Old growth high on the Eagle Mt ridge, where you have a nice balance of sparsely spaced trees with a lush and varied undergrowth. It's especially striking as these days you invariably first have to cross tree farm/replanted forests of dense monoculture that tends to be dark and leave little room to create a rich undergrowth, and have a lot of debris from the felling of the original forest, making it vulnerable to fire. Invariably the replanted forest would be almost void of life, whereas the richer yet higher forest would be teeming with douglas squirrel, owls, ravens, eagles, etc. #forest#oldgrowth#ecosystem#pnw
"The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) was pressured by activists to remove an area with ancient trees that was set to be logged as part of the Poor Windy project"
“This tree sit has exposed the inexcusable malpractice of the BLM and demonstrated the power of community organizing. Direct action is the last line of defense…"
I created some new photo art this morning. 2 new pieces; 1 b/w piece here.
They're visual contrasts between devastating logging #clearcuts & world famous #OldGrowth tree, Big Lonely Doug. These creations are sparked by my lifelong love of ancient #forests & the need to keep protecting them, against government lies & #ecocide industry greed.

I was 16 yrs old, hadn't showered for over 2 weeks, been arrested/detained shortly before this concert in the woods, by - #MidnightOil - from #Australia. I'll forever remember that protest for #OldGrowth forest protections & free concert in support of the cause of saving old growth forests & support of us, activists🎵 ❤️🌲🌲❤️🌲🌲❤️🎵
War in the Woods was my very first hardcore activism work. I lived up in trees for several days. Chained myself to excavators & logging trucks.
It was the first time I did any tactical defense & offense work - all peaceful disruptive work. I created multiple soft blocks(easily removed but takes time) & hard blocks (not easily removed & needing machinery/power tools). I taught ppl how to gunk up chains with bubblegum & cementing several chain links into ground to muck up attempts at fast extractions. I taught ppl how to cut power & gas lines on trucks & heavy machinery. All to disrupt & delay industry so we could protect more old growth.
About a week after this rad concert, I was arrested & detained again, with many other activists. We were all arrested on a Friday & RCMP detainment protocols were to keep us locked up til Monday morning.
I got us released Saturday morning by driving our jailers berserk with singing Raffi - Baby Beluga & Down by the Bay & many other very annoying (when repeated over 50 times by ppl who don't sing well) kids' songs. We were released because they couldn't stop us singing badly for hrs 🤣🙌
The climate clock ticks toward midnight, yet Canada keeps chopping down its carbon-absorbing #OldGrowth forest and boosting fossil fuel production.
Many protestors see civil disobedience as the only rational response.
And the courts are listening.
Saw a 'young’ #oldgrowth (80+ yrs?) or old second growth Douglas Fir on the drive today. This logging truck appears to be holding the entire tree. The bottom of the tree is the dark log on the top left. Resolution isn’t high enough to see the rings.
I admit I have a hard time with all of it these days. Mostly because I know none of the management is anywhere near sustainable or responsible from an ecosystem perspective.
We spent over a year of our lives in bushes of #VancouverIsland#OldGrowth forests to try & save them. Many of us risked our entire lives to stand up for what's right.
I did 1st of over 100 treesits to try & protect #BritishColumbia old growth from being clearcut. 1993 was 1st time I ever got arrested.
I've been arrested over 200 times since with only 2 charges that stuck.
I am still fighting back against #BCGovernment to this day.
"The Biden administration is moving to conserve groves of #OldGrowth trees on federal land by revising management plans for #NationalForests and grasslands across the U.S. as #ClimateChange amplifies the threats they face from wildfires, insects and disease.
Older forests offer crucial wildlife habitat and other environmental benefits. The timber industry has fought against #logging restrictions on government-owned lands."
Three years after the Old Growth Strategic Review, the province has made three big recent announcements. 🪵 A Tyee explainer from Zoë Yunker. #OldGrowth#BCPoli
