I owe you guys more updates about the Gjovik v hearing on Thursday, but I've been so overwhelmed with emotion the last couple days; I've been kinda speechless.

I'll probably have to write a blog post about it to properly convey what it feels like to do something impossible like this & actually have it go in your favor.

I'll also share the audio recording when its posted (prob next week). The formal decision is prob 2-3 weeks out still, but I'm feeling good.

Ayesha: What?? No. The stupid cabinet door you said you fixed fell off the hinge and hit my foot. I can't take this anymore!

Me: What have I become? My sweetest friend...

Ayesha: 🤦🏽‍♀️

But seriously I need to fix that cabinet door.

My dream laptop:

  • Form factor of a late 90s / early 2000s (1.5-2" thick, 15" screen size or so) laptop. None of this thin-and-light nonsense.
  • Sunlight readable display capable of being used in reflective (backlight off) mode for reduced power
  • Optional cellular modem module
  • Two (or more) externally accessible, hot-swappable 100Wh batteries with power ORing. If you're going on a plane you can take some of the batteries out to make the FAA happy. But if I'm on the road I want the option to have several batteries and swap them without needing to be plugged in or shut down. The goal is to support multiple days of off-grid usage with no charging access.
  • 1000baseT and 10G SFP+ Ethernet ports
  • Lots of USB A and C ports. 5-10, at least, spread across several roots for improved bandwidth
  • Modular, repairable, upgradeable design so I can e.g. swap out the CPU board when it becomes obsolete but keep all of the peripherals and chassis

❌ bombing a refugee camp

❌ bombed a Canadian aid truck

Coming soon: it’s going to be trivial to deploy a different app on your Small Web server. Useful if you’re a dev and you’re playing around with different apps.

https://vimeo.com/932120624

(Also, notice the speed at which deployment happens. I’m one step away from implementing this in Domain using pre-warmed Kitten instances – called toasty kittens – thereby bringing the time it takes to deploy your own Small Web place down to a handful of seconds.)

They always put "sea salt" as opposed to just plain "salt" in ingredients lists these days, as if to say "look at how natural our product is". But everything comes from natural resources. There is no such thing as an artificial resource. What's the worst you can do to salt? Add iodine? Oh no! A nutrient!

I'm looking for recommendations for cloud file storage. I really want to set up my own server here at home but just can't afford the hardware right now. I've been using the free service from Dropbox and while I've enjoyed the service, I just can't afford to upgrade. Any recommendations for a privacy-respecting, affordable storage service? I was really interested in @ente after hearing about them on @DestinationLinux but I think they are only photo storage. I really like that they are completely Open Source, end-to-end encrypted, and privacy-respecting, though.

"is it true that rates are going down?

HANNAH DAVIS: No. That is a narrative that has been perpetuated, I think, in order to help communicate that the pandemic is over when it’s not. The CDC and census have a Household Pulse Survey that actually just released new data, and showed that the rates of long COVID in the U.S. adult population have actually jumped tremendously since the last time they counted."

@inquiline The phrase sounded very odd to me at first, yes. But once you read and understand how #HIV patients are kept alive by a daily intake of antivirals to not cure, but rather, arrest disease progression, it begins to make sense.

🇨🇳 is now repurposing antivirals like #Azvudine in an attempt to do the same for #COVID.

If the reaction to covid is a test for how the powerful deal with climate change—let the plague spread, deny people resources, and hold no one accountable for the damage—we are in tremendous trouble. Everyone is assured that a savior is coming: an agent of the Lord or the law. I cannot attest to the former and I am pretty sure the latter broke down long ago, but I understand the rationalizations. It is a horrible feeling to be a pawn in someone else’s plot masquerading as prophecy. Kendzior, Sarah. They Knew: How a Culture of Conspiracy Keeps America Complacent (p. 122). Flatiron Books. Kindle Edition.
Wouldn’t somebody do something, if it’s really that bad? Yes, they would: they would stand back and let you die and profit off the pain and other people would stand back and let them. Inertia is action; complacency is complicity. Normalcy bias is more destructive than paranoia. It encourages people to rationalize abhorrent behavior, to ignore open evidence of sadistic plots, and to dismiss the emotional resonance of an end times narrative as something intriguing only to fools. The most logical conclusion of why this is happening—powerful corporate and political actors have aligned to profit off predictable catastrophe, in what writer Naomi Klein has called “disaster capitalism”—is also the most horrifying. There is no way out but through, and that’s the crux of the fear. The apocalypse takes longer than you thought. Kendzior, Sarah. They Knew: How a Culture of Conspiracy Keeps America Complacent (pp. 122-123). Flatiron Books. Kindle Edition.

Jeff Brumley highlights a new book by Brian Kaylor and Beau Underwood called Baptizing America, which shows that the problem of fusing Christianity and Americanism into white Christian nationalism goes way beyond white evangelical churches. It has been part and parcel of white Christianity in the US across the board for a long time now, and pointing to white evangelicals as the sole problem lets other white US Christians off the hook.
