With more & more companies desperately trying to get aboard the #AI hype train, I have a plea:
For the love of grapefruit, someone understand that we're going to need AI-less solutions VERY soon, when the whole charade collapses because it's actually worse than useless.
Whichever #services have avoided tying their fate to the hype will be SO SUCCESSFUL soon, when everybody's going to need a place to get away from those who did.

@JohanEmpa image uploads for mastodon.green seem very intolerant for packet loss.
Tried to upload pics of aurora borealis while at cabin, where packet loss is quite high. No success with any client & tried several including standard web interface.
Image upload & even video upload was slow but eventually succesfull for commercial giant platforms like instagram.
On the #Linux#Terminal, is there a way to list all #systemctl issues? For example, show the number of and which #services have issues, the same way cockpit does in the web interface?
Amazing thing about most all the Red States, is that they claim to have the secret to low taxation. Evidently that means to have low taxes, but provide few if any basic services. Whenever there is an emergency or dire need, they rely on the Federal government for even the most basic things as sewers and roads. #redstates #leeches #services
Had to get a loaner vehicle from a local dealership because a 10 y/o car that I love needed a lot of work. So they gave me the latest model of the same car -- brand new -- which was vastly less powerful than ours, and kept trying to steer me between the lines and cause the steering wheel to rumble when I hit a line and all kinds of crap that just annoyed me.
The dealership probably thought they would entice me to buy the newer model, but driving it just made me more convinced I made the right decision to put the money into the old car.
@briankrebs The current trend to adding software to cars and making them more gadget like is a serious turnoff for me. Then add annoying driver-assistance functions and selling us services from inside the car. No. Just stop.
Which of those cars will be useful in 15-20 years? What happens to resale value when your car can’t get software updates any more? Or expensive screens fail? Just seeing lots of long-term headaches there.
While the UK still scores OK in Transparency International's #corruption index, it has now called to be ranked 20th in the world.
Given this is a survey of professional perceptions, this is pretty revealing of the impact that the #Tories are having on our international reputation...
Given our increasing dependence on #services exports (see a previous post) this really is not good news for the country in terms of corruption or for the service exporters in terms of reputational capital
The Purchase Managers Index (PMI) is a much watched lead indicator for #business sentiment - above 50% more firms are positive about the future, below more are negative... so what's interesting is not so much the composite measure but the divergence between expectations in #services & #manufacturing.... the Q. is (relating to a recent post) whether we should worry about the negative sentiment in manufacturing or see it as more evidence that the UK really is pivoting towards services?
The good news:
UK's #services#experts are one of the few areas where the economy is still clearly successful;
the bad news: increased domination of #London in providing those services further undermines any attempt to resolve the problem of the UK's problem of regional under-development.
And again, while its good that this success relies less on the #financialservices sector than it used to, centralised London-centric activity still drives #inequality.
First post ever.
Not started yet, but considering the services presented here: https://www.bsecure.dk/ General feedback on the site is also very welcome.
"Don't install Mastodon, they said. It will be very heavy on the server, they said."
By far, the service that consumes approximately twice the resources of ALL the others combined at BSD Cafe is the Matrix server (and its related Postgres).
Maybe a Loyalty Card system could help with returning customers for the service? This could be run all year around instead of just December Deals or anything like that.
As physical loyalty cards make no sense for an online business a Digital Loyalty Card is most likely what I will have to do for this sort of thing.
#Mental difficulties are another story.
There are some Internet #services that provide help to them though (I doubt they completely cure said difficulties but a small help is always better than none!).
#CloudFlare had an #incident late last week affecting their #services. This has been widely commented upon, because #reliability is their raison d'etre (sorry if my French spelling is bad...).
To me, this should count as a resounding success. Even with a #cascading#failure of systems, backups, and #recovery procedures, customers' sites still didn't go down - they lost access to analytics and the ability to make changes, but no actual outage.
One of the single most impactful climate emergency changes: Allowing front-yard and driveway businesses.
This would make neighborhoods walkable over night. New jobs in local places. Cafes, grocery shops, repair clinics, tool libraries, arcades, and beyond - right on your street.
Destroying oil demand, commutes, and car dependency over night.
This policy change can happen in as little as 3 sentences, according to Hazel Borys and Strong Towns. pHow can we make this happen everywhere?
Check out the full video, "Why Did We Make Front Yard Businesses Illegal?", which shows some awesome examples and gets into what we can do today — from About Here, Urbanarium, and Uytae Lee.
And share and boost to get people talking about this. This is one of the first and most important changes we can make, for climate emergency transitions. From a path dependency standpoint, it needs to happen first too -- making what we can walkable and low energy to start, and then seeing what we need.
