Proud to be a part of this movement at #UCLA and walk along my colleagues in defense of our students and the broader principles of academic freedom, critical inquiry, and university autonomy.
Broad divestment from sponsors of state violence is—in my view—essential for the mission of an independent university. In today’s context of #Gaza, it’s even more pressing.
While this report by @guardian could be improved by refraining from describing deputized, state-sanctioned violence as "anarchy" and playing into the statist "anarchy = violent chaos" trope, this is otherwise good reporting which you won't find anywhere in the NYT these days.
The subtitle reads ‘UCLA watched the chaos unfold in the middle of the night and did nothing until it was far too late’. There was no mistake, that is what they intended to happen, aided and abetted by the ‘police’
"The students, as they will tell you, are there for Gaza, where 90 per cent of schools, and all universities, have been destroyed. The university, meanwhile, is forced to confront the moral vacuity of its policies, which have in the end protected no one except extremists willing to join forces with neo-Nazis to safeguard Israel from criticism."
This morning, police made more arrests at #UCLA. I held a sign saying "support free speech" and "UCLA Faculty". A woman approached me to debate what had happened, and quickly devolved from charging students with antisemitism to the efficacy of vaccines. She was an alumna. I hope our conversation moved her some, but I'm not holding my breath.
More than 40 arrests at P2 parking structure, a sit in at Moore Hall, and continued unclear action at #UCLA this morning. I havent made it to campus yet but apparently cops are checking IDs all through campus.
This is quite something...
A video recording from 1958-10-08 that begins with 70 seconds of the closing of an original #ThePriceIsRight airing -- in colour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nk8jIPbEBwk&t=30s
Extremely rare, if not the first time I think we are able to see a bit of a #BillCullen -hosted #NBC broadcast of #PriceIsRight -- "in living colour".
The Kraft Music Hall programme, presented by #MiltonBerle , is interesting in itself. Thank you to his widow, Lorna, for donating the tape to #UCLA for preservation.
"WSJ finds students consulted with and received training from groups that have supported Hamas and attacks on Israel; NYT finds pro-Israel protesters started clash at UCLA"
This week the world found out - #UCLA has the best student run college paper in America. So incredibly proud of the Bruin reporters who fearlessly kept reporting this week even while getting assaulted by vicious right wing mob. Support the Daily Bruin today. 💙💛 https://uclastudentmedia.com/donate/
