My on install* turns 10 years old this year.

  • It was migrated from ownCloud to Nextcloud and both Nextcloud and the OS have been kept regularly upgraded to supported versions throughout that time.
brmassa,

@vwbusguy Mine are a bit older but about the same age (10y). However they migrated (and some other apps immediately reinstalled) to other servers

@vwbusguy I'm curious, what was the reason you switched from ownCloud to Nextcloud back then? 😃

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@viktor ownCloud didn't exist yet when I first deployed it. I actually met some devs from Germany and hearing the story of the split from them was what convinced me to migrate. I love their dedication to .

@vwbusguy oh nice. That was the right move. They recently got acquired by Kiteworks, and now Kiteworks offers a deal to switch to them 😂 saying users will get enhanced security by switching from ownCloud. They don't even believe what they bought is secure. I also recently learned their new OCIS version has EULA, making it source-available not open source 🤦‍♂️

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@viktor The only thing surprising to me about any of this is that ownCloud has managed to survive as long as it has

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@viktor We got contacted by our CISO office a month or so ago because they were concerned about some nasty vulnerability in ownCloud and assumed our nextcloud instance would be vulnerable as well, but it wasn't affected. We also showed them the external scanner report for our instance. I'm confident we made the right choice in picking Nextcloud.

viktor,
@viktor@me.dm avatar

@vwbusguy That's good to hear. A lot of people were asking on social media if ownCloud vulnerabilities affected Nextcloud. It sounds like you're using Nextcloud at work? File sharing or full collaboration suite?

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@viktor At work, for filesharing and not as much as I'd hoped yet. Everyone hates Box but no one has bandwidth to try to learn an alternative (yet). I'm hopeful that will eventually change and we'll be ready with an environment on standby.

At home, I'm using it for all sorts of stuff.

viktor,
@viktor@me.dm avatar

@vwbusguy Makes sense. Is it free community edition you're running at work?

You said "no one has bandwidth to try to learn an alternative" - is there anything Nextcloud can do to make this easier? UI changes, educational resources, etc.

My sole purpose at Nextcloud is to increase adoption in North America, so I'm all ears for any feedback 🙂

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@viktor Yes, currently running the free version on AlmaLinux via Caddy and Collabora CODE. I set it up as a proof of concept, so if we actually adopt it, we would almost certainly buy support and run it in a more scalable way (something both of us wish would happen, I'm sure).

Unfortunately, it's probably a matter of Box just being ever so slightly more annoying in some way or raising prices at this point rather than anything nextcloud can do at the moment.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@viktor Spite for a vendor who overpromises and under delivers often provides the motivation necessary for significant platform change, so the best thing Nextcloud can do, IMO, is to largely do as it is already doing by building good faith with customers and open source communities. There's a good reason why you're on our radar in a space with dozens of big name alternatives.

viktor,
@viktor@me.dm avatar

@vwbusguy Thanks for the valuable feedback! I appreciate it. Box was a little short on revenue last year, missing expectations. Wouldn't be surprised if they increased the price to make up.

I'm curious, where do you host stuff at work? AWS, Google, another cloud provider, or local data center?

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@viktor Yes to all of the above :-) .

The Nextcloud instance itself was recently migrated to Rancher Harvester which is running bare-metal on prem.

viktor,
@viktor@me.dm avatar

@vwbusguy That's an interesting setup. I've seen Rancher, but haven't seen Harvester. Does this setup allow for better scaling? Is this also why you chose Caddy?

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@viktor Harvester just gave me a place internally to run it. It's currently setup as a POC but not for scale. We would probably re-deploy via the helm chart using an HPA if we got to that point.

We use apache (httpd), nginx, and caddy generally. I've tended to use caddy for the built-in autohttps and simplicity when it's been practical. If we ported to kubernetes, we'd either be using traefik or nginx ingress behind ha_proxy. (My home Nextcloud runs on apache.)

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@viktor Harvester is essentially libvirt running on Rancher (via kubevirt), so it's Rancher for VMs (that you can also run Rancher on.)

andrewj720,

@vwbusguy Nice, I'm 3 years in with Nextcloud on a VPS (Linode, now Akamai) and about to move to on-prem shortly as the storage costs have got too much on the cloud. Looking forward to some Docker and Tailscale fun, and really need to migrate the venerable MythTV to this new box, in its own container too. This is all new to me as previously I have always just spun up a cheap VPS each time I want to try a new service. Containers are a whole new world to me - should be fun!

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@andrewj720 I use Nextcloud as a backend for kodi. I created a kodi user and then shared mine and my wife's photos, videos, and music read-only to it and then nextcloud scrapes and serves it all over webdavs from a raspberry pi.
