I've been thinking of how to express what I think about the Burning Man situation, but this guy just did it perfectly.

Fuck Burning Man.

Nuclear took 20 years to reach 200GW, at a huge cost, causing several terrible accidents and producing a toxic waste that needs to be guarded for thousands of years.

Wind and solar reached 200GW in half the time for a fraction of the cost and without significant incidents.

People say "carbon capture is necessary" - it's not.

It's a pipe dream. A distraction cooked up by the fossil fuel lobby.

What we need is to stop burning fossil fuels.

When oil and gas industrialists say that phasing out fossil fuels would lead to chaos, it's not a warning but a threat.

I just spent my friday night painting the most depressing picture I could.

The story of how obscenely powerful elites killed the planet for profit, knowingly.

Global Warming was a headline topic in the New York Times by 1988.

There were plenty of warnings and calls to stop increasing emissions. But they just kept increasing.

They kept increasing after the 1995 IPCC report concluded that the only way to meet the goal of the Kyoto Protocol was an IMMEDIATE reduction in emissions of 50-70%.

"Why don't you like it?"

"WHAT? I CAN'T HEAR YOU"

I think people seem surprised sometimes when I tell them I don't like it here.

Sometimes I find it hard to articulate what's so unpleasant about living here.

But this transportation noise map gives a pretty good idea.

Cars, trains and airplanes cause constantly high levels of noise in this area.

It's deafening, and maddening.

Ooh, this looks nice.

"Terra Nil" seems to be a new take on city-building games, in which instead of building a city you have to re-vegetate a wasteland.

The art is nice. It feels very "solarpunk" - though "windpunk" might be more accurate, haven't seen any solar panels here.

I'm gonna check it out.

The US government publishes a yearly list of online and physical marketplaces specialized in trading pirated and counterfeit goods, which is... convenient, so you can avoid them.

This list includes Sci-Hub, Cuevana and Greenhills Shopping Center in Manila, which is pretty eclectic.

It's very sad and insane that young people are saddled with so much debt from colleges/unis that do the opposite of expanding their minds.

mzedp,
@mzedp@mas.to avatar

@PeachMcD @StillIRise1963 Yeah, that's the problem. People don't realize that what's stupid is this system where studying is an obscene financial burden. It shouldn't be. It wasn't. It isn't anywhere else. It's LITERALLY just here.

It's a running gag in Spain that every other person has an art history degree that is professionally useless - but it doesn't saddle them with perpetual debt.

Seeing a Stanford lecture - the professor jokes about a student being on their fourth try at passing the course.

This is not uncommon. Failing and repeating courses is a part of learning. I know I failed a few.

mzedp,
@mzedp@mas.to avatar

But in a country where university education is so prohibitively expensive as to be out of reach of most people, it's a clear display of the extreme privilege some have.

For some failing a course will mean losing their position and opportunity to reach some level of prosperity.

For others it's a non-issue.

It should not be this way.

We should all have the same freedom.

Ciudad de Mexico is a massive city.

At 20 some million inhabitants in its metro area, it's by far the most populous city I've ever been to.

As I was landing, looking down into the winding streets of the city, I got the feeling that this was a place one could get lost in and never found again.

That intimidated me a bit.

So, getting blackout drunk on mezcal during a business dinner and wandering out in the streets was probably not a good idea.

Anyways - I just found out I'll have to go to Shanghai next month for a work event and it turns out it's twice as populous as CDMX, so that should be an interesting experience.

On a related note - anyone got recommendations for what to do when visiting Shanghai for the first time?

mzedp,
@mzedp@mas.to avatar

@BrianZiman There shouldn't be ads in any subscription streaming service. In fact, fuck all ads and the entire profession of marketing. I consider it abusive to shove unwanted information into my head. Like all people I have limited brain capacity and I go out of my way to use it as best I can - and remembereing a bunch of slogans, jingles, and names I have no interest in, just because someone figured out some neat trick in human psychology, is not it.
