@mybarkingdogs@tech.lgbt

He/him, antifascist non-auth internationalist leftist (at this point not necessarily sure what tradition/party/etc I fall into, all I know is I dislike dictators and capitalists alike), I'm a writer and artist, looking to get back into doing electronic music production.

Advisory: my content heavily leans toward #news, #politics, #weather, #disasters, history, etc, and I often interact with people off instance. If any of this is bothersome, PLEASE mute/block me or filter boosts/words.

AI advisory: I occasionally play with AI, ML, and GAN tools for entertainment/humor/inspiration purposes ONLY, and I occasionally use automated actions in design projects. Any AI/ML/GAN created text or imagery will be clearly tagged and CWed as such, as will any use of automated actions (background removal/change, etc) in creating/editing anything original.

Are you finding Mastodon to be less vibrant/active?

I’m worried that we are not getting as much engagement on our Ukraine war reporting as we used to.

We’re trying to decide which social media platforms to continue posting on, given how much effort it takes to replicate across all of them.

If you want to send a signal to us that we should keep posting here, will you sign up for our newsletter? http://Counteroffensive.substack.com

I’m only asking Mastodon users today so we can gauge impact.

mybarkingdogs,

@timkmak Just subscribed, though free only - I'm not paying Substack until they boot the transphobes.

I regret to learn today that "AI cover" (or "IA cover") is a thing on YouTube, and consists entirely of famous singers (or characters) voice cloned into singing cover songs. Frank Sinatra and Elvis were easy to find... As nifty as the technical feat might be, the implications for individual vocal artists could be rather negative. #AI #music #AIpocalpyse

mybarkingdogs,

@ai6yr Pfft, I once found something even more annoying: entirely AI written stuff, even with a generated title (one I vaguely remember was "Remain Here Shit" something or other) and a random stock photo.

In a way, I regret not downloading it because combining some of it might have resampled some good vaporwave, but each song in and of themselves didn't even have that element of stuff like vaporwave and remixes of old elevator muzak etc, the knowing changing it to make something from the trash.

Heard an story on "why climate change is good for some wine growers" driving to/from an appointment 😬 (I guess someone told them "we need POSITIVE CLIMATE CHANGE STORIES FOR A CHANGE!")

mybarkingdogs,

@ai6yr What annoys me about that (aside from the obvious) is that there is a space for somewhat positive news regarding successful mitigation or adaptation projects (which should be celebrated as such) but instead it's "how the current system can work with it."

Like I'd be much less bothered about a story about a project to replace unsafe dwellings (modular homes) with safer ones (hillside/cliff dwellings, Fuller domes) or to develop better water conservation/transportation structures as climates shift to wet/dry and/or cold/hot versus actual "seasons" because that's the realistic stuff we need to be doing short term...

@golgaloth It can write an explosive diarrhea themed episode of anything, although honestly that about sums up its level of "skill"

(e.g. it can't realize even things where an explosive diarrhea themed episode would probably be not appropriate nor a good idea. Like cooking shows, courtroom dramas...)

Why is “global south” any better of a turn of phrase than “3rd world” seems like a mostly cosmetic update to economic and racial distinctions that remain the result of bad political ideas and distinctions designed to enforce the differences they supposedly describe.

mybarkingdogs,

@futurebird Sometimes I've wondered about that. I use it out of respect and because it's what I see leftist spaces use (and I'm white and in the global north so it's not my decision to make), but I can't deny that sometimes, it feels like one of those pointless euphemism swaps that didn't ask the people involved and no one really wants.

what is the most evil file type

please boost

i must know evil

mybarkingdogs,

@deilann Proprietary file types in general. (Includes those for Adobe suite stuff, Ableton Live and FruityLoops, Microsoft suite stuff, etc, etc etc).

Often incredibly hard to open (or even extract the data out of) to an alternative (whether FOSS or proprietary itself), intentionally made to lock you into the program's ecosystem and constant updating (sometimes, older ones won't even open in newer versions) and generally just incredibly annoying and pointless

(and should literally be illegal for monopolistic/antitrust reasons)

everyone: don't you ever lighten up?

me: As an insect, the mantis breathes through pores all over her body. Hence, smoking using her mandibles isn't going to give her much of a tobacco high. She might try using 'the patch,' or 'hotboxing it' as those who smoke 'weed' have been known to do. However, nicotine is an insecticide so I wouldn't recommend it?

In case you missed the inside information from the Verge's Alex Heath: "Re: ActivityPub integration, it's still a priority for Threads but a "long" way out." https://mastodon.social/@alexeheath/110713788758597963

This whole federating with Threads thing has never made any sense and now we see it is very likely they have just been playing us the whole time. Let's stop falling for this nonsense and get back to building great open social media.

mybarkingdogs,

@mastodonmigration That said, people like Stux and Byron (and Gargron, too, although he was quieter about it) showed how willing they were to sell us out for whatever, to defame and mischaracterize their opponents, etc. I won’t be forgiving them or unblocking.

Especially because they will sell out to others.

I find myself wanting to contextualize the impact of gender-affirming care bans in a thread. I'm not writing a proper post on a Friday afternoon, Bluesky has reached a crisis point over moderation, Twitter feels death-throes-y to me, so I'm just going to post it here.

For reference, a judge in Kentucky just reluctantly reversed himself, allowing Kentucky's ban on gender affirming care to go into effect after the 6th circuit recently allowed a Tennessee law to.

https://substack.com/@chrisgeidner/note/c-19713769

mybarkingdogs,

@e_urq Also, I'll jump in to say that it's incredibly important to realize that things like bans on minors transitioning or the sports controversy are "foot in the door" tactics.

Except in those cases, the foot in the door is a fascist jackboot.

Hmm, running into lots of grumpy/cranky people yesterday/today (online and offline). Curious if it's because I am extra annoying the last couple of days, or because everyone is too hot due to the heatwave. 🤔

mybarkingdogs,

@ai6yr probably the heat. everyone seems angrier in general

mybarkingdogs,

@ai6yr It actually makes me wonder how much we can tie everything from increases in rage incidents everywhere to the appeal of rage-based politics (if the same factor is somehow influencing both authoritarian and anti-authoritarian rage...)

Perhaps a reason I despise the word ‘influencer’ is that it applies exclusivity to what should be viewed as - because it is - a universal human trait.

We influence each other. Welcome to humanity. What you read and who you interact with influences who you are.

This is why we must self moderate our influences rather than let them be chosen for us.

Self proclaimed influencers influence me too, just specifically to make posts like these and have disdain for the products that bought them.

mybarkingdogs,

@Jdreben Good point, although I would have to say that true crime is EXACTLY where therapists need to be available. Anyone who is too deep into that community/concept needs one badly

(not shaming people who are just curious as to what happened in a historical incident or to understand something that they heard about once in passing/on the news etc. I'm talking about people that are eating up the copaganda, treating the worst things real people can do to each other on an interpersonal level as a "fandom," etc...)
