Gentle suggestion for #OpenSource and #FOSS projects whose first response to criticism is "oPeN a pUlL rEQuEsT."

Stop. It's a deeply unhelpful comment because a) it shifts the responsibility for primary development from the core team to a stranger, and b) literally everyone who would be in a position to open a PR already is aware that's an option.

So instead:

  1. Recognize that valid criticism of user experience and functionality can come from non-developers.
  2. Usually, people comment on issues because they want your app to work for them. They're on your side.
  3. You are not just developers; you are project maintainers and part of that is interacting with a community. Leading with gratitude and empathy goes a long way to building and maintaining that community.

Something like thanking them for caring, asking for what they'd like to see, and inviting them to be part of the solution with an easy onboarding process is much more likely to succeed.

@mttaggart Open source maintainers don't have time for pleasantries. Brevity ≠ rudeness. If they tell you to open a pull request, that's an invitation to contribute to the project. They see your suggestion is worthy of the PR, otherwise they would reject it and close the issue. UX is not an #opensource priority when you have limited time. Squashing bugs is, followed by new features. If you can't open PR, offer to donate to fund development. Remember, every contributor was a stranger once.

@evan I don't trust my own pace. It includes sleepless nights binge-watching the show 😒😭🤣 Just finished original Dexter.

Alright, here’s my entry for the worst (to the point of being funny) cold message I’ve ever gotten:

@mariyadelano If they can't book you for their own business, they can't book clients for yours 🤣 I mark them as spam to teach them a lesson, especially if it comes from a Gmail account.

After social media gets decentralized, I hope web search gets decentralized.

Google shouldn’t be dominating web search.

viktor,
@viktor@me.dm avatar

@atomicpoet I think it would be better if search engines used the same search index but provide their own flavor of algorithm and search features. Let a non-profit such as Internet Archive handle the crawling and indexing, and provide it for a fee for commercial usage to pay infrastructure costs and free for non-commercial use. If search giants pooled resources, index would be much bigger and of higher quality. Sort of like Chromium powering Chrome, Brave, Edge, etc.

I just asked Jay Graber, CEO of , three questions:

  1. How much will it cost to operate a BGS?

  2. Will AT protocol have applications beyond microblogging?

  3. In your estimation, how much of the network will be PDS-to-PDS communication?

I hope she answers.

viktor,
@viktor@me.dm avatar

@atomicpoet @ekana How does it compare with Matrix? If they can create custom lexicons, instant messaging would be possible too. I remember reading that Matrix didn't meet their needs when they were evaluating protocols before building ADX, which became AT protocol now.

is finally testing federation with "allow-listed servers".

They're finally taking the step of decentralization.

Many people will naysay this. But it's absolutely better that they move to decentralization than not do it.

viktor,
@viktor@me.dm avatar

@atomicpoet Thanks for breaking it down. Basically, BlueSky miniaturized how the internet works 🤣 PDS = PC, BGS = Google, App View = Google's search algorithm. Nothing new, technically.

I am about ready to throw my laptop through a window. Something on my machine is grabbing hold of the mouse, stealing focus, and moving the cursor to the bottom right of my main display. I’ve rebooted, shut down as many apps as I can, and can’t find the culprit. Posting from
my phone because I literally can’t give my desktop Masto client focus for long enough to post a coherent sentence.

Any ideas on how to track this one down?

viktor,
@viktor@me.dm avatar

@freakboy3742 If Windows, go to Device Manager, find you mouse and uninstall the drive. Restart. Once it restarts, it will reinstall the drive. Usually fixes a lot of problems.

    @jeff Open Collective is amazing, especially if you can be an independent collective. So it's technically free, only optional tip users can leave.

    Is there an easy way that I can transfer my 2FA codes out of Authy and into iCloud Keychain?

    #Authy #Keychain #2FA #InfoSec

    viktor,
    @viktor@me.dm avatar

    @kylewritescode Authy doesn't allow exporting or importing of auth codes. I had to move them manually to 1Password.

    viktor,
    @viktor@me.dm avatar

    @cliffwade @kylewritescode Yes, they claim it's security related. But if password managers allow import/export, Authy can too. Unless the real reason is to prevent users from switching.
