I have a theory that the men who reply to posts with some version of "not all men" do so because they see some of themselves in whatever statement was made and they don't like it.

@fosstastic As a guy, I don't have a problem with the original statement at all. It strikes me as accurate, or at the very least an accurate reflection of the relative power that men and women hold in society.

In addition, drawing an analogy between making claims about men and, say, immigrants is false - again, because of power. Making a statement about immigrants, members of many other religions, etc., in the US at least, is making claims about relatively disempowered groups. That kind of punching down is unacceptable. But someone from a disempowered group making a statement about those who - and I'm gonna use a word here and mean it - are the oppressors seems not unreasonable. It might seem unfair, but if women are saying things about how they perceive men in this society to be, it makes more sense for us to listen than to be offended.

In a perfect world, everyone would be treated with equal respect and would get equal opportunities. We don't live in that world, and sure, being respectful and kind is important. But getting mad because someone with less power than men says something about all men? Nah. Not worth responding, but maybe it is worth considering one's own behavior. Which is hard, at least for me. YMMV.

@ryanhoulihan Sort of relevant, maybe, but I wish we did a better job teaching history. That way more people would understand how folks dealt with civilizational collapses in their own times and places. And maybe learn some damn empathy in the process.

    @imalcolm @flockofnazguls Fair, although I would argue that the true wire recording aficionado has an electron microscope in his (yes, HIS) basement/parent's basement/he's gonna get a real job someday, he's just waiting for the right opportunity/garage/mancave to be able to properly visualize the magnetic domains corresponding to the different sounds played.
