The Essentials

https://www.flickr.com/photos/kelsonv/53758017726

When I took this photo back in 2016, it was a combination coffee/Chinese food restaurant: they sold coffee in the mornings and Chinese food for lunch and dinner. The owner had previously run a separate coffee shop (The Bean Counter, IIRC) in the same shopping center, then combined the two businesses to save on rent. It was one of our go-to Chinese takeout sources, and I’d sometimes grab coffee in the mornings if I was in the area or on my way somewhere in that direction.

The old coffee location sat vacant for a few years until a bakery (with coffee on the side) moved in. Amusingly, the bakery — with is still there today — also chose a pun-based name: Redondough (as in Redondo Beach).

In early 2020 — and I mean early, either January or February — they were offered a really nice buyout price by someone who wanted to turn-key convert it overnight to a Hawaiian restaurant. I imagine when mid-March rolled around and the initial Covid lockdown started, they were extremely relieved to have accepted it!

I never did get around to trying the Hawaiian place, even for takeout. Eventually it was taken over by a Hawaiian-style fast food chain.

Photo taken February 27, 2016 and originally posted on my Instagram account a few days later with this title, but no commentary.

Hi #blind folks, especially software developers! I'm taking part in a #GitHub research meeting and I hope to raise as many #accessibility points as I can. I was told this fact is not at all confidential, so I may gather feedback.
Here's what I remember: multiline comments are inaccessible (eternal story); sometimes menu roles are used where they shouldn't be (watching repos, reactions etc.). Anything else that really bugs you at GitHub? Thanks!

I need some mastodon magic, please.
I'm looking for countries that have introduced or broadened Indoor Air Quality laws since 2020. I'm particularly interested in the implementation/enforcement of those laws, especially in schools, healthcare, public transport...
I'm aware of laws in France, Belgium and Ontario but haven't found much on how it's going.

Please boost for reach!

Daylight Computer is a 60fps paper white thing display (but not e-ink?) for $729. Did anybody here give it a try or see a review? I like the sound of Public Benefit Company even though I'm not sure what the actual benefits for the public are.

@alex This Hacker News thread, with comments by the founder, may give some answers.

"We developed our own custom epaper display tech we call LivePaper. We focused on solving the tradeoffs RLCDs traditionally have - around reflectance %, metallic-look / not Paperlike enough, viewing angle, white state, rainbow mura, parallax, resolution, size, lack of quality backlight, etc."

The mushroom ring was drawn in chalk, so I'd thought nothing of it...

As the fae realm drew me in, I tried to remember - was it just local fairy food that I needed to avoid? Was the lunch in my bag safe since I'd brought it with me?

"It worked! It's a human!" exclaimed an excited pixie.

"They-them, please," I blurted instinctively.

"They're a human! Humans exist!"

"Ugh, you won the bet, now let's send them back..." grumped an elf.

I'm mostly at my standalone GoToSocial server these days. I tried migrating this account again, and this time I figured out the problem: I'd misconfigured my server's proxy settings and everything was getting rate limited.

So next time it should finish - but I have to wait another 29 days for the cooldown. Meanwhile, if you'd like to see what I'm up to lately, feel free to follow me at @kelson

I was surprised to find even this much of a lay phone left standing yesterday. Having just re-watched The Matrix, I thought I'd tint it green and call it "No Exit."

Need some bird help!

My 6 year old says he saw a kiwibird, but we live in Oregon, USA. I'm trying to find similarly shaped birds to show him so we can figure out what it was but although we loved the woodcock dance videos (thanks Mom!) they don't live on this coast. Any other ideas?

Boosts great if you've got birder friends who might have good ideas!

This excellent article by @molly0xfff reminded me of the sci-fi trope where everyone in the future lives in a domed bunker & gets told not to go outside because it's a wasteland filled with Bad People.

Of course the protagonists leave the dome & find that the reality is a bit different: outside can be scary, but it's not the hellscape they were told.

Big Tech walled gardens are the dome; outside them is a risky wonderland that’s ours for the taking.

Leave the dome.
