The big thing about the conviction is that even if the Supreme Court were to uphold presidential immunity, it would not apply to because he was tried on state charges. Unless, of course, the SCOTUS wants to take an axe to States' Rights. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/05/30/trump-trial-convicted-impact/

“Trump’s entire persona is built around the facade that he is a powerful strongman, impervious to attacks and solely capable of defending his followers.

“Now he stands for election as a convict, a weak man too cowardly to take the stand who was bested by a local district attorney. The totalitarian edifice looks pockmarked.”

How America could vote for this weak, shouty, cry-baby is beyond me.

Today, like many other West Australian teachers, I'm not going to work this morning.

It's interesting that our industrial action is represented in the media as about pay. We're not striking over salary - we're striking because the system is broken.

My son has had no Phys Ed teacher all year. He's had a procession of relief teachers which, for a special needs child, is extremely distressing. He attends an inner city public school, but staffing shortages are statewide.

Speaking of special needs students, I'd like to look after my own without having to skip lunch to ensure their needs are met.

I'd like the Education Department to give me a personal device so I can do my job
(more efficiently). If I want a laptop, I have to lease one.

I'd like an acknowledgement of how teaching has recently become more difficult and demanding, especially during #COVID19, when we kept schools open and tried to keep students safe.

I enforced the mask mandate far more often than a rank-and-file police officer. I've probably been threatened and assaulted more times than many police officers too. And the statewide mobile phone ban? Guess who enforces that every single day.

So many of my colleagues have left teaching: re-trained or resigned due to burnout and stress. Who suffers? The students.

It's not about the pay. We're tired, and we need support. We're underfunded and under-resourced. We need to improve conditions for students. We need to fix the system.

FerdiMagellan,

@neenish_tart We need to give money to public schools instead of private ones. Do they have staff shortages?

Would pay rises encourage more people into the profession?

Universities and Their Function by Alfred North Whitehead

https://la.utexas.edu/users/hcleaver/330T/350kPEEwhiteheadunivfxtable.pdf

"A university is imaginative or it is nothing - at least nothing useful"

"Imagination can only be communicated by a faculty whose members themselves wear their learning with imagination"

"The whole art in the organisation of a university is the provision of a faculty whose learning is lighted up with imagination"

That's key, an imaginative faculty. Absence of which the purpose of a uni ceases to exist.

FerdiMagellan,
@FerdiMagellan@aus.social avatar

@impactology

The learning occurs in the production of the artifact whether that is writing essays that demonstrate well formed arguments, doing projects in teams, or case studies on real world businesses or situations, and reflecting on those and applying that knowledge to new situations or creating new products.

All the learning is pointless if it isn’t practised and subsequently assessed. Without assessment few students would apply themselves.

Students need to see where they’re going or there’s no motivation to learn.

How federal tax dollars meant to fight could end up boosting ’s fossil fuel production

"COVID-19 poses a serious risk to brain health, even in mild cases, and the effects are now being revealed at the population level," clinical epidemiologist Ziyad Al-Aly said

#COVID19 #brainhealth @auscovid19

Source: https://people.com/covid-linked-lower-iq-poor-memory-other-negative-impacts-brain-health-8619254

Al-Aly, who is director of the Clinical Epidemiology Center at the VA Saint Louis Health Care System in Missouri, wrote that he has been studying long COVID since early reports of the disease and before the term was even coined by the medical community. He explained in his essay that "large epidemiological analyses" showed that people who had COVID were at an increased risk of cognitive deficits including memory problems. A study of people with a mild to moderate form of the virus showed significant, prolonged inflammation of the brain and changes that "are commensurate with seven years of brain aging." Al-Aly also cited imaging studies done on people both before and after their COVID infections, which showed "shrinkage of brain volume" and "altered brain structure" after infection. Other research reveals that people who require hospitalization or intensive care amid their COVID infection may develop "cognitive deficits and other brain damage that are equivalent to 20 years of aging."
In addition, Al-Aly highlighted preliminary analysis pooling together data from 11 studies that showed that COVID increased the risk of development of new-onset dementia in people older than 60. He also noted that autopsies performed on people who died with COVID revealed "devastating damage" in their brains. Autopsies of people who had severe COVID but died a few months later from other causes showed that the virus was still present in brain tissue, suggesting that "SARS-CoV-2 is not only a respiratory virus." Studies assessing patients hospitalized with COVID who experienced brain fog indicate that the virus can disrupt the blood-brain barrier, "the shield that protects the nervous system, which is the control and command center of our bodies," Al-Aly wrote. Most recently, Al-Aly said, a study published on Feb. 29 in the New England Journal of Medicine assessed cognitive abilities including spatial reasoning, memory and planning in nearly 113,000 people who had previously had COVID. "The researchers found that those who had been infected had significant deficits in memory and executive task performance," he wrote. The deficits were seen among people infected with the virus in the early phase of the pandemic, as well as when the delta and omicron variants dominated. According to Al-Aly, that same study found that "those who had mild and resolved COVID-19 showed cognitive decline equivalent to a three-point loss of IQ." Those with unresolved persistent symptoms —

Hey #SwissBubble - I have a really dumb question, but I need to get this resolved.

It's been hanging over my head since a couple of years in to the pandemic, and I've finally decided that I must do something about it.

I have a car. It's an old Hyundai i10 that no one here in Switzerland is likely to buy. It probably does not run right now because it's been sitting in a parking space in a garage for two years without being moved.

It is not registered in Switzerland. The title is German, but I never registered it here, because it would have required going out during lockdown etc.

So basically, even if it ran, it couldn't be legally driven, as it would have to be repaired to the correct state to pass inspection.

I've found I just don't need a car.

And so I'm really not willing to poke around to find someone who will tow the car from its underground garage parking space and then not screw me making it inspection-ready. Especially since I don't understand much Swiss German, and mechanics etc do like to take advantage of that.

I KNOW VERY LITTLE ABOUT CARS.

What I do know is that I need to get rid of this car. The best case is that I can sell it to someone for spare parts, but I just don't have the communications wherewithall to do that.

Does anyone, ANYONE, who knows what the best thing to do in this situation is in Switzerland? Who to contact? What to look out for?

My ADHD/executive function problems/social anxiety are screwing me here, but I really want to get rid of this thing and just buy a nice cargo e-bike.

EDIT: I appreciate the ideas I've gotten from people in other places, but I'm really looking for a Swiss perspective here, and definitely not for a recap of Google results. Thanks!!!
