Edit: the "centerpiece" part might have come from It's FOSS News, although Nextcloud messaging around AI is similarly excited.

@rysiek @tfiebig @nextcloud Tobias is correct. Nextcloud isn't an AI company, we don't have our own LLMs. First, all AI features can be disabled because some folks don't like AI. Second, you can bring your own model now with Nextcloud Hub 8, or even integrate with OpenAI API. It's really up to you what flavor of AI you prefer to use. Your data, your choice.

I've spent a good majority of the day moving 750GB of files out of my Google Drive over to my @protonprivacy drive.

I've quit using Google Chrome(long long time ago).
I've quit using Gmail.
I've quit using Google Drive.
I've quit using Google Keep.

The one thing that is just too damn good to quit using that Google makes is Google Photos.

While there are replacements, there's nothing that comes even remotely close to being as good as Google Photos in my opinion. Literally NOTHING!

@joostruis @cliffwade @philipdrobar While Nextcloud Photos doesn't do everything Google Photos does, Nextcloud Memories app comes really close. Most people migrating from Google Photos to Nextcloud use Memories app.

@cliffwade @joostruis @philipdrobar Yes, if you're not looking to self-host it might not be right. There are managed providers such as Hetzner, Hosting.de, Good Cloud, Tab Digital, and others. They manage it, so you don't have to do anything.

My family recently noticed that the sound quality of the jitsi instance we are using dropped dramatically on weaker devices, and now they want to switch to some different conferencing software. Anyone know what might have caused this (within the last couple of weeks)? Some update that fiddled with encoding? I don’t wanna have to install zoom. :blobfoxcry2:

@timorl @vibudanimsara Nextcloud is self-hosted. If you need a Jitsi replacement only, Nextcloud Talk is probably not it. It's part of the Nextcloud Hub collaboration suite. There are no servers or accounts offered by Nextcloud. Only software. So if you need Dropbox replacement, or Google Drive, in addition to Jitsi - then Nextcloud is perfect.

People always complain is slow or doesn't work. It's not Nextcloud 😃

If it can handle

  • 2.2 million active users
  • Store 3.5 billion files
  • Totaling 7.2 petabytes of data

It can handle your or business needs just fine if set up correctly without network issues 😉

I'm still confused by the @nextcloud ecosystem and development. At first blush it seems mature and stable, but then I find weird / obvious UI issues (items from Tasks only show on the monthly calendar view). They seem to be investing in AI integrations, but ignoring unbelievably large client-side JS downloads or the aforementioned basic UI feature completion.

I get it isn’t enterprise software and is OSS, so that’s fine. But it feels scattershot. What am I missing?

@mez @nextcloud Every software has bugs. Bugs are constantly being worked on and fixed. Client-side code is going through a rewrite using Vue.js. The latest Hub 7 (v28) included Files app rewritten in Vue.js, which saw performance improvements. Nextcloud is complex. One bug may require 3 different developers to fix it - frontend, backend, and desktop. Sometimes even Android or iOS developers.

It would help if more folks tested RC releases to catch bugs. Bugs will get fixed, just takes time.

    @weirdwriter where's your instance hosted? Unfortunately I don't have enough experience managing Nextcloud. I don't even manage my own, and let Hetzner do it with their storage share product.

    Thinking of migrating to iCloud for my only cloud storage. But how the heck can someone share a file or folder with someone, without forcing them to have an Apple ID?

    Sticking with Sync and Dropbox for now I guess.

    @outofcontrol @michael Hetzner's Storage Share, which is a managed Nextcloud service, is only €5/mo/1TB. That's what I use. Reliable. Has backups.

    @outofcontrol @michael With Hetzner's service, it's managed. So you don't get any server access. Which includes FTP. It's sort of like Dropbox. There's Hetzner's console to do things, Nextcloud web UI, and clients/apps.

    @cliffwade quick question about Nova. Am I correctly seeing that if you use swipe up/down and double tap gestures, you can't really use double tap + swipe up/down gestures? Thanks.

    @cliffwade That's what I thought. But if I have double tap set, before I can manage to do double tap + swipe, double tap will initiate. So swipe isn't registering.

    @cliffwade I got it to work. I think the problem is how it's described vs how it actually works. It's not double tap + swipe, it's technically 1 tap + swipe. The second tap is actually a swipe. At least that's how it looks to me now that I got it to work.

    My on install* turns 10 years old this year.

    • It was migrated from ownCloud to Nextcloud and both Nextcloud and the OS have been kept regularly upgraded to supported versions throughout that time.
