Reminder that BEV fanatics are still stuck in the past. It's laughable they're still repeating the same outdated garbage from 2014. They still think batteries costs are dropping (just an illusion caused by China's subsidies), or that charging is somehow already solved (not even close).

In reality, BEVs are on their way out. It is already losing to PHEVs and hybrids now. Newer ideas like FCEVs will drive them entirely out of the market later.

I’m glad to see more sane takes on the upside of hybrids, PHEVs and FCEVs over BEVs. Reddit’s car community used to be dominated by nutty BEV fanatics, but now those are mostly pushed out and discredited. People are now realizing that other types of EVs have value. BEVs are not going to take over the world anytime soon.

Even with an adequate charging infrastructure the "fill up" times would be considerably longer than petrol. Also isn't super fast charging a battery not good for longevity? More trains and tracks please.

Eventually, VW will realize that its "100% BEV future" strategy has failed. I suspect the next step is to abandon its BEV-only platforms in favor of multiple-purpose platforms.

I think Toyota was right all along.

It’s an unpopular opinion among EV purists, but I think hybrids will reduce a lot more carbon emissions than BEVs, for the simple reason that way more people can switch. Even without access to charging outlets, hybrids are far more efficient thanks to their regenerative braking. With access to outlets, they are as good as EVs within their electric range, which will account for most of the daily commutes of their owners, and all with far smaller batteries and better costs of ownership than BEVs.

The way to eliminate emissions due to personal transportation is not to put people in BEVs. It’s to eliminate commutes and massively invest in (electrified) public transportation.

Reminder that the difference between BEVs and PHEVs in terms of emissions is much smaller than the BEV promoters have claimed. In fact, it is arguable that small PHEVs are the greenest cars you can buy today. In reality, BEVs are only one type of green car, not the only kind. And the obsession with only BEVs is just a fad. Even a cult at times.

Here's a secret: Their cheaper BEVs won't save them. In fact, it will likely be the last thing they make before going under, assuming they even get that far.

BEVs are not the future. They are a fad. Especially hugely expensive BEVs, but even "low-cost" BEVs are very expensive.

As a result, we will see the industry move away from them. PHEVs and hybrids for now, but eventually ideas like FCEVs and hydrogen cars will take root.

No surprise, a significant percentage of BEV owners don't actually drive their BEVs that much. They are just commuter cars, and are backed up by conventional ICE cars.

This is because BEVs only make sense as commuter cars, and honestly could be replaced by PHEVs entirely if range was semi-decent. BEVs themselves are just a fad, and are not the future. They do not make sense as vehicles outside of this small niche.

As everyone could've predicted, GM is forced to walk back it's all-BEV truck lineup. It's one thing to jump into a fad; at least there are government mandates to worry about. But BEV trucks make zero sense and are basically unusable for their intended purpose. As a result, they will have to build PHEV versions. Eventually, they'll realize they'll have to stop making BEV trucks altogether.

Rivian is screwed. A pointless company making expensive BEVs that few people want. A Johnny-come-lately to the BEV fad, trying to cash into something that is likely on its way out.

The future will not be BEVs. It will likely pivot to PHEVs for the short-run, and something else in the long run, such as FCEVs or hydrogen cars.

More signs of the decline. BEVs are just a green fad. No different than a fad diet. People who move on from BEVs and our desire for green transportation will fail unless we invest in more practical green vehicles.

I have personally suggested more investment in FCEVs or hydrogen cars, with PHEVs as a valid stopgap. BEVs themselves are doomed to fail.

GM waking up to reality, multiple years late to the party.

It's hard to take GM seriously given how many dumb decisions they've made recently, but at least they are not suicidally dumb. BEVs are not the future of transportation, and all car companies will have to build alternatives.

The answer is obvious: Invest in an alternative to the BEV. There are many paths here: hybrids and PHEVs in the short run. E-fuels and hydrogen cars/FCEVs in the long run. Also, more mass transit and walkable neighborhoods, since we are not obligated to only drive. The stupidest conclusion is to have tunnel vision and demand that everyone drive BEVs.

I want to share my experience with an SUV Plug-In Hybrid () I now own.
IMO Is only worth it if:

  • you have a good place to plug it in at home & preferably a garage. Otherwise you might worry about cable stealing, vandalism, bad weather.
  • your usecase is the city and under 30 miles a day or less.
  • you are wiling to develop a new habit of plug it almost daily.
Whats the point of an PHEV if you cannot benefit the most of the "ev" part? So, if you're gonna get one, value highest ev range.

More evidence that BEVs are overhyped and suffer from low demand.

Another reminder that we should've invested in a diversity of technologies. Hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fuel cell cars are all needed. Eventually, the BEV will be shown to be a fad and only a transitional technology. It is too expensive to be more than a niche and a small part of personal transportation.

Does anyone own a ? How often do you plug it in? Or rather how often do you need to plug it in? How often do you use full EV mode and when? Does it recharge kinetically from braking/driving (sorry don’t know the right terms)? Does it otherwise function like a standard HEv? Do you like it?
