One thing: I really wish the MSM would stop saying "hush money to a porn star" and "cover up an affair". He was convicted of ELECTIONS FRAUD. This matters. Having sex (barely consensual if it all) with a porn actor is NOT illegal, nor is lying about it to your wife. Spending campaign money to influence an election by manipulation of information and the media: Illegal. This is about elections and core democratic principles.

<social scientist rant> For the love of god, stop saying “correlation is not causation” as if it’s a grand revelatory statement that invalidates everything. Of course correlation isn’t causation. It’s CORRELATION. Correlation is its own thing; it can manifest in a full range between strong and weak; and opens up key questions about why two (or more) things are correlated. If things are correlated that means they are hooked together in some way for some reason statistically. And that matters in its own way. If X and Y are correlated, but X doesn’t cause Y, who cares? They’re CORRELATED. So the next question is Why? How? Causation is not the only thing that matters. </social scientist rant>

Excellent. As these events unfurl, I’m proud to be in some small way associated with these university faculty.

Trans and Enby friends: Do you have recommendations for good resources that YOU approve of personally (i.e., that you think do a good job from your perspective as a queer person) online that I can give to my faculty for teaching their students about WHY we should use people's chosen pronouns? I have a little spiel I do with my students in class that seems to work well, but I have faculty who want more in depth resources to use as needed. For context, in two classes this semester, it has become a disruptive issue with a few students outright refusing to use people's pronouns, and so I'm scrambling to give support to the faculty leading those classrooms and to the queer students trying to survive that situation. Thanks!

I did the morning shift in the pickets lines. There were way more people than I expected in the rain. The strikers had presence at every single entrance to campus. I was in a pretty large group across from one of the parking garages. The press started showing up (both local and National) around noon. And there were way more strikers showing up as I left. #CFA #strike #FuckNeoliberalEducation

Here’s a pretty good lefty take on the CFA (CSU) Strike that begins in a few hours.

California Faculty Association (for CSU faculty, librarians, counselors, and coaches) beings its work stoppage (a.k.a., strike) at Midnight tonight. I just received instructions for Department Chairs from the union, all of which was stuff I knew already, but it was nice they are reaching out. Because of the exceptionally hostile and threatening stance of the CSU (not to mention the gaslighting and union-busting), the union is being particularly clear and insistent that we log out of Google completely on all devices and log out of Canvas completely on all devices to ensure that no "activity" can be tracked. The email I just received contained this final warning:

THIS IS A LEGALLY SANCTIONED JOB ACTION. YOU ARE LEGALLY PROTECTED FROM FIRING AND RETALIATION IF YOU PARTICIPATE IN A FULL WORK STOPPAGE. IF YOU DO NOT ENGAGE IN A FULL WORK STOPPAGE, CFA CANNOT PROTECT YOU FROM RETALIATION.

I'm teaching a first-year/sophomore level intro to pop culture class this semester. I've never taught the topic as a survey and below a senior level, so I'm kind of floundering for readings and structure of the class. I'm hoping someone out there maybe teaches a similar class and has an idea for a long, scaffolded assignment that might build up over the semester? I'm already going to have them do weekly "Commonplace Books" which I'll guide with prompts; that will be an "additive" grade for a big chunk. I'm considering some way to do something exam-like, but I'd also like to have a cool semester-project (I do something like this in my American Stories class, which is why I'm thinking about it this way). Any ideas? I'm also super into sharing, so if there's something I do that I can share/help I'd be more than happy to reciprocate :)

@beatnikprof @VCP @carrideen After having a very frustrating discussion with an Education colleague who was insisting that (her version of) Universal design would solve all our pedagogy problems, it occurred to me that she was basically telling me that, for reasons, I must not require reading (even though critical deep reading is one of the primarily SKILLS of a humanities degree), I must never require oral argumentation (even though effective oral dialogue and argumentation is a primary skill of a humanities degree), and I must never require writing (even though that is a third key skill of a humanities BA). Also something something about exams, because requiring students to actually know shit apparently is no longer part of education. I asked her if she ever told math professors they must no longer give tests, assignments, or group projects? Does she tell science profs that students mustn’t be required to do lab work? I seriously cannot anymore.

🧵 A lot of people have been mystified by the sudden and incredible attacks Claudine Gay faced which led to her downfall.

As a former right-wing media entrepreneur who was part of the anti-Dan Rather blogger corps, there are a few things I think you should know.
