Great networking meeting today at Topping & Company Booksellers in Edinburgh, talking about translating books and selling books. Bought this one at the recommendation of one of the booksellers: Bad Cree by Jessica Johns.

Update on the situation. I've decided to take the plunge and get “creative” for Italian, fishing from ancient Greek for the names I was having troubles with. One of the problem is that some of the names actually exist in Italian, although with slightly different meanings.

Here's the situation as of now, with comments. The translations are still open for debate, so if anyone has comments or suggestions, I'm open.

One of the things I love about is that, despite being conceptually in the / genre, it has a very original and quirky take on it. This also reflects on a number of details down to the level of semantics —and that's where my love turns into hate when I want to translate it.

Here's some examples:

🇮🇹 "Benvenuti! Questa è la documentazione di Python 3.12.3."

The Python docs are now officially available in Italian! 🚀

OK, are now at 99% completion. The only thing missing for 100% are three strings pertaining “gated prisms”. Gating here is to be intended in the circuit logic sense (a gated prism is one that doesn't let light through). I'd rather use the proper Italian term here but I have no idea what it is. If anybody know, please do let me know

New blogpost, on #translation and @poetry

What kind of lived experience is it necessary for a translator to have? Is it possible for white authors to translate Black poetry? I argue that while, certainly, lived experience is important for poetry, this does not render translators incapable simply in virtue of their social location.

Thrilled that KAIROS, written by Jenny Erpenbeck and translated by Michael Hofman, has won the International Booker Prize. I found this novel so affecting in its weaving together of German history and personal history. https://www.npr.org/2024/05/21/1252680852/kairos-jenny-erpenbeck-2024-international-booker-prize-winner#:~:text='Kairos'%20by%20Jenny%20Erpenbeck%20wins%202024%20International%20Booker%20Prize%20Jenny,undergoes%20its%20own%20political%20transformation.
