauge policy-wise. Really, business as usual: A centre-centre-centre coalition.

Btw there’s a majority calculator

barsoap,

Can we take a moment to consider that everything is the fault of the Italians. The Italians, and only the Italians:

Why the hell are your polling stations open until 23:00? Who the hell votes at that time? Is it one of those “not cappuccino after 11 – no voting before dusk” kind of superstitions? You’re the reason we don’t have proper projections yet!

barsoap,

I blame it on the greens for not fielding Habeck as chancellor candidate. I’m probably going to be salty about that one for the next 40 years.

barsoap, (edited )

We’re already done counting. They’re actively not updating the results because the Italians can’t be bothered to vote during daytime. On a Sunday.

EDIT: State results are in. Well, almost completely.

barsoap,

Then vote after your morning espresso!

Or like me: Go to vote whenever, visit the Italian ice cream parlour on the way back.

We could’ve had a Green-Red or at least Red-Green government is what I mean.

…but, no, the Greens said “there’s no female chancellor candidate, there must be one, therefore we will field a politician who’s at least two magnitudes less electable” – and that after no less than 16 years of Merkel. As if anything had to be proven on that front. As if self-congratulatory symbol politics would ever have gotten us anywhere.

barsoap,

The second operation, carried out by the internet access providers at Hadopi’s request, consists, inter alia, of matching the IP address with the civil identity data of its holder.

Which just opens more questions: How long are ISPs allowed/required to store customer IPs, and then what happens if I have an open wifi: Can they just assume that I did it or declare me responsible anyway, that is, is it possible for a private individual to enjoy ISP privileges?

Two neighbors were fighting over a financial dispute. They couldn’t reach an agreement, so they took their case to the local rabbi. The rabbi heard the first litigant’s case, nodded his head and said, “You’re right.”

The second litigant then stated his case. The rabbi heard him out, nodded again and said, “You’re also right.”

The rabbi’s attendant, who had been standing by this whole time, was justifiably confused. “But, rebbe,” he asked, “how can they both be right?”

The rav thought about this for a moment before responding, “You’re right, too!”

barsoap,

Instead of moving along the digits from highest to lowest, as in “Four hundreds and two tens and nine”, we do “Four hundred and nine and two tens”.

English is less consistent, going from nine-teen to twenty-one. German stays consistent with its lower two digits.

barsoap,

They’ll be forced to accept it, at least in the EU, they will also need to enable you to resell your games. EU law on this is clear, rulings in other cases are clear, all we’re waiting for is for Valve to stop appealing or lose before the ECJ, whatever is first.

The tl;dr is if they want to argue that they’re simply renting out licenses then they shouldn’t be taking one-time but regular payments, or only give out time-limited licenses for one-time payments, or some such. They should also avoid terms such as “buy” and “summer sale” like the plague.

barsoap,

With a physical good you’re transferring ownership of that “thing”,

A use-right is also a thing that can be sold and for which stuff like the first sale doctrine applies. Possession and property of the use right is all yours, even if it does not include the right to make additional copies, that is, to sublicense.

At least that’s how it works over here, always has. You can get perfectly valid Windows Pro keys here on the cheap, there’s a small cottage industry buying up volume licenses at bankruptcy proceedings and the like and unbundling them. If Microsoft can’t stop that then Valve won’t, either.

barsoap,

In the US not all licenses are transferable, and that includes things like “accounts”.

That’s maybe a service that you can’t transfer but it’s still holding property of the account holder. More like escrow.

As to lawyers, well, they aren’t hiring lawyers to follow the intent of the law but to write terms that they think they might get away with, at least for a while, and if not, not be nailed for fraud or such. Corporate lawyers are just as slimy in the EU as they are elsewhere.

barsoap,

He’s a judge by profession, btw. Any law weasel’s worst nightmare.

barsoap,

Unsuuuure if Linux is compatible with the graphic/music production software I’m working with, or if there are viable work arounds.

I have no idea about music production but ardour is linux-native and the technical backend stuff is definitely there (you’ll want to use jack in real-time mode to hook everything up and together). Graphics-wise if you can do what you want to do with blender and/or krita you’re also set. You’ll be able to sync up blender and ardour via jack. Dunno about video editing blender has always been sufficient for me and I already know it. There’s also plenty of more coding-oriented music stuff, have some live-coded music.

barsoap,

Dogs are way more intelligent than that. LLM tech is basically a way to quickly breed fruit flies to fly right or left when they see a particular pattern.

barsoap,

The false positive problem actually works in favour of the dogs, here: Their noses are excellent they know exactly whether there’s drugs there or not. They also know that the humans can’t tell so it’s easy to get a treat regardless. And they also know to not overdo it.

Even more complicated are cats, figures that they are by and large uninterested in being studied or proving anything to you.

barsoap,

Because allow/blocklist are just as old if not even older and are way clearer terminology.

“white” and “black” there are metaphors, the “master” in git branches and SCSI isn’t.

See at some point you have to ask yourself the question whether you’d be opposed to the change if blue-haired college students really into performative politics weren’t a thing. Imagine the idea coming from your slightly computer-illiterate 60yold shop floor boss saying “I don’t want to think about the terms here, I want to do CAD/CAM. Speak English, whippersnapper”.

barsoap,

Actually, the massacre wasn’t happening on Tiananmen Square, but next to it.

That one’s true. There’s probably been some deaths on the square itself but the bulk was in side-streets blocked by Peking locals in solidarity with the students, once the army fought itself through that and arrived at the square it issued an ultimatum and the students caved. Eleven of the withdrawing students were later killed away from the square by a stray tank crew. The tank man picture was taken the day after.

Don’t get into fights with tankies over such things. Rather ask why the CCP was stomping Dengists – which is what the students were.

Salman Rushdie’s alleged assailant seeks plea deal with US (www.semafor.com)

Hadi Matar, the man accused of nearly fatally stabbing British-American writer Salman Rushdie, is negotiating a plea agreement with both US state and federal prosecutors that could shed light on whether a foreign government or terrorist organization was involved in the attack, officials involved in the case told Semafor....

barsoap,

From what I heard dishing out death sentences without trial is a big no-no in Islamic law and the Ayatollah essentially made himself a heretic doing that.

barsoap,

The trough of disillusionment is definitely already there in academia but the market forces that be override that with massive amounts of hype, silicon, and YOLO. Billionaire capital and attitude can provide that, it can’t provide basic research, because velocity is valued way higher than going anywhere sensible.

barsoap,

Half the reason why I bought an RTX GPU was for the video enhancement features like SDR to HDR conversion and AI upscaling

Neither of those things have anything to do with raytracing. Well the tensor cores used for denoising in RT workloads are suitable for all kinds of AI workloads and thus also upscaling, but really it hasn’t got to do anything with raytracing. Or AI in particular any GPU can do convolutions.

I don’t own an nvidia card and honestly few linux users do because their driver support sucks, I’d say if nvidia advertised those features and their linux drivers don’t have them your complaints should be directed at nvidia. They won’t care.

Meanwhile, mpv does inverse tone mapping natively. They don’t integrate AI upscaling but there’s various projects providing glsl shaders which mpv can use, here’s the configs for Anime4K. There’s also frame interpolation around somewhere but I haven’t used it in ages because variable refresh rate is the best solution to odd frame rates.

Development of X halted, the few patches that are still landing concern xwayland, don’t expect anything to happen there. KDE 6.0 ships with experimental HDR support on wayland, you might not need to wait five years go give a live USB stick a spin. Arch wiki has some pointers (not that I’d be recommending arch but I am recommending their wiki).
