it's been a while since i last posted!

staying pretty busy with a big project at work — an SOC 2 audit. intense but exciting!

on the more personal side of life, i've been dumping time & heart into a possible relationship.

i'm still making music and i've gotta new joint lined up for bandcamp friday!

i saw mastodon 4.2 was released last week, and it has some interesting new features like opt-in search. i tried an upgrade but it failed? i'll give it another shot soon (attn: rap.social peeps -- if you experience an hour-ish outage, that's why).

fashion is an interesting topic to me. how much value and judgment we put towards it. this isn't meant to take away from your sentiment but i kinda come from the opposite end of the spectrum, where people often push (negative) ideas onto me for being so casual (plus heavily tattooed and fit) and the fact i don't give a fuck because i consider my true value to be more closely related to my heart.

thank you for the thoughtful reply. we all definitely have our perceptions and i still battle whether perception is reality or not. it is and it isn't? not everything has to be black and white? in fact, i tattooed "grey" on the side of my hand with that idea in fact. at the end of the day, humans try to take in the variables present and make sense of it because, if we didn't, we wouldn't feel comfortable. that said, i believe that is where true tolerance comes into the equation -- i don't need to understand everything. and we never will.

50 years ago tonight in south bronx, what is commonly known as where the birth of hip-hop occurred, with dj kool herc starting up the first of his parties in the rec-room of a housing project.

this is an important moment in the history of dj'ing, because really this is where it all began - on two turntables kool herc invented beat juggling, playing classic records like "amen brother" by the winstons or "apache" by the incredible bongo band, but only playing the breakdowns, and going back and forth between double copies of the record to give an elongated track of just the breakbeat, while hopping on the mic and giving shoutouts to the people in the room - an old jamaican tradition known as "toasting."

from this point forward the art of dj'ing would forever change into what we know now as hip-hop.

S2, EP4: Sha-Key & Earl Blaize

Like always, there are a few side stories in the Sha-Key episode & one of the key ones in this episode is about Ninety-9 a.k.a Poet 99, who was part of Boom Poetic. I’m a HUGE fan & I’ve posted, wrote & talked about her several times since the existence of the internet, as well as on my radio shows over the years.

Below is a link to listen to two of the demos from her shelved Grand Royal album, which I speak about in the episode, after Ninety-9 got signed when the Beastie Boys were impressed from what they saw while on the Lalapalooza tour together in ’94. Ninety-9 was on that tour as a member of Boom Poetic, the crew founded by Sha-Key.

One of the tracks from that demo is “Jhompa”, produced by Djinji Brown & it’s always been a favorite of mine. I hit Djinji up yesterday and he gave me some more context on that one, including this photo I included!

This photo (Ninety-9, Djinji, Acyealone, and Beans) was taken at Tower Records on 4th and Broadway in New York. On this day/week, Djinji produced “Jhompa”, the song “Hip Hop Fans” for Aceyalone, and a track called “Composition In Void” for Beans. He also told me that MCA was in the studio (Greene Street Studios) when they recorded “Jhompa”!

If you aren’t familiar with Djinji’s production, you should definitely dig in. Besides the great work for Sha-Key and Ninety-9, he also did work for Jungle Brothers, The Unspoken Herd, Supernatural, as well as some solo projects as well. But one of my favorites of his is a lesser known track titled “Larger Than Life” by Double Edge. That song is excellent!
