Are you susceptible to believing propaganda? Please explain your answer and reasoning.

cestith,

@BlackAzizAnansi everyone is susceptible. I think I'm less susceptible than many because I'm a reasonably intelligent person who was taught in school both skeptical inquiry and media literacy including spotting propaganda and marketing/sales tactics.

Media literacy, scientific methods, and just a touch of psychology and sociology hours a long way. It's no wonder so many powers that be and that want to be hate humanities education.

xurble,

@BlackAzizAnansi every now and again I run into something I took at face value and that gets debunked. It’s always something I wanted to be true. Makes me wonder how often I get the lie and not the debunking.

@BlackAzizAnansi Can confirm even the smartest, most left-leaning people I know are falling victim to some wild AF propaganda — to the point of looking as foolish as facebook Boomers — right now. And I just sit back like…"oy." Because there's nothing else to say.

I've even fallen for one or two things lately because a lot of these lies are convincing specifically because of their grain of truth.

@BlackAzizAnansi Because my parents weren't that great, I learned to question everything early. Still do. Probably when I shouldn't either.

@ang6666 @BlackAzizAnansi

Good propaganda will use your distrust in authority as a way to influence your thinking.

I also question everything, but I’m sure I’m influenced towards my biases by well written propaganda.

I counter it as best I can, but there is no way to check every source, or understand every topic well enough to counter it completely.

moondog548,

@aintist

Indeed. I've come to believe that it's essential for us as people and a society to DELIBERATELY build robust, reliable ways of dealing with or circumventing this unavoidable degree of uncertainty into our systems of behavior/government.

@moondog548 @aintist @BlackAzizAnansi I raised my boys to question everything. Was annoying when they questioned me, but forced me to think and explain decisions with them. This is needed more.

JTS,

@BlackAzizAnansi

Yeah, everyone is. Propaganda is powerful.

@BlackAzizAnansi a history Professor once said to me that Goebbels believed “propaganda was the art of telling people what they secretly wanted to hear, but would never admit in mixed company .”

@BlackAzizAnansi Like the saying goes,
You can fool all of the people some of the time
You can fool some of the people all of the time
But you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.

So be aware that some of the time all the people can be fooled. Stay humble, question authority, support the powerless, and keep an open mind.

@BlackAzizAnansi I am very pleased by the results of this poll overall.

@BlackAzizAnansi anybody is really, i can resist by being completely detached from "reality" though, i figure. of course that is no security though. there is no security

@BlackAzizAnansi the “propaganda” I’m susceptible to is anything put out by the source I’ve deemed as trustworthy (Democracy Now). I trust them so much that I don’t really question the reporting. So it’s very possible that I believe things that aren’t true because I don’t question them.

I'm prone to manipulation because due to various unpleasant reasons, I've struggled with developing a sense of self.

Not knowing yourself leaves you vulnerable to a lot of ugly shit.

@BlackAzizAnansi
This is a fascinating topic for many reasons. Most people can't even easily question or self-examine the day to day assumptions of their own opinions.
More people need to read books like "Prometheus Rising" by Robert Anto Wilson, as dated as they may be.

@BlackAzizAnansi I'm afraid we all take the bait when someone either confirms our prejudices or tells us what we want to hear. It takes an effort to think things thru and many of us either never learned how or just don't have the fucking energy anymore. Kudos to those who keep trying...

jonahgibberish,

@BlackAzizAnansi no one is immune to propaganda because it plays on your emotions and your biases, your best defense against it is self reflection and awareness of your emotions and biases so you can notice when they are being poked.

DataDrivenMD,

@BlackAzizAnansi I'm human, and propaganda works on all humans. So, yes, I am susceptible

@BlackAzizAnansi when I was younger I kept hearing scare stories of the national debt. "Your family owes $40k" or whatever. Never occurred to me to question it so I'd parrot that propaganda if asked. After thinking about it some more I did some research and found out about #MMT and found out what fed deficits really are. I'm sure there's other propaganda affecting me the same way but at least I can recognize that I'm susceptible.

rgulick,

@BlackAzizAnansi
Anyone who says they're not susceptible has very little self awareness.

@BlackAzizAnansi

I am a veteran HS social studies / political science teacher . . . I spend almost every day mired in it - trying to teach POV & how to recognize it. Am overly sensitive at this point.

Definitely susceptible to Adverts for better skin & hair tho 😅

CodieneC,

@BlackAzizAnansi Not generally, have always been a 'why' person - used to drive my parents crazy. The town/school librarians loved me.

I come from generations of struggle as a chileno palestino living in Sweden. The last hundred years or so have been, and seen, displacement. The propaganda, however, is the same.

@BlackAzizAnansi You can work to resist propaganda by critical analysis, awareness of biases, and humility, but I don’t think anyone can be immune; there aren’t enough hours in the day to function with maximal skepticism at all times.

@BlackAzizAnansi everyone is susceptible, we all have our biases and assumptions that can be exploited. Especially with the way communication just IS now adays, you have to be very active in scrutinizing everything and we'll all inevitably fail at that every once in a while. It's an impossible task to hyper analyze everything.

Best we can do is keep ourselves open to new ideas and don't immediately dismiss something that goes against what you expect to be true about the world.

zakatak,

@BlackAzizAnansi as long as others are willing to abuse my trust for their own gains, I am susceptible to propaganda.

@BlackAzizAnansi almost everyone is to one degree or another. That's why it keeps working. I'm not immune, but I like to think that I can at least notice when it's happening and adjust my reasoning. Most of the time.

davidfetter,

@BlackAzizAnansi people who say they're not are lying or completely misunderstand how propaganda works.

tom,
@tom@labyrinth.social avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi Nobody is completely immune to propaganda, it's ridiculous to think that you are. And even if you are a being with a magical brain that is immune to every currently known propaganda technique there is always a chance that someone will invent a powerful new technique tomorrow that works on you
