I'm a Covid cautious person doing my best to avoid plague carriers. Splitting my plague era between Maui and the PNW.

I've been a one man tech support guru for ages. I mostly do managed solutions / sysadmin type stuff for small businesses and remote tech support for end users, chiefly in the greater Seattle area. I like being exposed to a wide range of technical challenges.

Holy shit, 195 tremors in the Svartsengi area in the last 12 hours. Civil defense is evacuating Grindavik now, in advance of the previous evacuate by Monday deadline. Official sources are saying eruption may be imminent and that it is possibly going to be centered further south than the previous eruption.

After weeks of people scratching their heads after looking at GPS ground deformation sensors which showed the earth bulging more than previous eruptions, an eruption has finally started again in Iceland.

And here is the after:

One small puncture and a bit of road rash, but this is a seriously heavy duty outer bag. It's almost like tough vinyl or something. So, what of the contents?

The IDF has killed seven World Central Kitchen aid workers traveling in a convoy of three vehicles. World Central Kitchen aid workers are clearly identified by their clothing and their vehicles always contain highly visible large logos. This isn't imo a mistake. They were targeted.

World Central Kitchen is pausing all operations in the region.

Getting pretty hungry. 2200 calories really isn't enough for me to maintain a normal activity level and feel good. Comes with being 6 feet tall and 300 pounds. I haven't starved to death, though, which is the chief goal of a HDR.

Going to make the day's entrees from the HDR, two stews. Going to boil them in their packs. Didn't do this long enough yesterday and the result wasn't quite fully heated. Everything is precooked, though, so this is more for taste.

US Centcom already failed to acknowledge how its drops earlier this week along the beach zone in Gaza led to a number of deaths to drowning/chute entanglement and trampling.

https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/aid-drop-off-gaza-beach-leads-drownings-local-authorities-say-2024-03-26/

Now, it looks like they've maybe done it again, with 26 pallet loads dropping into the sea:

Construction crews appear to be attempting to close a gap in the berm leading to the power plant. You can see how close the lava has already gotten. Another man versus nature battle taking place in real-time.

I think Biden has too much ego and is too wrapped up in this idea that only he could defeat Trump and yet he is pursuing public stances which I think are likely to lose him the election. In particularly, his unreserved support of Israel as they commit indefensible atrocities is likely to cause a lot of liberal voters to not show up to the polls. I really wish he'd consider stepping down in favor of another candidate.

According to the Mayo clinic, adult humans in temperate climates require between 2.7 liters and 3.7 liters of water for their bodies to function normally, depending on if you're a man or a woman. Lets say there are even numbers of both in Northern Gaza and split the difference and say 3.2 liters.

Night sometimes lets you better observe the flow patterns of the lava. Here are four stills where you can clearly see lava moving into the quarry area at bottom center. Afaik, this is the pit where most of the material for the defensive berms originated. It's a big hole, but the eruption is spilling out ~14.5 cubic meters per second. Once it fills, Route 43 will probably get overrun in not too much time. ~1/3rd of a mile to the road.

Having a late night meal of the two entrees from my Humanitarian Daily Ration. I'm eating nothing but HDRs, an aid ration specifically made for the US government for aid work to starving people and which can be airdropped without lethal parachutes and pallets. A Palestinian in Gaza receiving one of these bags every day would not starve to death. I know, because I, a 300 pound man, have not starved to death.

The US just did its biggest airdrop ever, dropping 50,000 MREs over north gaza.

https://www.centcom.mil/MEDIA/PRESS-RELEASES/Press-Release-View/Article/3725711/march-31-uscentcom-conducts-humanitarian-airdrops-into-gaza/

Except this isn't a particularly big effort. It certainly isn't anything like the Berlin Airlift, which saw 12,000+ tons delivered per day.

It isn't even on the scale of what we did in Afghanistan at the beginning of the war there. We delivered 750k+ HDRs (which supply a full day's nutrition, versus an MRE, which is just a single meal) in the span of two weeks in 2001.

A lot of the western navies participating in the naval actions against the Houthis drones/missiles in the Red Sea and pirates from Somalia have been getting their first real combat shakedown and it hasn't always been going well. The French forces seem to be performing admirably and the Indian navy seems ready for gutsy actions, including airdropping troops into the water to conduct naval boarding operations against dozens of armed pirates!

There is a big ongoing earthquake swarm near Grindavik. Both Grindavik and the Blue Lagoon are now being evacuated, with sirens going off in both places.

Might be a good day to keep some of the webcam streams open to see the probable start of the next eruption.

So, the Eurovision song contest kicked off today with opening ceremonies. This year's contest is particularly controversial due to the inclusion of Israel (notably not a European nation) and their attempts to submit a song which appeared to reference the October Hamas attacks. Political songs are not allowed in Eurovision.

I've been mostly watching news on the contest through following Icelandic papers as part of my fascination with the ongoing eruption there.

In Iceland, they're in the process of building a second set of magma defense berms on Grindavik's eastern flanks. The primary berm system has been overflowed twice in recent weeks and lava piled up behind the existing berms is taller than the berms now across much of their length.

The new berms will be 6 meters high and offset from the original ones by about 120 meters.

So, basically World Central Kitchen worked with the IDF for weeks to ensure inspection of their cargo, arrive, offload and transport the first hundred tons to their warehouse and are promptly killed by the IDF. That is basically the timeline at this point.

WCK appears to have ready to leave Cyprus with their ships loaded with food as early as the 16th. Then they just anamolously stopped for two weeks (indicative of a Israeli imposed obstacle).

Well, my trusty Nikon D7000 really appears to be giving up the ghost. Sometimes I attempt to take a picture and nothing happens and I get an error light. Other times, I try to turn it on and get an error light. Its taken a few really hard knocks over the years, enough to actually crack off a few small bits of metal and I suspect this may have allowed for moisture ingress over time, as I've done a fair amount of photography in the rain.

It sounds like the Trident pier itself may have been beached/grounded. The ability of the US military to execute JLOTS at this location on an ongoing basis has really been called into question. This just isn't a good system for delivering aid by boat.
