i’m reading a lot of conflicting info about using on for

speficially about

some guides suggest using detailed descriptions of the person, including background and setting

others suggest too much info isn't helpful and that it's better to simply use the person's name

i’ve been doing the former, but it's problematic describing other people's physical appearance

wondering if there are any resources BY people that may be more helpful than the general sites

i am NOT asking about alt text in general. just headshots

i hate asking for boosts, but this time it would be appreciated

Whew! I finished.

https://terikanefield.com/invented-narratives-and-the-outrage-industry/

Everything I promised: How to listen (or not listen) to legal pundits.

It's also about what is dangerous about the entire industry of punditry, speculation, and cable talk shows.

For years I was perplexed by what I was seeing on left-leaning Twitter, political blogs, and partisan reporting. I had the feeling that, in its way, what I was seeing was comparable to Fox: Lots of bad information and even unhinged conspiracy theories.

@Teri_Kanefield

i like this series of articles, and i somewhat agree with the thesis

but, despite the long list of 'consequences,' Trump is still criming all over the place while also being treated as a legitimate candidate for the presidency. this sure looks like the consequences he's had to face aren't significant or enough

paying fines isn't consequential to people with lost of money or rich backers

shutting down a Trump organization isn't consequential when he can keep on criming through many other channels

this is in stark contrast with how the legal systems treats working class crime, or poverty crime. jails and prisons are full of people whose crimes pale in comparison to the many, rich white men who are institutionally and societally protected when they cheat, lie, steal, and otherwise cause widespread harm

so, overall, the outrage over political and corporate crime is rational and reasonable

Facts republicans hide from Americans.
"#Ukraine" funding actually includes over $50 billion that is spent in the USA for jobs and increase production, creating manufacturing jobs. These maps depict just a portion of that sum, and do not reflect either total defense spending by state, or the total amount spent on procurement & investment since Feb 2022.

The top recipient states:

  1. Arkansas - $2.344 billion
  2. Arizona - $2.076 billion
  3. Pennsylvania - $1.978 billion
  4. California - $1.527 billion
  5. Texas - $1.478 billion
  6. Florida - $1.114 billion
  7. Alabama - $945 million
  8. West Virginia - $932 million
  9. Massachusetts - $876 million
  10. Ohio - $808 million

The top per capita recipient states are:

  1. Arkansas - $770
  2. West Virginia - $525
  3. Arizona - $282
  4. Iowa - $239
  5. Alabama - $186
  6. New Hampshire - $161
  7. Pennsylvania - $152
  8. Massachusetts - $125
  9. Mississippi - $115
  10. Missouri - $113

Arkansas taking the top spot on both lists.

After 9/11, those assertions became accepted, foundational pillars of a War on Terror permitting four presidents to bomb, for 20 years, Pakistanis, Yemenis, Somalis, Libyans, Syrians, and others"

I just got mad on #Substack Notes. This is not a good sign 😂

I think this article captures what I have feeling lately about the damn place.

Notes has made the place more competitive, cliquish and social media-ish.

But what made me 🔥 is when established writers lecture me about how I should think or behave as a writer "to be successful".

I hate condescending remarks.

substack's feature set is great and it would be a useful service for me to promote my tiny lit journal, but even more important than that, to create a community of contributors and readers. i used it for several months

but the company has done so many awful things, and because so many awful people use it, i quit

i tried Ghost for a while but it's too much work, and lacks a lot of features, and it's expensive for my budget

now trying a Wordpress Plugin, The Newsletter, which seems really great, but very complex and doesn't integrate with user comments

i miss substack, and wish there was something like it run by nicer people

patamystic,
@patamystic@sfba.social avatar

@liztai @clive

sorry for that. just based on this one comment (the longer one linked to), you seem really smart, thoughtful, and considerate. it boggles the mind that some people find that threatening

patamystic,
@patamystic@sfba.social avatar

@clive @liztai

yeah, i think you're right. what i like most about substack is that it includes mechanisms that can help with discovery, but the cost of those mechanisms is too high, and I don't mean monetarily

for years we've been seduced by the promise of discoverability and reach by social media, when the reality is we walked willingly into their algorithmic traps where we then become harvested as data. crude analogy, i know

it felt like i gave something up (discoverability) when moving from substack to ghost, but now am coming to accept that discoverability was/is a chimera. the power imbalance between big tech money and end users will never be fair

another crude analogy that comes to mind is staying in an abusive relationship through gaslighting. it's never worth it

With BlueSky moving towards finally opening up federation, I'm interested in how people feel about it?

Would you be open to the idea of Mastodon, Lemmy, Pixelfed, and other Fediverse platforms adopting the AT protocol in order to federate with it?

If those technical hurdles could be overcome, would you support your instance federating with BlueSky?

Does the same go for other commercially-owned platforms, such as Threads and Tumblr?

Number of #LongCOVID Cases Could Be Vastly Underestimated

“new research suggests that may be an underestimate and that far more people may be suffering from long #COVID without ever having tested positive for the virus. Researchers found a significant proportion of patients in their small study who had never tested positive for COVID-19 but who were having symptoms of long COVID nevertheless showed evidence of immune responses consistent with previous exposure.”
